Winantiviruspro/Other Possible malware

Unread postby leemonster » October 12th, 2006, 7:53 am

Hi,Recently I unfortunately have gotten Winantiviruspro onto my computer which causes many results in the scans i've been doing lately trying to get rid of it,coming up with results of worms, trojans,popups/etc.(I am also unsure if the malware has spread)
I have tried many ways to get rid of it using many of the programs suggested on this website and some personal spyware and virus programs as well. I am not sure in which order of programs to use and how exactly to completely rid of it. Apologies if i am posting this in the wrong area of the forum...any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, here's some of the logs I have done...I can re-do them if i have any error in how i posted them, sorry,I have very little experience in posting these.

Then I renamed HIJACK THIS to SOULFURY because many have said it is easier for the malware to catch it if the name is not changed, and this is the log I got for that:

I Am very unsure as to what to do beyond this, or in which order to attempt to get rid of this, everytime i go back into internet explorer to browse, instead of firefox, it keeps coming up with popups and I'm very concerned that it keeps spreading to the other files which said were deleted with all of the other scans.
My apologies if I have posted this in the wrong topic.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,I am very worried about my computer and contemplating many things from either rebooting windows after saving all of the data i need to keep,or attempting to rid of the malware.
Thanks for your time,Lee.

Hi leemonster and welcome to the Malware Removal forums. My name is Whisperer and I will be helping you with your problem.

I would like you to produce a list of installed programs to assist me in any cleanup.
  1. To do this open your HijackThis
    1. Click on Open the Misc Tools section or Config… button, depending on how you are set up.
    2. If you used the Config... option then click the Misc Tools tab
    3. Select Open Uninstall Manager , a list of your installed programs will be displayed.
    4. Select the Save List… button and save the file to your desktop.
  2. Please post a copy of this list in your reply

You appear to be running both Avast and AVG anti-virus programmes. It is unwise to run both at the same time as they can cause a mutual interference and actually reduce your anti-virus protection. Please either stop one of them from running or remove one entirely from your computer.

I will now look at your logs and get back to you as soon as I am able.

Thank you for taking the time to help me out with this...I actually normally only use Avg virus protection, but installed avast for the purpose of doing a thorough boot scan, and for some reason avast caught more results in the scan that avg did... i'll delete one of the programs though, to make sure they don't have an intererference.

Hi Lee,

I note that you also have Prevx1, I did not spot it in my first look through the log, as with AVG/Avast you will need to choose one antivirus solution only to keep active/installed.

You have evidence of a Vundo infection on your computer which we will deal with first

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log (with only one antivirus running :D ).

Note: It is possible that VundoFix will encounter a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

There are still some problems and i'm not sure if any malware is still on the system since i have not been running IE to check and see if the pop up comes back up,because i wanted to be sure everything was gone to check internet explorer again.. Currently i'm only using firefox to browse but i'm still a little paranoid that something else will come up.

That is fine Lee,

You still have some things to fix and I am working on that just now, back as soon as I can.

Lee,

I note that you have ZoneAlarm on your computer but I see no evidence of it running - what Firewall are you using?

If you are relying on the Microsoft Firewall be advised that it is a one-way firewall in that it only attempts to stop malware from getting on to your computer, if anything does get through it is then free to communicate to the outside world without hindrance.

A firewall, such as ZoneAlarm, is a two way firewall that will also try and prevent any malware from exporting information from your computer. If you do not have a 2 way firewall running then I strongly urge you to start ZoneAlarm and get it updated soonest. :)

Still looking at the logs...

Okay,thanks..I started running Zone Alarm again.

If I don't respond in 2 days it is because I've left and won't be back until about Sunday. Just thought i'd mention that so there'd be no assumptions that the problem had been fixed/worsened.

Hi Lee,

Before we move on I will make some observations about programs that you have installed on your computer. These fall into different categories ranging from Spyware to limited use programs and out-of-date programs.

