Unread postby compo84 » December 8th, 2006, 8:48 am

i got a smithfraud infection on my computer, and was advised to download HJT and show you guys the info, so i followed the instructions on how to download it, when i tried to unzip it, a security message came up saying the file had a generric worm so i had to delete the file, is there another way i can get rid of this smithfraud without the smithfraud fix?

On our download page (top of forum) is links to an exe version of HJT - download that to your desktop and run it from that - then post the log for us to look at.

Hmmm

The files on this server are not infected - so its your AV which is doing this in error - or the malware that has been installed.

Try this copy - which has been renamed by me - hopefully its just the file name it is picking up.

http://www.malwareremoval.com/temp/cjwd-hjt.exe

save it to your desktop and run it.
Post back with the log file.

If that does not work - get the 'Itty Bitty Process Manager' from here :-

http://www.richardthelionhearted.com/~m ... loads.html

use that and provide me with a list of the running processes - also see if you can get me a copy of the installed programs from the 'add/remove programs' in control pannel.

Hello compo84,

If you are running MacAfee, this is a false positive. Update your definitions so hijackthis.exe will not be detected anymore. If you still have trouble, download hijackthis, disconnect from internet and disable McAfee. Unzip to a folder (not Internet Temp files or do not run it from inside the archive) and post a log.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/oldnews.php

McAfee is at is again, unfortunately. Yes, I am aware of the fact that McAfee detects HijackThis 1.99.1 as a generic worm. For the fourth time. Yes, I am aware of the fact that McAfee detects the StartupList standalone as an mhtml exploit webpage. This makes respectively the fifth and sixth time McAfee has mistakenly detected one of my programs as some brand of virus. And I'm getting pretty tired of this. Am I supposed to email each and every new version of a program I publish to McAfee so they can verify that UPX compression does not automatically equal a scary virus??

compo84,

Hoax.Win32.Renos is smitfraud infection.

Seeing you have McAfee, do as I suggested in my previous post please.

Download HijackThis to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe

Update McAfee defs - if no go, disable internet connection and disable McAfee.

Double click on HJTSetup.exe and by default it should install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This
Continue through the setup and let it create a Desktop Icon.
Follow all the prompts, click Finish, and let the installer start HijackThis.
Click the Do a System Scan and Save a Log File option.
Notepad will open with the Hijackthis log, please post it's content here.

Hello,

To be honest your PC should be free of spyware before installing new versions or you might face problems. So let's fix smitfraud first, disable McAfee to get a hijackthis log and we will take care of the uninstall / install problem once you're clean. McAfee has removal tools but I need to know what suite you have. Is that Antivirus 8.0 or Security Suite 8 ?

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Update AVG.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
  • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
  • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.
______________________________

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Better late than never. ;) At least it shows us another baddie.

Ok, follow instructions below now and don't do anything by yourself unless I ask you. :)

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. Make sure that you have one blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
"SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"

Save it to your desktop as Fixme.reg. Save it as :
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fixme.reg

Locate Fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

Hello :)

Run HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix Checked

Follow each link in the exact order as listed in the page. Use Add /Remove steps first and download the manual removal tool for each part of McAfee to your HDD and run the removal tools. Reboot when asked.

Reinstall McAfee.
Installation of your McAfee programs: here.
If the download or the CD doesn't include the Security Center, go here.

Let me know how everything went and how the computer is running now.
