Register to Remove

Unread postby John B. » January 5th, 2007, 7:02 am

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
I am currently looking over your log. As I am a trainee, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

    Image

    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Greets, John.

Hi,

Eindelijk een taalgenoot hier op het forum ;)

Sorry that it took so long but no teacher was able to check this fix until this morning...

Please copy this fix to notepad or word, or print it, because you won't always be able to access the internet!

Step 1: Disable Windows Defender
Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Close Windows Defender
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

Step 2: Stop process with Task Manager
Press Control+Alt+Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following process (if present):

isc_ui.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Step 3: Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Personal Security Center Monitor] C:\WINDOWS\system32\isc_ui.exe

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 4: Download AVG Anti-Spyware
Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Step 5: Download and Run AFT Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Hi John
It took some time to implement all your instructions.
Some remarks though.
- I didn't find isc_ui.exe in task manager in step 3;
- I was not able to run firefox (it seems not to be automatically installed)
in step 5
- I didn't find isc_ui.exe in step 8 neither (there was isc_cpl.cpl, which I left untouched)
- AVG in secure mode didn't find anything neither. So there is no log.

For the moment however, it seems that Ultimate Defender is vanished. I hope it will remain so. Unless you tell me that the problem is not solved yet, I'm very very happy (for the moment) and I thank you so much for your help.

Let me know if you can tell me that I'm totally "clean".

I hope that I will not have to bother you again!!

Patrick
Ps.
- I'm installing the new Java version now.
- Hereunder you'll find the hijack-log. I did fix the two checked files.

Hi,

The log is still the same but that doesn't have to mean anything. Please go on with my instructions.

Step 1: Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Personal Security Center Monitor] C:\WINDOWS\system32\isc_ui.exe

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 2: Upload a File to Jotti
Please visit http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Click on Browse... and navigate to the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\hqdkhwxi.exe
Click Open
Please let me know the results. Also give me a new HijackThis log.

Greets, John.

Hi John

Thank you for being thorough. You're right. We better be 100% sure.

- I did run Hijackthis and did not find these two files anymore;
- I did check the mentioned file at Jotti.
Result: There was only BITDEFENDER that mentioned finding a Trojan
"trojan.obfus.gen". The other programmes found nothing.
General status message was:
"POSSIBLY INFECTED MALWARE" with a note however: this file was
only classified as malware by scanners known to generate more false
positives than the average scanner. Do not consider these results as
definately accurate. Also because of this, results of the scan will not be
recorded in the database.

So I understand they doubt the analysis.

What do I do next?

Warm regards

Patrick

Hi,

We would like to have a copy of that file and see if it's new in the world of malware.

Step 1: Stop some process with Task Manager
Press Control+Alt+Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following process (if present):

hqdkhwxi.exe

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Step 2: Send the file
1. Using Windows Explorer locate the file you want to zip.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hqdkhwxi.exe

2. Right click on the file and select "Send To" and "Compressed (zipped) Folder".

3. Right click on the zipped folder and select "Explore".

4. In "File" menu select "Add a Password". Enter the password infected and confirm the password.

5. I've send you a PM with the emailadress you should send it to.

6. Please copy the following to the email and attach the zipped file(s) :

The password is "infected".
The thread is found here. http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... 091#145091

Paste it in the text field.

7. Send the mail.

Step 3: Rename and move the file
Please rename hqdkhwxi.exe to hqdkhwxi.bak and move it to C:\test which you need to create first.

Step 4: Remove bad HijackThis entry
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside the item listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hqdkhwxi.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hqdkhwxi.exe
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 5: Reboot

Step 6: Post a new HijackThis log
Also tell me if anything strange is happening after the reboot.

Greets, John.

Hi John
I did perform steps 1 to 6, except step 2 as i mailed you.
Is there another way to deliver the zip-file?

I didn't notice anything strange when rebooting.
You find Hijacklog hereunder.

Thanks again.

Greets

Hi,

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :

Please delete C:\test and enable Windows Defender.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.
  • Re hide your system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
    • Double-click My Computer.
    • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    • Click the View tab.
    • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
    • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Do not show hidden files and folders."
    • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
I recommend AVG Anti-Virus (Free Edition)!
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
    I recommend ZoneAlarm (Free Edition)!
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

>> Here << you can see how you can help us.

May your God go with you..

John.
