Hi touranagram

The files in C:\Avenger should not be a problem.

You can delete the following Files/Tools we created/downloaded as they are not needed any more.

FixServices.bat
Killbox
C:\!Killbox <-- Folder
jre-6-windows-i586.exe
Fix.bat
Fixgrom.zip
cleanme.zip
cleanme.bat
Avenger

As a final precaution, can you do the following scan please...

Do a scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Post the Kaspersky report, along with a new HijackThis log.
Let me know how things are.

Lets try this for Avenger:

Start > Run > type cmd.exe and hit enter

type each of the following lines followed by Enter

cd c:\Avenger
del backup.zip

Let me know if that does or does not work.

For Kaspersky:
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

Kaspersky completed, thanks for the tip. Whilst this ran Mcafee detected a Trojan and cleared it within c:\system volume information\_....(did not get all the info in the message).

Was able to delete the backup.zip file. Is there any more we can do for me should I be concerned about the avenger file?

Hi touranagram!

The Kaspersky log came back clean, which is good news! Avenger is nothing to be concerned about now.

Just one entry I would remove from HijackThis...

Open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button
- Check the following entries (below)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway

- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
- Click Fix Checked
Close HiajckThis

Let me know how things are and if we can mark this resolved?

Here are some tips for a clean and secure computer.

For XP users.
It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware. You can clean this by doing the following:
  • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close the Help and Support Center box.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
  1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  2. Click on the Security tab
  3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  4. Click on Default Level and click OK
  5. Click on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • Internet Explorer 7 users: Check all other items and make sure that they meet the (recommended) setting when applies.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the
    settings, press the Yes button.
  6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=53#53

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.

all completed. I have completed the recomdations with ie7 should I look at using firefox? (I downloaded it yesterday an its pretty much the same as ie now) I have read thats less open to issues..

Will continue with McAfee, spybot and adaware plus add your other recomedations. I am just in the process of running a completed scan with mcafee but I am pretty happy that this is all closed, shall I remove or leave the AVG anti spyware software is my last question?

Thank you for your help and presistance in resolving this problem. I have no idea how I would have resolved it otherwise and I will be more careful what I do in future.

mmm started getting notices from Macfee that malware is still affecting files within my local directory temp file and cannot delete the files. A restart seems to have stopped it now buts its a bit strange as all other indications are that we are clear and a full scan did not pick them up...

Its your choice whether you use Firefox or IE7. Firefox was the secure browser before IE7, but IE7 should now be as secure. I would keep AVG anti-spyware as it is an excellent scanner.

Did McAfee give a name as to what it was? Use ATF Cleaner (if you still have it), which you downloaded earlier to clean out your Temp directories/files. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
