First time poster here. I run NIS which includes NAV, Alluria, ewido, and spybot search and destroy.

I can run Alluria at many different times of the day, and still I get:

the best offers network
Dyfuca

repopulating itself despite Alluria saying it has been cleaned. I would surely love this to be gone. Please advise.

Hi,

Alluria a/k/a Aluria Software a/k/a Aluria Spyware Eliminator has a reputation for false positives - see, Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites. I suggest that you not rely upon its findings.

You mentioned two other applications which you have installed and which have excellent reputations. I suggest that you rely upon their findings. If you did not pay for Alluria and wish to uninstall it, let me know and I will post directions.

Right now, your log looks clean, so let's use an online scanner.

• Please perform a BitDefender Online Virus and Malware Scan
  • Click on I Agree.
  • An ActiveX warning box will appear, click on Install.
  • Under Select What You Want To Check For Viruses.
  • Please Check My Computer and Click Ok
  • Now Click On Click Here To Scan
  • Next, Click on Click here to export the scan report
  • Save it to your Desktop.

• Post back with thethe BitDefender log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi,

Looks like there was an infected email on your hard drive that was deleted by BitDefender.
See: http://www.sophos.com/pressoffice/news/ ... horse.html

Your log still looks clean. How is your computer running now?

1. how do i know it is gone?
I see from reading that this is a relatively new trojan out there, and I notice that bic said it Update failed ??

2. at one time i used the free pctools spyware doctor, that I have since removed, but see from the hjt log that it part of it is still there.
C:\Program Files\Spyware Doctor\sdhelp.exe
Can I remove this?

3.Also,
Search and Destroy found this:

--- Search result list ---
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc\Start!=W=2

Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify!=dword:0

Windows Security Center.FirewallDisableNotify: Settings (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify!=dword:0

What does it mean?
thank you

Hi,

I just noticed your question about the registry entries. :oops: I will review those entries and post back.

Hi,

Please do the following.

• Open Notepad and copy and paste the text inside the quotebox in it:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc]
"Start"=dword:00000002

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"FirewallDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

Save this as fix.reg -> choose to save as *all files -> and place it on your desktop.

It should look like this: Image

Double-click on it and, when you are asked if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click YES/OK.

• Reboot your computer.

• Post back and let me know how your computer is running now.

1. Ok, S+D is no longer picking these registry keys up.

But, did you just exclude them from the scan?
I mean wouldnt i want to know it keys are being changed and it has disabled notifying me?

2. Can I now delet the fix thing on the desktop.

3. Upon rebot, the only thing left that anything found is the same cookies that repopulate every restart, those being same as reported before:

BESTOFFERS NETWORK
DYFUCA. INTERNET OPTIMIZER
ELITE MEDIA POPUP

despite removing cookies they return at reboot everytime.

4. Another hjt just to be sure.

Hi,

Yes, you can delete the registry fix from your Desktop. What had changed in your registry was that the Security Center was disabled. Also, what was disabled were Firewall and Anti-Virus alerts if either one was disabled. The registry fix I had you do was to enable Security Center and to enable the alerts if your Firewall and/or Anti-Virus is disabled.

Try deleting those cookies in Safe Mode.
To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times. Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Delete the cookies and then reboot into Normal Mode.

You can then change your settings for cookies.
In Firefox, click Tools -> Options - Privacy tab -> Cookies tab
- Tick "Allow sites to set Cookies"
- Tick "for the originating site only"
- Do not tick "unless I have removed cookies from this site"
- In "Keep Cookies" - select either "ask me every time" or "until I close Firefox" (whichever you prefer)
- Click OK
- When you do accept cookies, choose the option "Session Only"
In Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Explorer -> Privacy tab
- Tick "Override automatic cookie handling"
- Under "First-party Cookies" - tick "Prompt"
- Under "Third-party Cookies - tick "Block"
- Click OK and Apply
Rule of thumb: Don't accept cookies for every site - be selective. You can deny most cookies, and you will be blocked from most of the tracking cookies.

Also, use ATF Cleaner (see below) from time to time to clean out your cookies and temp files.

Your log is still clean. To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

• Install Spywareblaster. SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside pop-ups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software because most of these so-called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

• Let your anti-spyware scanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before scanning.

• I suggest you perform an online virus-scan once in a while (Housecall and/or Bitdefender) because what one virus-scanner can't find, another one maybe can.
Also, make sure that your virus-scanner, the one that is already installed on your system, is always up to date!

• Make sure your windows has the latest updates by going here.

• If you have XP SP2, read here for configuring Security Features for Internet Explorer:

• Also visit this Free Online Scanner for PC Health and Safety.

• More information on how to prevent malware can be found at So how did I get infected in the first place? by Tony Klein and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection.
