We will have to pull out the big gun to get rid of that file.

If you have any questions about using Pocket Killbox, see HERE as it will guide you through the installation process as well as the removal process:

Please download Pocket Killbox version 2.0.0.175
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe
If you already have Killbox first ensure it is this version !.

Start Killbox, Use standard file kill.(default settings).
Copy this list into the windows clipboard, all the Bolded below.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfmsvcs.dll

Back in Killbox go > file > paste from clipboard, now click the red X
that looks like a stop sign, wait until a success message appears.

Note: if a file cannot be deleted [x] check delete on reboot, then go back to
standard file kill for the next file in the list.

When finished exit Killbox and restart your PC.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all browsers and windows closed(including this one), place a check beside the following and fix:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Run - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfmsvcs.dll

Please post a new HiJackThis log.

I think the big gun misfired!
I followed directions, and killbox could not delete the file, so I checked the box to delete the file on reboot. I then ran hijack this and checked the box to fix the cfmsvcs.dll file. yet it is still there after I did a hj scan. I rebooted the computer and did another hj scan which I will post below, but that virus is still there. Its one tough customer. Did I do something wrong? What is the next step?

I think I forgot to reload the big gun!

No, you did not do anything wrong. One of the best advantages of working as a team on a forum is that the experts will advise you. LDTate. Admin/Teacher here at Malware Removal Forum, advised that we need to use Killbox again, have HiJackThis fix the O20 again, and then reboot into Safe Mode and delete the file.

So we need to repeat the process and add a step:

Step 1:

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
  2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
  3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".
Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
  1. Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
  2. Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
  3. Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
  4. Click the Save button.

Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
Please disable Spyware Doctor to prevent it from interfering with the fixes that we are going to be doing. Take particular care to be certain OnGuard real-time blocking is disabled.

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may prevent the removal of some entries. You can enable it after you're clean.
To disable SpySweeper:
Open it click >Options over to the left then >Program Options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

Please disable Spyware Doctor to prevent it from interfering with the fixes that we are going to be doing. Take particular care to be certain OnGuard real-time blocking is disabled.

Step 2

Start Killbox, Use standard file kill.(default settings).
Copy this list into the windows clipboard, all the Bolded below.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfmsvcs.dll

Back in Killbox go > file > paste from clipboard, now click the red X
that looks like a stop sign, wait until a success message appears.

Note: if a file cannot be deleted [x] check delete on reboot, then go back to
standard file kill for the next file in the list.

When finished exit Killbox. Don't reboot.

Step 3:

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Control Panel - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfmsvcs.dll

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked.

Step 4:

Then Reboot to safe mode. If you don’t know how to boot in safe mode, there is a tutorial HERE .
NOTE: To avoid the risk of any of the files or folders not being found due to their having the 'Hidden' attribute, first make sure that in Folder Options > View hidden and operating system files are set to show:
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Or items 8 & 9 from this link :
http://www.russelltexas.com/malware/faqhijackthis.htm

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file and DELETE it:[/b]

Search for and delete this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cfmsvcs.dll

Please post a new HiJackThis log. This time, the file should be gone. :)

Thanks for helping, but I ran into two problems.

I followed step 1, but then on step two when I put in cfmsvcs.dll to be deleted a weird thing happened. Killbox could not delete the file, which was expected, but then all my window icons dissapeared!

I rebooted and started over. This time I followed steps, 1, 2 and 3. On step 4 in safe mode I still could not delete cfmsvcs.dll. I got the message "It is being used by another person or program."

I then rebooted to normal, of course the file is still there. (He is a tough guy!)

I've also noticed that twice a new icon has appeared on my desktop. (This happened early Sunday, before I followed your steps.) The last one was something to do with poker! Nothing like this has happened before. Is this the virus acting up?

Here is another hj log if you need it.

Let’s try another tool.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

I continue to appreciate your help, but it seems that the virus is outsmarting us. It seems that it knows we are trying to kill it.

I followed your direction and downloaded l2mix.exe, and installed it. I clicked on the l2mfix..bat and ran option 1. A log came up, but as soon as I hit the x on the top right of the l2mfix program to exit, by computer went to a blue screen which said "A problem had been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage."

I restarted the computer and tried again. I ran option 1, and when the log came up I tried to move the log out of the way so I could find another way to exit l2mfix. As soon as I tried to move the log I got the blue screen again.

The blue screen mentioned that I might not have enough memory, but I have over 6 GB left. Also, a pacific poker icon just appeared on my desktop. Is that the virus or something else? I deleted the thing again.

What now?

OK. We won't give up. We will not let the virus outsmart us!

Let's try the manual removal. We may be missing some bad file(s) that won't show up in HJT log.

