Hello vodkagal....welcome to Malware Removal...

I do not see anything particularly sinister in your HJT log. Can you give a bit more information about the software you are being prompted to buy or the problem you are having? There are a few things we can do but let's this first.

Let's try this to see if anything is hiding from HijackThis:

Navigate to this file on your hard drive (right-click on start and select explore...then navigate to the file):

C:\Documents and Settings\Jenny Felstead\My Documents\My Downloads\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe

Then right-click on the file and choose rename. Rename the file something like scanner.exe or analyzethis.exe (anything will do). Then double-click the file to run it and choose do a system scan and save a logfile. Post the HijackThis log it produces here.

Thanks for your reply...A good example has just happened when I went to read your reply.

I tried to paste it here but it wouldn't let me so here is a rough outline of the pop up

Security Update Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Wanadoo
at risk of Trojan SPM/LX
You have to download one of the latest security solutions to clean up detected virus. Choose a product & click download to proceed.
It then says to choose either WinAntiVirus Pro 2006 or WinAntiSoyware to download a free scan!!!!!

Also I have had pop ups from a Suduko site and Strike it up .com plus several others that appear to pop up when I am browsing.

I will now do what you asked in your reply and post the results to you.

Hmmm....that's odd. You're telling me that there is a problem with WinAntiVirusPro which is usually a Vundo infection, but I still don't see it in your HJT log even after renaming it.

From researching it a bit, I'm wondering if it's Vundo or Smitfraud....let's take a closer look! Are you getting a pop-up that looks something like this:

Image

?

Let's check a few things...if it's smitfraud, we'll get rid of it first. If not, we'll look at some other things:

1. Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Alternate download site if the above link does not work: SmitfraudFix
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other option until you are directed to do so!

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

No problem Jenny....glad to try and help. Hang in there!

It does not appear to be smitfraud based on that log...so let's look for Vundo:

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encounters a file it can not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run again on reboot,

If this occurs, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

2. Download this file :
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

3. Post back with:
  • the VundoFix log
  • the ComboFix log and
  • a new HJT log

You may need to use multiple replies to fit them all without being cut off...that's OK...

That's what I thought would happen, which is why I added the ComboFix too...but I had to check.

Thanks Jenny...

That's a long combofix log, and it's going to take me awhile to go through it completely...but on first glance I don't see too much other than it appears that recently you added some online game programs (iWin, Zylom, Oberon Media). I need to research these things and the rest. I'm also going to see if I can get another set of 'eyes' to look at your logs and what we have done to see if I'm missing anything.

In the meantime, can you tell me when these problems seemed to have started? It may help me in analyzing the log.

While I'm researching the ComboFix log can you do this for me:

1. Generate a HJT uninstall list:

Open HijackThis (we renamed it to scanner.exe), click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

2. Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop (choose "I ACCEPT" then click "DOWNLOAD" on the website).

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > "Scan" then > "Next".

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

I want this rootkit scan to make sure nothing is hiding the malware on your system...I'll get back to you again as soon as I can.
