Hya P;3, Long time no chat. I know you know the drill. ;)

Your log looks clean.

I had a browser window open (not malicious site) without my recalling requesting it to open

I have learned to live with the occasional hiccup either from windows or INTERNET explorer.

This is all I see.

You have QuickTime running at Startup. This is QuickTime's system tray icon and not necessary for the program to function properly. It is considered to be a resource hog.
You will still be able to start it manually if you need it. You can fix this with HijackThis, but you will need to change the setting in QuickTime
Player itself to keep it from resetting itself.. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

Let me know how you make out.

to be honest, I am not sure whether I ran this log with quick time, bt help desk and winzip all disabled from the system tray,; I normally disable each of them after bootup as I really do not need them running ; which is my normal practice once i have fully booted up; to do a FULL log I would have to reboot and leave them all running, then grab a log with them all definitly in to compare, if that would help?

Code: Select all
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

This line tells me quick time is set to run at boot time.
Winzip and help desk are leditimate programs.

But lets go ahead and give me a log before disabling anything.

Are you still anti firewall p;3 ?

I remember the conversation a while back with you on Firewalls. I remembered you didn't care for them then. I wasn't going to push the issue. ;)

of interest; it should show my Guard IE which is the tool I use as a firewall; I am not against firewalls as such but, to try and maybe clarify a point;

re; Osprey 1"s comment about firewalls etc

a while ago I had the zone alarms on here as an experiement ; IT drove me quite nuts with its constant asking for permissions to allow this or that to happen;

I eventually tried to remove it ( I admit that in those days I was not really aware of the help and advise available to get corect guidance on how to safetly remove such programs :oops: ); in my attempts TO remove it, I ended up also deleting a somewhat vital shared element that was apparently needed for another main program

needless to say I ended up having to have a somewhat expensive pc completle reinstallation

that was my experience

windows 98 ( which is this log"s windows)does not come with a firewall ( newer windows versions DO); I suggest it is the individual"s choice what type of protection they have on their pc , ; my choice of firewall IS the guard IE; I gather there IS a newer version of the program out
and my present link to it seems non functional at present so i may well need to investigate that

I also cannot yet see how to put an image on this forum of the options available within the guard IE program to show you, as there is no image upload facility evident on here and I will need to link via imagethrust or similar

as to programs closed by me at start-up; after complete boot up, I then close winzip, quick time,and win dvd; I do also note I have find fast appearing in my "task manager" version(having said that, I now cannot locate it in the present set up!!)

for those wondering about my choice of firewall, I hope that this may explain it a bit? and I"ll see if I can find an appropriate link to the guard IE program for you to see; although a version is available by a google search :)

That log is still clean.

Findfast is a part of office...
I think what you had happen with IE was just a windows bleep. As you said you don't recall asking for it but you weren't sure.

Anything else leading you to think there is malware?