  • You have two Spyware related problems, the first of these is SpyNoMore which is filed as a rogue spyware remover in that it throws up false positives in an attempt to get you to purchase a copy of it; it is not very effective as an anti-spyware tool either. I note that it is not showing up in your Uninstall log so we will include that one in Killbox. The second is actual spyware called hpdj01.exe, we will remove that after the Killbox tool
  • You have InCD installed on your computer – this is of limited use as it will produce CD's that are only safely capable of being read by another InCD equipped system, not very useful if you use it to back-up your data. :) The Nero program that installed it is more than capable of burning CD's for you and it is not restrictive in use – I recommend that you remove InCD from your system. I have included instructions for its removal later in the post.
  • You also have P2P programs, SoulSeek Client 156c and Limeware; I would be failing you if I did not point out that P2P is one of the easiest ways for you to become infected with malware. Both of these programs fall into the Clean category in that they are not bundled with any form of malware BUT I can not say the same for the downloads that are made with them. I would recommend their removal.
  • I note that you have 2 old versions of Java on your machine, they can both go as they have probably been compromised by hackers by now which would make their use not a very wise thing to do :) I will make recommendations below to remove these and update to the latest Java version.
We will continue with the removal of the vundo infection first

  1. Please download PocketKillbox by Option^Explicit Software from here
    1. Click the Killbox.zip file and choose Extract
    2. I suggest you extract it to its own folder on your desktop
  2. Select the files from within the quote box and place on the clipboard by selecting Ctrl+C
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqp.dll
    C:\Program Files\SpyNoMore\SNM.exe
  3. Open the Killbox folder and click to open killbox.exe
    1. Click on the File menu and then select the Paste from Clipboard item
    2. Click on Unregister .dll Before Deleting
    3. Click on Delete on Reboot.
    4. Place a tick in the box next to End Explorer Shell While Killing File
Click All Files to the right of the flashing green "Single files"
    5. Click Yes at the confirmation message that files will be deleted on next reboot
    6. Click Yes to reboot.
    7. Click OK at any PendingFileRenameOperations prompt (and please let me know if you receive this message!).

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try Killbox again.
    8. After rebooting, open up Killbox again. Click File -> Logs -> Actions History Log
    9. Post the Actions History log in your next reply.
  4. If you have decided to follow my recommendation with regards InCD then…
    • Please open Add or Remove Programs from the Control Panel
    • Once the list has populated scroll down, locate and select InCD then click the Change/Remove option
    • If you wish then this is the time to remove SoulSeek Client 156c and Limewire
  5. Now we will remove the spyware starting by disabling it, deleting it and finally cleaning it up together with some other undesirables showing in your HijackThis Log

    • Disable the spyware by:
      1. Click Start and select Run
      2. In the new window type services.msc
      3. Scroll down to hpdj01 and right click on it.
      4. Select Properties and under Service Status click the Stop button
      5. Change the Startup Type to Disabled.
    • Delete the offending Service by:
      1. Now open HijackThis and click Config
      2. Select the Misc Tools tab and the Delete an NT service… option.
      3. In the Delete window, type hpdj01 and press OK
      4. OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.
    • Start your HijackThis and click on Scan
      1. Click in the check-box to the left of each of the following entries, if found
        • O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F25C7C64-709E-4C75-9E79-0F4FD12CEB24} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqp.dll
        • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SNM] C:\Program Files\SpyNoMore\SNM.exe /startup
        • O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
        • O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtsqp - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqp.dll
        • O23 - Service: hpdj01 - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\hpdj01.exe (file missing)
      2. With all windows closed except HijackThis, select Fix Checked
    • As I said at the beginning your Java installation is out of date as the current release is Update 8.
      • Use Internet Explorer and go to this link to update your Java.
      • Scroll down and select Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8
    • Please post
      • The Actions History log
      • A new HijackThis log
      • An up-to-date Uninstall list

Okay I went and deleted InCD and Limewire (Would it be a bad thing to still keep Soulseek? I use it primarilly for uploading, not for downloading)

I'm guesing that getting rid of the old Javas is one of the last steps, unless you want me to go ahead and uninstall them as well.

I had some problems with the Killbox program...for some reason after I copied the files in the quotebox by using Ctrl+C, and pasting it from the clipboard, nothing showed up. I'm not sure why that did not work,I seemed to follow the steps accordingly.

Hi Lee,

Back a little earlier than I expected :)

The removal of Soulseek (and the others) are purely optional fixes and as you use it as an upload tool there should be no problems.

Do not worry about the Killbox results, they could be hidden and tomorrow we will try another way to get rid of them - Killbox is a clever little program in that if it can not find the file it does not display it!

When you have finished the remaining fixes please reboot the computer and then post the new HijackThis log and the updated Uninstall list.
