Hi and welcome to Malware Removal.

Your log looks clean. There are malware reasons for the computer to freeze but that can also be a sign of hardware problems. Before I send you to a forum that has the more experience with hardware problems let us do some deeper scans that will show us more.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Next, download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
  • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
  • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
  • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
  • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
  • Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

** NOTEBefore performing a scan it is recommended to do the following.
1. Physically unplug the cable from the PC to the internet connection.
2. Close down All Scheduling/Updating + Running Background tasks etc.
3. Launch and run the program.
4. While it is scanning DO NOT use your computer at ALL until the scan has been completed.
5. Save your Log File, and then Enable those things you closed down, or Reboot, and ONLY then Reconnect to the Internet.

Post the logs from Silent Runner and RootKit Revealer in this thread.

Hi Chi Man

I did not find anything of importance in your logs.

There are a few things to clean up but those are not what is responsible for your problems.

Let us clean up those loose ends:

Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only" or "Scan". Put a check mark by the items that are listed below.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Close all open windows except HijackThis and then click the "Fix checked" button.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
-------------------------------------------

To come back to your problems I can think of at least three different hardware reasons why your computer is behaving the way it is. However I am not an expert on hardware problems and would therefore advice you to go to PC Pitstop http://pcpitstop.com or to CastleCops http://www.castlecops.com. Both have forums for hardware problems. You can mention that I ran tests for malware but they came out negative. Please do nly post at one of the two. We are short experts and everytime somebody double posts it means that there is a risk that two experts are working on the same problem while somebody else does not get the help they need.

Now I want you to take some precautions to avoid being re-infected

  1. Clean out Temporary Files etc. Download System Security Suite from http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip. Extract it from the zip file into a folder and double click on sss.exe. Check the boxes under the 'Items to Clear' tab and click 'Clear Selected Items'. Reboot when prompted. It is a good idea to do this every few weeks as a lot of junk collects there over time.

  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
    Also see the following:
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer 6, but you don't have to use it.
Try a different browser like Firefox.
It is also worth trying Thunderbird for controlling spam in your e-mail.
InternetExplorer7 is also a good alternative and can be downloaded from Microsoft.

  3. Always use a anti-virus program and KEEP IT UPDATED
It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

  4. Always use a firewall.
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen to often with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Be restrictive with granting access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not, make the block permanent.

  5. Never run two Antivirus programs or two Firewalls at the same time. They can interfere with each other and cause problems.

  6. MOST IMPORTANT : You Need to keep “Windows” and "Internet Explorer” updated. Open ‘Internet Explorer” and go to”Start”> "Tools" menu > "Windows Update" or go to Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates to get the critical updates.

  7. If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof you must keep it updated as well. Go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed. Update MS Office here.

  8. You will find more about how to protect yourself as well as suggested programs for this purpose at HERE and at "So how did I get infected in the first place? for some good advice..

PLEASE READ IT AND FOLLOW THE RECOMMENDATIONS TO PROTECT YOURSELF.

  9. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the the protection programs regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I am glad if I have been able to help you.
