I've tried Spybot, Adaware, MS Defender, and others.

I'm running Avast (up to date) and Kerio firewall, and have the 2 exe files above on my desktop and they keep trying to install something, and are stopped by Avast but Avast cannot remove them, and they keep coming back.

NB I'm having real trouble booting to safe mode, my monitor keeps showing no signal, and I cannot ever see the black boot screens, so could also do with a cmd prompt that will rebooot in safe mode in XP.

Using Firefox also, and there keeps being mention of temp internet files.

Here is my hijack this log

Hello laticsforlife,

Sorry for the delayed reply, your post got overlooked unfortunatly. If you still need help can you please post a fresh hijackthis log.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Notice!
A new version of Kaspersky Virus Scanner has been released on August 8, 2006. If you have installed a previous version, you must unistall that program first before installing the new version. To uninstall, please go to the computer control panel and select "Add/Remove Programs." Close all Internet Explorer windows before uninstalling the Kaspersky Online Scanner.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save Report As button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • File Type: Text file (*.txt).
    • Name: Kav.txt for example
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi :)

Scan took a while tro do hence late reply,

No worries, we all know that KAV scan takes some time.
______________________________

BTW I'm told from other Google searches that this is an MSN related virus.

Yep it is, and a nasty one. :(
Messenger itself got infected as seen here :
C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.MSNMaker.ab skipped.

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
Using windows explorer, open C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger folder.

Do you see a file called msnmsgr.exe.bak or msnmsgr.exe.old ?
Or a folder called bak that has msnmsgr.exe inside ?
______________________________

Fix this entry with hijackthis, we don't need combofix running at each boot

Run HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [combofix] c:\subs\combofix.cmd

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click Fix Checked

See if Safe boot works better or not.
______________________________

First ... with regards to this :

NB I'm having real trouble booting to safe mode, my monitor keeps showing no signal, and I cannot ever see the black boot screens, so could also do with a cmd prompt that will rebooot in safe mode in XP.

We can force a Safe boot, but .. if some registry settings are borked, we will be in serious trouble, you won't be able to boot XP at all. So I would like to know a couple of things first.

1. Do you have a XP CD ?

2. Some registry settings I wanna check first.

Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that wordwrap is turned off.

reg.exe query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment" /s >> look.txt
start notepad look.txt

Save it to your Desktop as look.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name:look.bat

Locate look.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. When notepad opens, copy/paste the content in your reply.

Next ... Click Start > Run, and paste the following into the box, then click OK:

regedit /e /a C:\show.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot"

That will export the contents of that registry key to C:\show.txt file.

Open c:\show.txt in Notepad and copy/paste the content as a reply.

Thanks :)

Unfortunately, windows packed up this morning entirely.

It wouldn't boot fully, although there is no hardware fault, the software was obviously knackered.

Seeing as I also had a graphics card issue, and a load PC, I've bitten the bullet and got a new tower with a new HDD, although this one is still being used inside as a slave.

as MSN is being run from the new C drive, anything on the old drive is now defunct, and will be slowly deleted to provide space.

Thanks for your help, I'm sure that my meddling kids will mean I'll need it again in the future!!

Hello :)

Unfortunately, windows packed up this morning entirely.

It wouldn't boot fully, although there is no hardware fault, the software was obviously knackered.

I'm sorry to hear that. Might have been partially the display adapter but the viruses present too.

It really comes through Messenger, style of messages ... click here to see pics or hey did you know ... Your variant is pretty new and some of the infected computers show the presence of a keylogger and a rootkit. So please ... since we won't be able to figure that ever out, may I suggest the following as a precaution:

1. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

2. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

and what ever else seems appropriate.

Seeing as I also had a graphics card issue, and a load PC, I've bitten the bullet and got a new tower with a new HDD, although this one is still being used inside as a slave.

In a certain way the monitor signal was a hint for a hardware problem indeed. Just one thing, if the drive is being used as a slave, I would insist on running a KAV scan on the PC so that we could delete all infected files before something happens to the new drive or at least wipe out the files mentioned above, drive letter will be changed but the folder / path will be the same. Be extremly carefull when copying files or saving files from the infected drive.

MSN ... I don't know which version was installed but be sure to check out all options, especially security and privacy ... try to limit as much as possible.

    You can download IE-SPYAD here
A tutorial can be found here
  • Hosts File
A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=53#53

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress enough how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.

OK did a new Kas scan and it picked up 4 infected files, all of which were on the old drive. One was in the recycle bin, 1 was in a P2P file, 1 was in Avast log file, and 1 in a system restore point file (now superceded).

I deleted the lot and uninstalled Avast, and am now running Spybot and Adaware, with Kerio Personal Firewall, AOL Active Virus Shield, Spyware Terminator, and Windows Defender.

I'm also cleaning the old disk bit by bit as I find more programs no longer working.

Touch wood, no new virus issues arising. :D

Hello,

I'm also cleaning the old disk bit by bit as I find more programs no longer working.

That's normal, you will have to reinstall most of them. Each program has entries in the Registry and they of course don't show up in the new install. That's why they need to be reinstalled.

Touch wood, no new virus issues arising.

Good very pleased to hear that. :)

Take care and happy surf,
