Hi Lee,

The Action History Log would have been the log produced by Killbox but it could not find the files concerned therefore it did not produce the log. In the meantime HijackThis has successfully removed them both. Well done on Update 9 for Java, we still have to remove the old Java installation and a couple of things from the HijackThis log BUT your log is otherwise looking clean.

Click Start, select Control Panel and open Add or Remove Programs…. Scroll down to find Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2 and select Remove. Whilst you are in there please remove HaxFix 4.21 as you do not have the Haxdoor infection

Start your HijackThis and click on Scan
  1. Click in the check-box to the left of each of the following entries, if found
    • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
  2. With all windows closed except HijackThis, select Fix Checked

Please reboot the computer and post a new HijackThis log and advise whether you have any continuing problems.

Okay,awesome..here's the log,and I'll let you know if any problems persist on this computer, which hopefully they won't.
Thanks a ton for helping me out with this,I'm really glad I didn't have to reboot and that you helped stop it from getting worse. I probably won't be using internet explorer anymore, haha.

Hi Lee,

I would like you to do a bit of housekeeping to your computer. My favourite cleaner is CCleaner which I use every 2 weeks (along with a few other housekeeping elements)

  1. Download CCleaner
    1. Select the Download Latest Version link (top of green column) and save to your desktop
    2. Right-click the ccsetup127.exe file on your desktop and select Open
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions through to the Install Options page. I suggest you only retain the following 2 options
      • Add Desktop Shortcut
      • Automatically check for updates etc…
    4. Click Install
      To setup CCleaner
    5. Click on the CCleaner icon on your desktop.
    6. From the menu on the left select Options
    7. Now select Advanced. On the right remove the check against Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
    8. Select Cookies. When CCleaner is run it will remove all of the cookies in the left window; if there are cookies that you wish to retain then select them and transfer them to the right window. Multiple selections can be made by holding down the Ctrl key before selecting.
    9. Select Cleaner from the left menu and the Windows tab
      • Under Internet Explorer place ticks in all but the last box
      • Under Windows Explorer tick the last two only
      • Under System tick all boxes
      • There is no need to tick anything under Advanced
    10. From the menu on the left click on Analyze
    11. When the analysis is complete, click on Run Cleaner and OK at the next screen.
    12. Close CCleaner
  2. I see that you have the Ewido suite already installed so another scan with Ewido would not go amiss and if you finish this off by using the Defragment tool built into MS your computer could be a lot faster
  3. I do have other recommendations to keep you healthy but will await your next post

Hi..Thanks a ton.
Alright,I downloaded CCleaner and went through all of those steps, ran the scan and defragged all the drives, including the L Drive which i just re-connected to the computer.
(There shouldn't be any risk for that drive since I unhooked it from the computer right after the malware came up on my C drive,is there?)

I tested out internet explorer just to see if any pop ups came up or anything suspicious, and so far it's been running really well..although I'm very certain the only browser i'm going to use for now on is firefox.

Thanks so much for helping me out with this,I really appreciate it =)

Hi Lee, I would like to carry out a final check of the computer -
  1. Go to Start and select Run. Type Notepad in the new box
  2. Copy the text from within the quote-box to Notepad.
  3. Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad file and select File and choose Save as:
    • Name the file peek.bat
    • Save as Type: All files
    • Select the Desktop icon on the left to save it on the desktop.
  4. Double click on peek.bat and let it run. When finished it will open a file in Notepad That file will be named startup.txt
  5. Please post the contents of startup.txt into your next reply here.

if not exist Files MkDir Files

regedit /e peek1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg"
regedit /e peek2.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder"
type peek1.txt >> startup.txt
type peek2.txt >> startup.txt
del peek*.txt
start notepad startup.txt

Copy files\*.txt = startup.txt
rmdir /s /q files
Start Notepad startup.txt

Hi Lee,

Well done, your computer appears to be clean. Just a tidy up required.
  1. First we make sure that any files in a System Restore point can not re-infect your computer by removing all old system restore points.
    1. Select the Start button and from the available options
    2. Right-click the My Computer option and select Properties.
    3. Click on the System Restore tab.
    4. Check the box against Turn off System Restore on all drives. Click OK
    5. Click Yes to confirm, then restart the computer
    6. After the restart, re-enable System Restore by following steps a-c, but in step c, click to clear the Turn off System Restore on all drives. check box.
  2. You can also remove any programs that we downloaded but I recommend that you retain CCleaner
  3. Finally, HijackThis makes backups of all corrections made
    • Open HijackThis and select either Open the Misc Tools section or Config button
    • Click the Backups button and select Delete All and then Yes
    • Close HijackThis

