Need help assisting my client. I have exhausted all avenues and nothing is working. PLEASE!! I have run Hijackthis after renaming it. Here is the log. Norton AV keeps detecting the Trojan.Vundo virus but after quaretining or deleting after a reboot it just comes back under a different name. She did get roped into installing Winantiviruspro2006 as well which has been uninstalled and cleaned to the best of my ability but IE keeps delivering pop ups and redirecting to their website. Thanks for you help.

Hi aquamanlou,

Welcome to the MalWare Removal forums! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  2. Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  3. Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly

Hi aquamanlou,

Your client's computer does have an infection. If you have any questions just ask. First I will need you to please do the following:

I see you are running HiJackThis from here C:\temp.

Create a folder called HJT either in C: or My documents and place the AnalyzePC.exe in there.
This will ensure we have back ups made and it doesn't get deleted .
This is very important to have done first.
------------------------------------------------------

This is some information on a program that is installed on your client's system.

Viewpoint Manager

Viewpoint components are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting "Disable auto?updating for the Viewpoint Manager" ?? the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, you may need to let your client decide what they would like to do.

------------------------------------------------------

If client has decided to remove viewpoint do the following, If not skip to next step.

Add/Remove Programs
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following:

    Viewpoint Manager
    Viewpoint Media Player
<< Note you may only have one of these in your add/remove program list just remove the ones present
You will need to reboot computer to complete uninstall.

------------------------------------------------------

Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix.

To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Close Windows Defender

Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.

------------------------------------------------------

Please do the following:

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
---------------------------------------------------------

This is next. Do not run Yet. We are just getting it setup properly.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.

  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.

  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Reboot into SAFE MODE
By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again, as you have to be quick when you press it.

I have found that during boot up, right after the computer displays the equipment , memory, etc
installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key, the system will usually display the menu.

Tim,

Cannot thank you enough for the quick response! Have not been back to the client's home since the original post. we are planning a visit hopefully before the holidays, but if not then it will be sometime after January 6th. I will post what you request at that point. Until then I do have two questions:

1) Why AVG anti virus? Isnt that a freebie? I usually have trouble trusting those types of downloads and installs. Please comment..

2) The machine in question currently has issues booting into Safe Mode. When I finally get to the desktop in Safe Mode it either loads the desktop completely blank, or once the desktop loads it loops constantly back to the safe mode warning window, then back to the desktop, then back to the warning window..etc. The system at this point does not allow any inout from the user as it continues in this loop. Is this part of the infection or am I correct to believe that the OS is shot and a rebuild is the best medicine at this point? I am leaning toward the rebuild option and the user has been made aware of the projects intesity. Please advise.

Thanks man,
Lou

Hello aquamanlou,

1) Why AVG anti virus? Isnt that a freebie? I usually have trouble trusting those types of downloads and installs. Please comment..

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (This program is not Antivirus) it is an Anti-Spyware program. Not AVG Anti-Virus program these are two different programs. You never want to run two Antivirus programs on the same machine can cause all sorts of problems conflicts, system slow downs, and in rare cases crashes.

Yes I agree that a reformat of OS is the best option here.
