The one you will use, will keep updated and like the interface of.

Most AV's are now kept at a similar technicolical level that thier is not much to choose between them.

The main considerations, apart from my first sentance, is size of running files - the amount or RAM and system resources they use.

Don't use one of those suites like McAfee/Norton. Just get a good antivirus program like AVG, Avira or Avast! and download a free Firewall like Kerio or Comodo.

of interest, what free antivirus program were you thinking OF using?

and to probably state the obvious, you do need other protection programs to augment it, such as spybot, adaware , asquared for a few suggestions ;)

I would use AVIRA AntiVir if i needed the real time protection and ClamAV as an on-demand scan.
