We seem to have some spyware that our current software is not identifying and removing to include about:blank and speed.pointroll.com? I've pasted our HijackThis log below. If you could help me out I would be eternally grateful!! Thanks.

Hi and welcome to MWR.

I do not see anything that points to an infection in your log. However there are some programs that need to be updated because the versions that you are running have security holes that put your computer at risk.
The ones I have noticed are Adobe which should be version 8 and Java which should be either 5.10 or 6.0.
We will come back to them once we are sure that there is nothing lurking in your computer.

For now can you please tell me what makes you so sure that there are some infections present. Give me as much detail as you can.

Thank you for your help. The reason we think there is something lurking in the background, is that when we try to access web-sites, even some that we access a lot like the wall street journal on-line, we get a dialogue box that asks if we want "to add this site to our trusted sites" and it says it's from "about:blank." It is quite frustrating and also occurs when I'm trying to access and read my yahoo email. Do you need more details or is this sufficient? Thank you again for your time and your assistance!

That was not much to go on but lets try and see if we can find out waht is going on. Before that however I would like you to update JAVA as the older versions can be dangerous security holes.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
-------------------------------------------

Now to the job of finding out what is going on:

First of all, read through the whole post. Be sure that you understand the instructions. If you have any questions please ask them before you start doing the fixes. You may want to print out this post so that you have a hard copy of these instructions. You can also copy the content of the post and paste it into Notepad. If you can not find Notepad let me know.

Sorry it took me so long to complete all this -- life! I've posted the logs you requested below. However, I did mess up & on the AVG log I accidentally clicked "APPLY ALL ACTIONS" with the "DELETE" option instead of the "QUARANTINE" option. Is this a crisis?? THank you again for your help!

Hi
I am working on your logs. Found one file that I can not find out anything about. I therefore want you to submit it for analysis.

Go to http://virusscan.jotti.org
Put this line into the white textbox:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSBTattM.exe

Click Submit.

Please post the results of this scan to this thread.

Regarding your problem with AVG that was not a big deal. The reason we use quarantine is so that if the program does a mistake (which does happen even if ti is not often) we can then reclaim it from the quarantine and thereby in a simple way repair the damage.
In your case the AVG was clean and all it removed was som cookies that are keeping tab on what you do on the net. Not in any way a serious threat. Kaspersky also came up clean. I am working on the startup log and that is more time consuming.
It is getting late here and I am on my way to bed. Will be back with the next set of instructions tomorrow morning here.

This is what it said. "The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"
Is there something else I should do? Thanks! Take care.

Let us forget about that one file for a moment. I am seeing some comments about the same behaviour at different forums and they all involve Internet Explorer 7. It seems that if you added "About Blank:" to your trusted zone you get the effect that you described. Do you know if that is the case on your computer?

That was it!! I can't believe it never dawned on me to check that! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You made my day! Now, did you see anything else on this computer we should "clean up?"

Hi again.

Before I let you go I want to be as sure as I an be that there is nothing else hidden in that computer. A year ago I would have said that you are clean. However now I want to do a few more scans.

Please RIGHT-CLICK HERE to download Silent Runner's.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will receive a prompt:
Do you want to skip supplementary searches?
      click NO
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done, let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt All Done!, open the text file on the desktop, copy that entire log, and paste it here.
*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Next, download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
  • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
  • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
  • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
  • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
  • Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

** NOTEBefore performing a scan it is recommended to do the following.
1. Physically unplug the cable from the PC to the internet connection.
2. Close down All Scheduling/Updating + Running Background tasks etc.
3. Launch and run the program.
4. While it is scanning DO NOT use your computer at ALL until the scan has been completed.
5. Save your Log File, and then Enable those things you closed down, or Reboot, and ONLY then Reconnect to the Internet.

Post the logs from Silent Runner and RootKit Revealer in this thread.
