Hi all,

Thankfully you're on the net. What a nice suprise. I've run a couple of Anti-spyware programs - Spyware Doctor, Ewido etc. - then CCleaner -and then started the computer in Safe Mode and saved the HiJack This and the Installed Programs log as well. Not only is the computer (a Compaq nx6125 - Windows sp2) super-slow to start it also seems to have picked up some malware problems. Perhaps you could help me :

Hi ElRey, :)

Welcome to MR forum.

I cannot see any sign of malware in your log. You need to update your Java as it's a slightly older version and therefore vulnerable.

Click Start>Run, type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter. From the list
  • Remove all entries J2SE or J2SE Runtime Environment that are listed.
Now reboot your computer.
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8
The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Have you ever defragged your hard disk? Check if it needs defragging.

To open Disk Defragmenter, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter. Use Analyze to determine if your system needs to be defragmented. Please select Defragment if it does. It may take a long time if you've never done it before.

Post a fresh HijackThis log taken in Normal Mode.

Thanks MRU Master,

Unfortunately the computer issues have all been happening at end of thesis time so I haven't got back until now. Have followed your instructions on desktop and is working the bomb but the laptop is still creating problems.

1. Can't Save As in Word documents (don't have necessary permissions -need to log onto Credential Manager but that is to no avail)

2. In touch with HP but useless !! Tried to remove Credential Manager but have an invalid character (Error 1324) in pathname problem. This happened again with removing old Java runtime engine.

3. Sorry, i realise this falls outside of the forum's purpose but Credential Manager is behaving like malware and I can't follow your other recommendations yet. Also, for a relatively new machine (and defragmented) it is still as slow as a wet week. So maybe something evil lurks ??

Thanks again

Hi Elrey,

Sorry, I somehow missed your reply.

Have followed your instructions on desktop and is working the bomb but the laptop is still creating problems.

It would be best if you post a HijackThis log for your laptop too, so that we can see if there is any malware.

MRU Master,

OK, I seem to have got the logfiles mixed up and posted the laptop logfile by mistake. So, I'll post the desktop just to see what you think and then I'll chase up a new laptop logfile. I did manage to remove Credential Manager in the end and this seems to have solved the problem. :)

Thanks so much for your help

Hi Elrey,

First of all, you don't seem to have any of the Service Packs installed for Windows XP on your desktop, while Internet Explorer seems to have SP1. Can you please let me know how that came about? You should at least get SP1a here.

You are using Download Accelerator - DAP. Please be informed that it delivers popup/popunder ads, and tracks your internet usage. You can find safer alternatives here:
I would recommend that you remove it.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove it.

Then using Windows Explorer, navigate to locate and delete the C:\Program Files\DAP folder.

Scan with HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following entries, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... r=iesearch
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... ar=msnhome
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... r=iesearch
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... r=iesearch
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd={SUB_PRD}&clcid={SUB_CLSID}&pver={SUB_PVER}&ar=home
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

You have the following O6 line indicating some restriction on the IE/Control Panel access rights suggesting either you or an administrator set some policies or you used Spybot's Home Page and Option Lock down features. If not, you can fix it.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Make sure that all browsers/windows/applications/email are closed. Click on fix checked. Exit HijackThis.

==============================================

Run an online scan at Panda's ActiveScan
  • Please go here and perform a full system scan. (use Internet Explorer)
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
  • A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
  • Enter your Country.
  • Enter your State/Province.
  • Enter your Valid Email and click send.
  • Select either Home User or Company.
  • Click the big Scan Now button.
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it.
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan.
  • Click on Local Disks to start the scan.
  • Once finished, click see report, then click Save report and save it to your desktop.
NOTE: Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry.

==============================================

Restart your computer and scan with HijackThis again. Save the report.

==============================================

Post back the results of the Panda online scan and a fresh HijackThis log please.

Sorry,

Been a little busy. I apologise for that and I am impressed that you have chased up a reply from me. Pretty unusual for an online forum.

Looks like I have a dodgy copy of Windows on the desktop which would explain the lack of service patches. I'll be onto that one shortly. With the painfully slow laptop...

The Panda online scan returned a "No problems found" so there was no log to be saved.

Here is the new HijackThis log :

Perhaps this is not so much a Malware problem as a crappy (albeit fairly new) HP laptop problem ?? I'd appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Thanks again for your patience

Hi ElRey,

Sorry,

Been a little busy. I apologise for that and I am impressed that you have chased up a reply from me. Pretty unusual for an online forum.
We take our business seriously.. ;)

The Panda online scan returned a "No problems found" so there was no log to be saved.

That's good, but you're saying that the laptop is still painfully slow. I still cannot see any signs of malware in the log.

The entries which were to be fixed with the HJT are still showing, though not malware but just clutter. It might be your security applications interfering with the fix. When they alert you to the changes, you must allow them, not block them, just for this instance. Try having them fixed again with the HijackThis.

===========================================================

Let's also try another scan and see if it will help in any way.

Download ComboFix to your Desktop

Reboot to Safe mode
Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear.
Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter

Double click on combofix.exe
Follow the prompts

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please copy/paste that log in your next reply along with the AVG Anti Spyware log and a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi Elrey,

Still can't see anything malware related. Noticed you have the old Ewido 4.0 which was recently bought by AVG and renamed as AVG Anti Spyware 7.5. You might like to uninstall Ewido 4.0 via the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
