Malware or Worm has disabled Windows Firewall

Please Help!! Either malware or a worm has disabled my Windows Firewall! I had previously used Outpost Firewall & disabled Windows Firewall. After no longer receiving updates from Outpost- I have decided to switch back. Firewall will not start- it gives me a "For security- some settings are controlled by group policy", also the options are dimmed preventing me from checking the proper box. I have figured out that something is changing my registry setting HKEY_LOCAL_MCHINE\Software\Microsoft\Security Center--the FirewallOverride value keeps changing no matter how many times I change it back. Also I have something trying to hijack my browser everytime I get online. AdAware, Spybot, ewido, AntiVir, Trojan Hunter & Trend Micro scans have failed to find the problem.

With the amount of good security programs I would have been supprized if much had got trough.

You will probably need to disable teatimer in spybot in order to fix those lines, it is often that which 'stops' the complete removal.

So disable teatimer - or exit by right clicking the running icon and exit.

Then in HJT check those lines and 'fix checked'.

Reboot and check that those lines have indeed gone.

I think your problem with your firewall is probably a settings one rather than malware stopping it.

I would not advise the winXP firewall anyway, follow the link below in my signature to the article 'computer safety online' and install one of those firewalls instead. Any one of them will give better protection for you than the winXP firewall will.

If you wish to trouble shot your problem wit that firewall may I suggest the forums at PCPitstop or castlecops might be the best place to go.