Download but don't run yet: Hoster from HERE

Download but don't run yet
WinsockXPFix from HERE

Please download
Finditnt2000xp.zip from HERE

Unzip the contents of finditnt.zip to a convenient location such as Desktop.

Navigate to the Find It NT-2K-XP folder and double-click on find.bat.

A command prompt will open and it will search your computer for malicious files.
Once it has finished a Notepad window will pop up with output.txt.
Copy the entire contents of output.txt into your next post, and include another hijackthis log please.

Try not to reboot after doing this, until I get back to you.
Thanks

As I told you, I have been consulting with the experts at Malware Removal University. It looks like you have a file that we need to study to find a solution.

Nick-YF19 Site Admin asked:

First, can you navigate to the C:\Windows\system32 folder and look for a file named UpdXXX.exe? Likely Upd205, Upd208, etc

1. Using Windows Explorer, go to . Locate the first file you want to zip.

c:\windows\system32\xxxxxx.exe the Upd205.exe or what you find

2. Right click on the file and select "Send To" and "Compressed (zipped) Folder".

3. Then locate and right click on

c:\windows\system\xxxxxx.exe

4. Select "Copy".

5. Right click on the compressed folder and select "Paste". The copied files will be compressed and pasted in.

6. Right click on the zipped folder and select "Explore".

7. In "File" menu select "Add a Password". Enter the password infected and confirm the password.

8. Please email to blenderswwATspywarewarrior (Please replace the 'AT' with an '@' )

Please copy the following to the email and attach the zipped file(s) :

The password is "infected".
The thread is found here. http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... 7517#17517

Paste it in the text field and send please.

We would really appreciate your help by sending this file as instructed above. We are constantly trying to stay even with the "people" who put out these viruses.

I can't find any file that starts with upd and ends with .exe in the windows\system32 folder. The closest is "spupdsvc.exe" and "wupdmgr.exe". There is also a "updspapi.dll.ref and a "spupdsvc.exe.ref". Let me know if you want me to e-mail any of those to the address that you provided.

Just to let you know, I had to reboot the computer because I got that blue screen again, this time when I was trying to trouble shoot my video card. (I had flickering problems in a game, nothing virus related.)

After rebooting I went back to the troubleshoot page, and everything was ok, but I'm wondering if the blue screen is coming up because of the virus, or is it some other reason. I'm slightly worried here.

Anyways, I just thought that you should know, it might be virus related, and it might not be.

If you have not rebooted or shutdown/restarted, proceed as follows:

First, Disconnect from the Internet!!

(Please copy these instructions to NotePad for copy/paste use, since you will be off the Internet.)
____
Next, launch Notepad, and copy/paste all the blue REGEDIT below to it
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\User Agent\Post Platform]
"{6D877A11-8627-5B74-8914-7FEDA6C3DF90}"=""

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Shell Extensions]

Back on the Desktop, double-click on the fixme.reg file you just saved and click on Yes when asked to merge the information.
____
Now, extract KillBox (downloaded earlier) from the zip file and double-click on KillBox.exe to run it.

In the main screen of Pocket KillBox, go to Tools in the top menu bar, and select: Delete Temp Files.

Back at the main screen of KillBox, select the option: Delete on Reboot

In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ajtodisc.dll

Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
When asked if you would like to Reboot, select No.

Do the same as above for each of the files that follow, and select No when asked to reboot!

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bgtmeter.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cfmsvcs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dosapi.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\glkrsrc.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kxdlv.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pcxthk16.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\szs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wgnmp32.dll
C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\rzched20.dll
C:\RECYCLER\desktop.ini

Finally, in the Full Path of File to Delete, copy and paste the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\guard.tmp

Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
When asked to Reboot, select Yes!!
____
Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL =
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Shell Extensions - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rzched20.dll

Reboot the computer.

____
Since this intruder may alter the Hosts file, download the Hoster to restore the file:
http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip
Select: Restore Original Hosts
Click OK and exit Hoster.
____
Next, download AdAware SE from the following link:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Also, check the Recycle Bin to see if it works properly. A side effect of VX2 is to sometimes damage the Recycle Bin operation.
Create an blank Notepad file on the Desktop: right click the Desktop, select New>Text Document
Right click the text document and delete it.
When a file is deleted, it should ask if you want to send it to Recycle Bin.
Does it ask if you want to send the file to the Recycle Bin, or, does the file just get deleted?
Post back what it does.

When done with all of the above, close all windows and browsers, run HijackThis, Scan, post a new HijackThis log, and a new Find_It log.

If you encounter any problems with the steps above, please describe them.

Many thanks to LDTate for the above fix. :)

Yes. Try this procedure. If you reboot when you are using Killbox, sometimes you have to repeat the Killbox procedure. So follow the directions exactly.

I followed all the steps without a problem. When I deleted the text document, I was asked if I wanted to send it to the recycle bin.
