so this little guy was on my computer this morning when i woke up. i dunno if youve seen it b4 but theres a warning at the bottom of the screen and it tells you that youve been infected and windows is installing the most up to date programs to fix the problem. and i had a new icon on my desktop that wasnt there before. im not very computer savy but this just seemed very odd to me that windows would install something without asking me. so first things first i used norton uninstall to remove the program (so i thought). but then i still had that damn warning popping up every 5 minutes. so i spent the rest of the day downloading and running the latest versions of my computer protection. AVG, norton systemworks and ad aware se personal. so i finally got rid of that pop up warning, but i decided to search for spy sheriff on download.com to find out what was. ok im rambling ill speed this up. i couldnt find it on download.com so i started searching for it elsewere and found out it was the virus! (boy am i stupid, or maybe just slow) so somone on myspace directed me to this fine site. whew! ok thanks for listening to me ramble. i just wanted you to know what ive already done. and how do i find out if its gone completely or what else i need to do. thanks much.

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe.

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again. Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
• Click on Edit>Select All; then click on Edit>Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I do not see the usual spysheriff/smitfraud components in your HJT log, the security programs you ran may have gotten rid of it? Spysheriff information can be found here:

Let's check a smitfraudfix log to see what it finds along with an uninstall list...then go from there:

1. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.


Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2. Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

OK...the Smitfraud log is clean....you do have a lot of adware and potential spyware programs on your computer which we will remove below. These include iWon, Viewpoint, Paltalk and Weatherbug. If you have any questions about removing any of these programs, let me know before corrying out the instructinos below. I also want to know if you want to keep the MyWebSearch components installed on your computer...most reputable malware sites list these as optional for removal, in that they are not necessarily 'bad' but are often installed without your acknowledgement. In your case I would wager that it was installed with the 'SmileyCentral' program.

Your Java version is also out of date which is a security issue, and we'll fix that below too.


Let's do this:

1. First download AVG anti-spyware (previously Ewido) from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

• Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
• Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
• On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
  • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
• Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Save it to your desktop, we will use it later.

3. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

4. Reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

5. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present). Click start>>control panel>>add/remove programs:

6. Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

• Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
• Navigate to the listed folders, then right-click to select them and click delete

7. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser

Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

8. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

• Lauch AVG-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
• ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  Once the scan is complete do the following:
• If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
• Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
• Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
• Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

9. Update Java and Remove old Java Versions

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.<== scroll down the list to find THIS entry
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

Remove older Java Versions:

• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start >> Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Install latest Java Version:

• From your desktop, double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

10. Post the results of the AVG report scan along with a new HJT log for me to review.

would you recommend that i remove all of those? i think my dad put the weather bug thing on there and i put the paltalk on there, but i dont use it anymore. i d/l it bc my aim took a crap on me. probably bc of the spysheriff bc aim works fine. so i dont really need paltalk anymore. are any of those programs bad for my computer?

This one is a toss-up, with some coming down on the side of it being 'adware' (unless it is the paid version) and some saying it's OK.

I recommend removing it, but the choice is obviously yours....there are other adware-free versions of weather programs that are quite good. The one I use is Weather Pulse

None of these programs are what would probably be considered 'serious' security risks, but they can be troublesome in and of themselves and for the other stuff some of them invite along.

Let me know which of these programs, if any, you want to keep and then I'll re-do the above 'fix' to leave them on your system...but my recommendation would be for you to remove them all.
