Trojans and Spyware

Unread postby Jefferson » June 14th, 2005, 6:51 pm

I have had problems with trojans and other spyware over the past few weeks. These have added favorites, changed desktop and added icons to desktop. I'm currently getting clean scans from Spybot, Adaware, MS Beta and Trojan Hunter, but don't trust that I've removed everything successfully. Please review my logfile and let me know how to proceed. I'm most appreciative of any help that can be provided.

Jefferson,

We have a few items to clean up.

I am suggesting removal of the ontrack cleanup from the start menu. You can run it from programs any time.
The HP KBD.EXE is very buggy. Microsoft even has a bulletin on it. We will remove it here.
There are remnants of Weatherbug. Older Weatherbug was loaded with spyware, the new one is not.
We will attempt removal if it still shows in Add/Remove. You can install it fresh later if you wish.
Those and a few Hijack things..... here goes:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel.
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight the following entry (if it exists) and choose Remove :
WEATHERBUG
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines/programs may have already been removed when you did the Add/Remove - do not be surprised if they are missing)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.updatesearches.com/search.php?qq=%1
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us8.hpwis.com/

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BCNT] C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\BCNT.EXE

O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.neededware.com

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
------------------------------------------------------------
Stop Processes Prior to Deletion
Close ALL open windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete together to bring up the task manager.
Under the processes tab, if it is visible, check the box 'Show processes from all users'.
One at a time, highlight each of these that are listed and "End Process":

KBD.EXE
BackWeb-137903.exe
BCNT.EXE
rwt.exe
bqoefmzk.exe

-----------------------------------------------------------
File and Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to these files, or use find (F3) if the folder is not shown; then delete the files if present:
C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\BCNT.EXE <== Probably C:\Program Files\AWS\Weatherbug\BCNT.EXE
C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rwt.exe
c:\windows\system32\bqoefmzk.exe
C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.

Find and Delete these folders, if present:
C:\Program Files\AWS\Weatherbug\
C:\Program Fils\Updates from HP\137903\Program\

Note any folder you cannot delete.
You may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before a target folder can be deleted.

If there were any files you could not delete then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste the full path of each file to delete, one at a time, into the box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say "No" each time until the last one has been pasted in, whereupon you should answer "Yes".
Let the system reboot.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File. When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------

askey,

Thanks for your time and help. Two of the files were still present after I performed your instructions. I ran HJT again and believe they're deleted. The files were the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rwt] C:\WINDOWS\System32\rwt.exe

Here is my latest logfile.

Hi Jefferson,
Great job!
Your log is clean. I have some suggestions about how to keep it that way. A bit more work will make your machine much safer.
  • Disable and Enable WinXP System Restore .
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files. You will also lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
    - Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    - On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
    - Click OK twice, and then click "Yes" when you are prompted to restart the computer.
    After it Reboots:
    - Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    - On the System Restore tab, Clear the check mark beside 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
This disable/re-enable sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once , directly after removal of a malware infection.
  • Secure your Internet Explorer
    - From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    - Click once on the Security tab
    - Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    - Click once on the Custom Level button.
    - Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    - Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    - Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    - Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    - Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to - Prompt
    - Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to - Prompt
    - When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    - If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    - Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link here: Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest available security updates installed. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
Install SP2. If you are on dial up, the download is too large, and you should send for the free or nearly free CD here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links to this program and others can be found here: Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Install SpywareGuard. It runs in the background, like your Anti-Virus program, to stop Browser Helper Objects (BHO's) from installing. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
  • Install IE-SPYAD Find it here: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC.
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install WinPatrol - Download and Install WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
    - WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. It also provides selective cookie management.
  • Install CCleaner - Download and Install CCleaner. Summary page is http://www.ccleaner.com/. Download page is http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html. When you start CCleaner, choose the Windows tab. Check everything EXCEPT be sure the Advanced part of the menu is all Unchecked. Choose Analyze. Let the Analyze portion finish. Then choose Run Cleaner. Under options, you can set it to clean every time you boot - a good idea.
  • Update all these programs regularly - Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Good Luck,

askey,

Thanks again for your help including the preventative suggestions. I have already downloaded each program. Are there restrictions or conflicts I should be concerned about in running multiple malware blockers in real time. Currently, I just have Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Norton Anti-Virus and Trojan Hunter actively blocking with a Zone Alarm Firewall. Can I use all of your recommendations with these?

regards.

Jefferson,

Glad to see you have some good protection already.
The main issue is not to have two anti-virus apps both running auto-protection. Your combination of Trojan Hunter and Norton seem to work well together. I haven't heard of any conflicts.

The suggested programs should not cause compatibility issues with your present setup. You probably don't need Spybot's active Teatimer option while Microsoft anti-spyware is running. There is a lot of overlap there. You can install Spybot S&D without it. When the MS product goes off beta version next month, you may decide to put in the Teatimer.

Except for Winpatrol and SpywareGuard, the other products are primarily passive 'fences' and scanners. Winpatrol is especially good because it gives you a look at quite a few security aspects of your system all in one place. It will query your intentions whenever you install a new program. (MS anti-spyware does that also.)
I have every one of the suggested programs and NortonAV on my own system. I have a-squared instead of Trojan Hunter (both are excellent), but all programs run at once, and have no problems.
