Suspect Trojan Horse infection

Unread postby Eazy » April 7th, 2007, 9:41 pm

Over the past few days I've been getting a bunch of annoying popus from WinAntiVirus Pro and DriveCleaner. I'm running Norton Internet Security and at times it's been blocking Trojan.Metajuan, Trojan Horse, WinFixer and InfoStealer, but when I do a scan it finds nothing.

I've run Adaware, Spybot S&D, a-squared and AVG Anti-spyware scans and have also run the Trend-Micro online scan but all to no avail.

Hijack this log is below:

Hi Eazy and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!

Hi Eazy

Can you throw any light on these for me, Is this your Ip address or the company you work for?

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

I believe we have some files hiding from us, I'm going to flush them out.

Please go to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis folder. Right click on the HijackThis.exe file and select "Rename". Rename it removal.exe,

Then run HijackThis again and post a new log please.

Thanks dan

Thanks for your help Dan.
The IP addresses are DNS server addresses I've manually added to my TCP/IP settings.

Uninstall List: (HijackThis kept crashing when I tried to save this list until I renamed it to removal.exe, then it worked OK).

Hi Eazy

Your log shows you are using" Azureus"
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation.
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer Networks is here : http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/
You can also catch a list of tested P2P programs here:
http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/

While were working your log please refrain from using your p2p program

I've uninstalled eMule and removed the mirc install file as I never use either of them anyway.

Hi Eazy

Few items to tidy up.

Since you uninstalled "e-mule" Invariable it leaves a folder behind so can you navigate to program files and delete the folder "e-mule", as detailed below.

Right click start, In the drop down menu click "Explore" Then navigate to each file\ folder in the left hand pane, which will reveal its content in the right hand pane, highlight file or folder right click and Delete, if present:
C:\Program Files\emule <======This folder
D:\Net Download\Programs\backups\backup-20070407-001935-664.dll <=========This file
D:\Net Download\Programs\backups\backup-20070407-001935-664.dll <=========This file
D:\Net Download\Programs\backups\backup-20070407-002021-238.dll <=========This file
D:\Net Download\Programs\backups\backup-20070407-113845-797.dll <=========This file
D:\Net Download\Programs\backups\backup-20070407-113914-119.dll <=========This file

Well done!

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
    You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.
  • Re hide your system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
    1. Double-click My Computer.
    2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. Put a check by
      Hide file extensions for known file types.
    5. Under the
      Hidden files
      folder, select
      Do not show hidden files and folders.
    6. Check
      Hide protected operating system files.
    7. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

    Check the Security Center in Control Panel and verify that your Firewall is turned ON.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
    This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
    Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
Image
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is ................ please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

I've now done all of the above. Everything looks to be OK now, haven't had any popups or security warnings since Monday. Thanks again for your help removing this, getting one of these infections is like having someone break into your house and trash it, it's a relief to know there are people like you out there to point us in the right direction to clean things up again.

snthorne,

These fixes are specific for the users machine only. It's bad practice to believe you have the same problems your machine can be so different operating system , file system, programs, different a\v's that are in use. your lucky you never borked your system, as many do.

One other point always start your own thread and not join in on another users thread.

Just some good advice regards dan

Good advice

Unread postby snthorne » April 12th, 2007, 1:38 pm

You are right.
I stand corrected.
Perhaps my hesitation to participate directly stems from my experience that computer experts tend to admonish and condescend.
Next time I will bare my computer inadequacy and risk my own thread!
Thanks again.