Preventative measures
  1. Firstly Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options .
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  2. The following 2 programmes should be run at least once every two weeks after updating.
    • Please update your version of Spybot S & D to version 1.4. Spybot has preventative tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer. A tutorial can be found here
    • AdAware scans for known spyware on your computer. A tutorial can be found here
  3. In addition I would suggest that you install the following 3 free programs, keep these updated as they are background tools
    1. SpywareBlaster - will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A tutorial can be found here
    2. SpywareGuard - provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method; it scans files before you open them and prevents execution if spyware is detected. It also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection. A tutorial can be found here
    3. IE-SpyAd puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. A tutorial is available here
  4. A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer. A tutorial can be found here which has the MVPS Hosts File on site. Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.

Bluetack's Hosts File and Hosts Manager - contains most if not all the known spyware sites, sites responsible for hijacks, rogue applications etc... Download Bluetack's Hosts file here and the Hosts Manager here
  5. WinPatrol - uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes a snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference files. You can read more about ithere with a download from here
  6. Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware". You will find the list here
  7. Windows Updates – It is very important to ensure that Internet Explorer and Windows are kept up to date with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. Click on the Start button and select Windows Update, follow the online instructions from there.
  8. On a similar vein do ensure that all of your Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware software are also kept up to date.
  9. To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some excellent guide lines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

Best wishes and safe surfing

Alright, thanks so much. I went and did all of those steps and downloaded those programs.

The only real problem that I see right now which affected my computer since before the malware started is that I have no access to the disc drive anymore, which is odd because i'm not sure what could have changed that setting. Everything else is working fine though... I'm not really too sure how to get access to the CD drive again...it's not showing up on "My Computer" and when I tried to burn a cd through Nero it did not recognize the blank cd in the drive.

Thanks so much for your time on helping me with this malware problem,i'll definitely be more careful with my computer.

Hi Lee,

That is most likely to be a hardware problem. There are two possible causes, the first being a bad connection of either power or ribbon, the second is that the drive itself has failed.

I can not be more exact because there are so many inponderables about CD/DVD drives and case fittings but I would check the back of the drive to ensure that both cables are fitted properly (taking proper anti-static precautions), if they are securely fitted and the PSU output is good then it would be off to ebuyer for me to get a new drive because my drive is certainly out of the guarantee time :D

Hmmm, definitely not the Cd/Dvd drive's problem because I went out today and purchased a new drive and tried to install it,but had the same problem where the system doesn't recognize or display the cd drive.
I went to Properties of My Computer and kept trying to update the driver, and disabled it,restarted it,then enabled it and tried pretty much everything but it is not working... it's definitely not the driver's problem though...maybe something in the registry?
Now I have to take the new drive back since it's not the old one's problem, haha oh man....such luck i'm having lately!!

I'm not sure if you deal with driver issues or not.
Still, thanks a TON for helping me out with the malware problems, I'm so thankful for that. Dumb computer problems!

I do not advise on driver problems specifically but I have held Microsoft qualifications that lead me to still suggest hardware as the probable cause of your problem.

In the previous post I suggested power/ide cable problems as well, what you have not proved yet is whether the power supply to your drive is good - to use an analogy, a bulb that does not come on will never work until a blown fuse is replaced... :D

Do you have a spare plug from your PSU that you can try, ideally not off the same branch as the 'possible' faulty one.

Do you have a spare cable to replace a possible faulty one. On a similar vein most MB have a couple of IDE output slots, have you tried swapping them over?

Can you try your CD in a different computer?

These are all things that I would try in your situation.

Whatever the outcome, best wishes for the future

Is it possible that anything stuck on my system from the last time?
:-\ I've been safe on the computer and updating/scanning things numerously, but recently said there was another detect on a scan and now a ctfmon.exe application comes up through task manager.
Agh! Terrible luck

Your log appears to be clean and ctfmon.exe is a legitimate file from Microsoft Office. The detection report is probably just that - notification by the program concerned that it had intercepted and removed a baddie. :)

This in turn could well be because you are running an unpatched version of Internet Explorer, please update or download Internet Explorer 7

Alright,thanks..I was just a little paranoid and had a scan result saying it was adware in spybot search and destroy and was confused by the new process.

Thanks a ton again for all the help before!
