I tunes

Unread postby kramer87 » April 4th, 2007, 8:21 pm

This just recently happened... I tried to open iTunes and the windows error came up which read: "iTunes has encountered a problem and has to close", the usual error which lets you send or not send reports. Also, I ran checks with a few virus/adware programs and nothing came up. I also tired removing itunes and reinstalling it from the website, but it still doesnt work...i think its a virus but my virus scans tell me nothings on the computer.

-Andrew

P.S.- Quicktime is also not working.

Hi kramer87 and welcome to Malware Removal,

This may not be virus/malware related but let's try a few things.
===================
STEP 1.
This will provide a hijackthis log and other information.

Deckard’s System Scanner

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your nextreply

=============
Step 2.
This will help determine if a virus is present.
Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information from Kapersky in your next post.

**Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.
==================
STEP 3.
I want to see all the files with quicktime in the name so please do this.
FileFind

Please download FileFind from Atribune.
Unzip the file and save it to your desktop.

To run FileFind, please do the following:

  • Click on FileFind.exe
  • In the box labeled "Enter the directory to search"
  • Enter Drive eg.. C:\
  • In the box labeled "Enter the file to search"
  • Enter the file
    *quicktime*.*
  • Now click on the "Find" button
  • Once the utility has found the files click on "Export"
  • This will save a text file to your C:\ drive as /Export.txt

Double click on Export.txt, copy and paste, this information in your next post.

So I need the information from Deckard's System Scanner
The results of the Kapersky log
the listing of files with quicktime in name (the Export.txt)

You have some quarantined files and infected _restore files but I do not think that is the problem. This is old but you might try this.

http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-sof ... rking.html

it seems that the problem may be that the iTunes installer does not properly install Quicktime. You may need to un-install all traces of Quicktime and then install the stand alone version of Quicktime Player. If that does not do it you may need to uninstall and remove all traces of iTunes and Quicktime and then do a clean install of the iTunes package with any antivirus apps disabled. This information was found at:

http://discussions.apple.com/message...sageID=1685760

You can download the stand alone Quicktime Player installer at:

Hi kramer87! Glad you got it fixed!

Let's finish cleaning up your log please.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IpWins] C:\Program Files\ipwins\ipwins.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://kl.bar.need2find.com/KL/menusearch.html?p=KL
O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
C:\Program Files\ipwins\<=file
Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post (reply) with a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hi kramer87,

Glad you were able to fix your I-tune problems.

Your logs appear to be clean. Reseting and Re-enabling your System Restore will clear those infected _restore files found by Kapersky.

Reset hidden/system files and folders
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

System Restore for Windows XP
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    Turn off System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. Check Turn off System Restore.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  2. Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  3. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  4. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  5. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  6. More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.
