Unread postby thedayve » April 27th, 2007, 7:02 pm

Hi guys, I seem to have a problem with a worm that just won't go away. Been trying solutions all night and I've come up with nothing. Whatever I do my anti-virus shield keeps detecting and quaranteening the same worm files.

Good morning thedayve.

I'm looking through your log and will post back shortly. In the meantime, please let me know the answers to the following questions.

...my anti-virus shield keeps detecting and quaranteening the same worm files

Is this NOD32? What files is it detecting?

Initially I was running AVG Free and after initially discovering the problem I found a site that suggested NOD32 as a solution. Both programs detected the same files on numerous occasions

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\SharedDocs.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Data Emma.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Videos\My Videos.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\ My Music.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Documents.exe

There are more than just those 5, all in All Users\Documents\, all ".exe" files often with the same name as a the sub-directory i.e. Documents.exe

NOD32 classed these as Win32/Brontok.AT Worm, AVG called it I-Worm/VB.IR.

Thanks in advance...

Hi - thanks for the quick response.

Please download Brontok Worm Removal Tool (by sUBs)
  • Double-click CleanX-II.exe then follow the prompts.
  • Reboot and post the log that it creates.
Please also post a new HijackThis log.

Hi.

I should also point out that whilst Cleanx was doing it's thing my NOD32 antivirus detected the worm files but this time offered me the option of deleting them whereas previously it had only offered me the option of quarantine.

I'm not sure what happened there. The report should have shown the bad files. It looks as if the tool removed some parts of the infection, which allowed NOD32 to delete the files. When the tool looked for the files, they weren't there! However, let's not take anything for granted.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please reboot the computer and open HijackThis.
  • Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button
  • In the Startup List section:
    • Tick List also minor sections (full)
    • Tick List empty sections (complete)
  • Click the Generate Startup List log button
  • Click Yes
  • Copy/paste the contents of the log, as a reply to this post
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please could you check that the 'worm files' have gone. It would be a good idea to run NOD32 on those folders. Please let me know the results.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

You appear to have run a Kaspersky online scan since your previous log. If you still have it, please post the report and let me know at what stage it was run (before or after running the removal tool).

ATF Cleaner by Atribune ©

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

---------------------------------------------------

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot in Normal Mode.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post, as a reply to this thread (you may need more than one post):
  • The HijackThis Startup List
  • The results of your check on the 'worm files'
  • The Kaspersky report (if you have it)
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log

NOD32 scanning log of \All Users\Documents

NOD32 version 2047 (20070208) NT
Command line: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
Checking CRC of NOD32.EXE: Status OK
Scanning memory: Not performed (option disabled)
Error occurred while scanning MBR sector of the 2. physical disk. Error reading sector.
Date: 28.4.2007 Time: 19:42:25
Anti-Stealth technology is enabled.
Scanned disks, folders and files: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\
Number of scanned files: 84
Number of threats found: 0
Time of completion: 19:42:25 Total scanning time: 0 sec (00:00:00)

-----------------------------------------

Manually looking at the directory I haven't been able to find the files since the cleanX thing.

-----------------------------------------

I was running the Kaspersky report when you first replied with instructions on how to proceed and I figured the scan would only reveal the same sort of things as before so I stopped the scan half way and continued with the tests etc. you suggested.

Good news! :D

The scans are all clear, so it looks as if we've got rid of the worm. No problem with the Kaspersky report - I just thought that it would be worth looking at it if you had one. However, I think that it would be worth running one just to make sure that we've got everything. You shouldn't have to download the ActiveX components this time.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click the Accept button
  • Follow the prompts to download and install the ActiveX component(s) and other software
    • If a yellow information bar appears at the top of the browser window, click on it and select Install ActiveX Control
    • If a message box appears, click on OK or Run as appropriate
  • Click Accept again (see the note below if using IE7)
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as... button:
  • Save the report to your desktop (Save as type: Text document (txt))
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Please post the Kaspersky report as a reply to this thread.

Oh dear... things aren't right.

I was planning on waiting till tonight to leave my computer running the Kaspersky scan all night. But then this afternoon on three seperate occasions NOD32 AMON protection alerted me to the worm creating executables and then NOD32 quarantining them (Note: did not give me the option to delete them). At all times I was simply using my computer as normal, had microsoft word open, accessed facebook and wikipedia a number of times but nothing out of the ordinary.

I ran another CleanX scan and it came back with the same results as last time i.e. blank.

I have put off a Kaspersky scan for now as even if it comes back clean I am sure there is something else not quite right. Do you want the logfiles of NOD32 for today?

Just read this article:

http://antivirus.about.com/od/virusdesc ... tokbro.htm

Do you reckon that's worth a go?

Good morning.

Neither your HijackThis log or the AVG Anti-Spyware scan show signs of the Brontok infection. The HijackThis Startup list showed that the usual load points are not present in the registry. So, either the worm is being completely hidden or you are not infected, but are just getting the infected files. This would explainn why the removal tool keeps coming up blank. Someone with a very similar set of symptoms ending up solving the problem as follows:
i think i may have figured out the problem. i am in unversity halls, and rather stupidly i have left my shared folder open to be modified by other users. as the files only seemed to appear there, im guessing someone else on the network has the virus, and it copied its self into my shared folder. i have now changed the folder setting so it is not able to be modified by anyone else on the network.

I note that you have a line in the HijackThis log for the University of Exeter. Are you linked to their network? Do others have access to your shared folders?

----------------------------------------------------------------

I would like you to run an in-depth scan on the computer.

Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply.
Note: Apart from producing the reports, the scanner will also:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • run HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Please let me know the position regarding the University network and post the following:
  • The Deckard reports (main.txt and extra.txt)
  • A new HijackThis log

My computer is indeed permanently connected to the Exeter University network and a couple of other people in my halls have had problems with threats being detected that are similar to mine. There is also someone who's symptoms i.e. task manager refusing to work seem to suggest that they have the Brontok worm. However, people do NOT have access to my shared files. On iTunes people can view and play other people's libraries so obviously a degree of sharing goes on but there is no way of viewing someone else's files over the network. We do a lot of sharing via USB sticks for printing and sharing music, could this be a factor? Should I follow the instructions in the quote you posted or not then?

Hi.

There is nothing bad showing in the Deckard scan, but your NOD32 needs updating (it is essential that this is kept up to date). This worm can spread through the use of USB sticks. Make sure that you scan the drive with NOD32 immediately it is inserted in the computer - before it is opened. However, I think that you are getting these files created through the network connection. You say that there is a person whose computer is showing signs of the worm infection. Is it possible to get this computer disconnected from the network until it has been cleaned? If it is left connected, it could spread throughout the network.

On iTunes people can view and play other people's libraries so obviously a degree of sharing goes on

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Do other people have access to the music library on your computer?

Please could you check the settings on your Shared Documents folder. Click on Start then My Computer. Right-click on the Shared Documents folder and select Properties. Click on the Sharing tab. Make sure that the following boxes are not ticked:
  • Share this folder on the network
  • Allow network users to change my files
Please let me know whether, or not, they were ticked.

I have checked the sharing and security settings of my computer and only to discover that it was not only my shared folder but also my C:/ and D:/ (partition) were also shared to "other users on the network". I believe this is a remnant of when this was my Dad's laptop and he had it configured to be connected and shared within our home network. I have disabled sharing on the C, D and Shared Folders.

I scanned the USB drive and it came up clean.

What would be the best way to clean my friend's computer (obviously firstly to physically disconnect it). Use the CleanX program?

(thanks a lot for all this, hope im not a hassle but the problem does seem to be less than straightforward...)
