Hi

Welcome to MalWare Removal! I'm looking through your log now, and will post back soon.

Until I complete my training, everything that I post to you must be checked by an expert - so there may be a small delay between posts.

Thanks for your patience. :)

Hi Ryuji35.

I note that you are using Limewire. Please do not use this program until we have cleaned your system and I have given the all-clear. Also, please do not download anything, unless I ask you to do so.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install. Make sure that Run fixit is checked and then click Finish. The fix will begin - follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so (your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal).

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Now lets check some settings on your system.

Click on Start and then Control Panel.
If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double-click on Network Connections.
Then right-click on your default connection, usually Local Area Connection, and left-click on Properties. Click the Networking tab.
Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.

Next, click on Start, then Run, type cmd and click OK. A command prompt (black window) will open.
Type ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)
Hit the Enter key, type exit then hit Enter again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the FixWareout logfile (C:\fixwareout\report.txt), as a reply to this thread.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{0BB7FDE2-136A-43A4-8AEB-BACA504C328A}: NameServer = 85.255.115.61,85.255.112.97
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{F09975C5-DBD3-4F44-8452-C562FC441BA0}: NameServer = 85.255.115.61,85.255.112.97
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 85.255.115.61 85.255.112.97

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

There are a couple of files we need to delete. We therefore need to make sure that we can see all of your system files:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Advanced Settings: Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) option
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
AVG Anti-Spyware:

You must uninstall Ewido anti-spyware before installing this program. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall ewido anti-spyware.

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under How to act? click Recommended actions and select Quarantine from the menu.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
Click on Start then My Computer and find the following files, shown highlighted in red. Delete any found but don't worry if they're missing.
  • C:\Windows\System32\CSQXQ.EXE <-- File only
  • C:\Windows\System32\DMGHX.EXE <-- File only
Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (this must done before saving the report).
    • When Ewido has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

We now need to run FixWareout again. You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Run FixWareout. The fix will begin - follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer. Please do so (your system may take longer than usual to load - this is normal).

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Now lets recheck some settings on your system.

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • A new HijackThis log
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • The contents of the FixWareout logfile (C:\fixwareout\report.txt)
How's your computer running now? Are you still getting redirected?

We seem to have got rid of the infection. Is it just links in search engine results that you're having trouble with, or is it all hyperlinks?

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 9.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
Download Hoster and unzip/extract it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on Hoster.exe to launch the program.
  • If you see red text in the box under Editing Tools:
    • Press the Make Hosts Writable button
  • Press the Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts File button and OK
  • Click on Make Hosts Read Only to secure it against further infection.
  • Exit the programme.
Reboot your computer.

Please post another HijackThis log and let me know if you are still having trouble. If so, could you please explain your problem in a bit more detail. Don't forget to answer my question about the links.

Hi Ryuji35.

Congratulations - your log appears to be clear of malware. :) I'm pleased that you have fixed the problem with non-displaying pages. There are a couple of things that we need to tidy up. Please delete the following tools and reports:
  • FixWareout and the report (C:\fixwareout\report.txt)
  • Hoster
ATF Cleaner and AVG Anti-Spyware are useful programs. I suggest that you keep them.

You haven't updated Java Runtime, as instructed in my last post. Failure to do this will leave you open to infection. I therefore repeat the instructions here and suggest that you do this straightaway.

The following is my standard 'speech' once someone's computer is clean. Forgive me if you already do some, or all, of the following.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore - You should disable and then re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point. You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here: Windows XP System Restore Guide
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to 'Prompt'
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to 'Disable'
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to 'Disable'
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to 'Prompt'
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to 'Prompt'
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to 'Prompt'
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the OK button to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti-Virus Software - It is very important that you have an anti-virus program running on your computer. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a list of some online and stand-alone anti-virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  • Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (even more if you can). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk. For an article on firewalls, and a list of some available ones, see this link:
Computer Safety Online - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update regularly. This will ensure you always have the latest security updates installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • If they are not already present, I would recommend that you download and install some, or all, of the following programs (all free):
    • Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer, alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Instructions for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
    • Ad-Aware SE Personal - Install and download Ad-Aware SE Personal. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Instructions for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
    • SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and websites into your Internet Explorer and/or Firefox browser settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all of these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.
