Unread postby bof:) » April 17th, 2007, 10:10 am

Hi, I'd be very grateful if someone could check my HJT log for me.

Whilst on Ebay, I clicked on favourite seller and got a page with just 1 line on it saying Apache something.

I then had an analogue clock face appearing in the bottom left hand corner of my taskbar when webpages where opened.

Scanning with Ad aware (free); SuperAntispyware;nothing was found.

Housecall found, 'Spyware_keyl_Bosseverywhere' , which it deleted.

A-squared found:

TRACE_REGISTERY_811 Toolbar in

HKEY_local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\searchscopes -->default scope

and

Riskware.client-IRC.win32.mIRC.62

IN C:\program files\mIRC.62

These are currently in the A-Squared quarentine bin.

Thankyou,

Mike

Hi bof and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!

Hi bof
Not seeing a lot in your log ,let's try some scans.

Essentially the reason mirc is flagged is because it is somewhat of a risk-ware...its a chat system that can be exploited to transfer viruses...but people who use it wisely and correctly can have no problem with it.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
Do not use yet!

Ewido is now known as ( AVG Anti-Spyware.)

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Do you have admin rights to this pc?

Try the kaspersky scan in Internet exploper.
Firefox doesn't support active x
Thanks dan :)

Hi dan12, yes I have admin rights on this laptop. My user profile says, Computer administrator.

I was using IE7 when trying to get Kaspersky to run.

I have a vague memory that I've been able to use it before but have not been able to use it for sometime. I cannot get Pandascan to run either.

But I can use Housecall.

I hope this helps

In Internet explorer again:
Let's check a few settings and try to get that scan running

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click on Default Level and click Ok
  • Click on the Custom Level button.

Allow previously unused activeX ...> Disabled
Allow scriptlets >>> Disabled
Download unsigned Active X controls >> disabled
Run activeX controls marked for scripting >> Prompt

KAV ActiveX is signed, no need to change the settings related to unsigned ActiveX controls.

Note:Don't forget to make a note of the standard settings, and ensure the you resets after the scan.

Hi dan12, all IE setting where the same as you asked for except one which I moved from enable to prompt.... the last setting on your list.

I also turned off the Block ActiveX/ Java scripts/ VB scripts setting of my fire wall.

Initially kaspersky would still not work so I went onto the single file scannner page, which downloaded an ActiveX update (?). Going back to the full kaspersky scan, it also downloaded an ActiveX thingie and then the program ran.

The log is below, many thanks again.

Hi bof

Scan was fine nothing to worry about.

Please make sure you return your settings back as before the kaspersky scan scan!
That applies to the setting you set within your fire wall.

As I mentioned don't be too concerned with mIRC,

Hi dan, I've downloaded java and adobe updates you provided, thankyou.

Deleted all java in add/remove (could only find two updates, J2SEruntime environment 5.0 updates 10 and 11).

rebooted pc and installed both updates.

ps, I asked my son about mIRC and he uses it with file transfers (dcc) turned off. So, I'll leave it on my laptop.

Hi bof:)

Well done!

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

It's also a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware:

  • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close the Help and Support Center box.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

  • Re hide your system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
    1. Double-click My Computer.
    2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
    5. Under the
      Hidden files
      folder, select
Do not show hidden files and folders.
    6. Check
      Hide protected operating system files.
    7. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is ................ please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

hi dan, thankyou for your help, I'll work my way down your 'now you are clean list' this afternoon.

Laptop is running fine now one question though, have you any idea why my user account does not appear when I go into safe-mode, even though I'm listed as Computer Administrator on my User profile ? My sons does appear along with the usual admin user when in safe-mode.

I ask this because AVG,Spybot s&d, adaware etc are all showing on my windows desktop in normal mode but not in safe-mode.
