Sometimes, when I click on links in message board posts, and occasionally when I'm using hotmail via the web, the page I'm trying to view gets redirected to the wikipedia http referer page - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Referer
If I click 'back' to try and view the page I was trying to read, it quickly redirects me again to the wikipedia page.

I've run Spybot and Ad-Aware, and also run an Avast virus scan - which brought up a few nasties, so I may or may not have cured the browser redirect problem - but thought I'd ask your advice anyway.

My HJT log:

Hello and welcome to The Malware Removal Forums.

My name is curlylad and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I have to let experts check the content of my fixes before I post them so be patient.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess , simply post back with your query and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions !

Firstly I must apologise for the delay in my reply.
Let's see if we can sort this out for you,
Here's what you need to do

STEP 1

I need you to restore your Hosts file.
Go to http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip and download Hoster
* Unzip it and run then click on "Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts File".
* Close when finished.

STEP 2

* Open HijackThis
* Click 'Do a system scan only'
* Place a check mark next to the following entry highlighted below

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O16 - DPF: {483EB14D-AF1C-4951-81B0-4E2B41829FF6} (QOLCheck Control) - https://www.qwizonline.com/cabs/QOLCheck.ocx

* Click the Fix Checked button.
* Close HijackThis.

STEP 3

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 8 .

Please go to this link to get the update.
Scroll down to and click the link Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8

You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update.

Once you have installed the latest update, please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all older instances of Java listed there.

When you have done that please reboot your system.

STEP 4

Next I need a Start Up list from you

To create a Start Up list please follow this instruction

* Open HijackThis
* Click the 'Config...' button
* Click the 'Misc Tools' button
* Click 'Generate StartupList log'button
* A notepad file now automatically open with the start up list in it

Please now post back here the Start Up List from HijackThis
And a fresh HijackThis log.
Also please tell me if you are experiencing the same problems or any other new ones.

I will review the logs and advise of any further necessary steps as soon as possible.

Now I need you to post me an Uninstall list using HijackThis

To do that follow this instruction

* Open HijackThis
* Click 'Open the Misc Tools section'
* Click 'Open Uninstall Manager'
* Click 'Save list' and choose to save the list to your desktop
* Close HijackThis.

I need to know if you have uninstalled the following 2 programs from your system

1) Symantec/Norton Anti Virus
2) Webroot SpySweeper

If you have please let me know in your next post.

Also can you tell me if you are still experiencing the original problems you described in your first post.
Are you having any other problems - please describe these also in your next post.

Can you now post back all the relevant information I have requested along with the Uninstall list that you saved to your desktop.

Again I will post back as soon as possible with any further instructions.

They both will have been installed on your system at some point.
There are still traces of both evident in your logs but this is not a problem, we can remove the residue of there uninstallation without too much trouble.
If you are no longer using either of these programs on your system, the following instructions will remove their remnants.

Excellent, but we still have a little work to do so please stay with me.

First let's get rid of the remnants of Webroot SpySweeper

* Open HijackThis
* Click 'Do a system scan only'
* Place a check mark next to the following entry

O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

* Now click the 'Fix Checked' button
* Close HijackThis.

Next we will remove the remnants of the Symantec/Norton Anti Virus

We will use the uninstall tool so please click this link http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... 3108162039

When the page opens follow the instructions in Step 1 and Step 2 only please.

You may be instructed to reboot your system more than once, please follow all instructions that are provided.

Finally for now open HijackThis again.

* Generate a fresh HijackThis
* Generate a fresh Uninstall list
* Please post both the logs back here.

I will look at the logs and get back as soon as possible.

Congratulations, good work, your system is now clean. :)

Now that your system is safe we would like you to keep it that way.

Take the time to follow these instructions and it will greatly reduce the risk of further infections and greatly diminish the chances of you having to visit here again.

Step 1 - Microsoft Windows Update

Make sure that you regularly visit the Microsoft Windows Update site
Even better set your system to receive updates automatically.
To do that follow the instructions from this link http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;327838

Step 2 – Create a clean system restore point

Click Start > Control Panel > System > System Restore Tab and click to put a tick in the "Turn off System Restore" check box, then click "Apply". Reboot, then click Start > Control Panel > System > System Restore Tab and click to remove the tick in the "Turn off System Restore" check box, and then click Apply > OK to create a new restore point and then close Control Panel.

Step 3 - Make your Internet Explorer more secure

Open Internet Explorer click Tools > Options > Security tab > Internet icon to highlight > Custom Level, then select the following options:-
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Click OK, then Apply > OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Step 4 - Anti Virus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine and that it is kept up to date.
I notice from your log that you already run an Anti Virus program, well done !
For future reference you could try AVG Anti Virus which is another free Anti Virus.
AVG Anti Virus http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

For more information on anti-virus programs see http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=53#53

Step 5 – Firewall

It is very important that you have a Firewall if you are using the Internet.
For your reference here is the link to another very good free firewall
Kerio http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm

For more information on firewalls see http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=56#56

Hopefully these steps will help keep your computer clean, glad I could be of assistance.

If there are any other questions then feel free to ask or in future do not hesitate to contact us here at The Malware Removal Forums
