Is there something bad in this log? There seems to be an awful lot of stuff that it doesn't look like I need. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 with Antivir, Zonealarm, and Creative's Mediasource program running all of the time. When I run HijackThis should I close programs like MSN and flashget? Thanks for any pointers!

Hi Stern, Welcome to Malware Removal! Sorry about the late response.

Since its been a few days, could you post a new HijackThis log please. If you have programs disabled on startup, please enable them ALL before posting the new HijackThis log.

Also, I would like to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button. It will open a Notepad file.
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

Hi again Stern.

I see you have FlashGet. Is this the unregistered version? If so, I would suggest uninstalling it from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel since the unregistered version serves up Ads in Internet Explorer that are downloaded from Cydoor servers, which is known adware. However, if this is the registered version then it is safe to use.

Apart from FlashGet, I do not see anything else bad in your HijackThis log...lets do some scans.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only!

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main select the following:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

=====

You may wish to Print or Save the following instructions, as the internet will not be available once in Safe Mode!

Can I get rid of ewido afterwards? Or is it a program I have to run manually like Spybot SD or Adaware? I use those 2 programs (and spywareblaster) regularly. Also flashget is the registered version without ads.

I've done the ewido scan, but I can't get Kaspersky online scanner to work. It opens the popup window, I click Accept. Then it waits a while and I click on IE's little bar to allow it to install ActiveX control. Then I wait another 10 seconds and its back to the first window where you have to click 'Accept'. I've done this twice now... doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. Couldn't get it to work with Firefox.

Actually, the site finally came up with error reporting saying I must be using IE and have the security setting to medium. I had custom settings on, so I clicked on default and set the slider to medium. Now after I click 'Accept' the popup window crashes.

Oh, by the way, just to clarify. I haven't actually been having any problems. A friend of mine just advised me that I should get my HijackThis log checked out sometime, so this is what I'm doing here. I'm not suffering of any symptoms I can tell of anyway. I hope I haven't been wasting your time trying to find a specific problem or something :/

Thanks alot!

Please do this:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
=====

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Here is the VundoFix log. It didn't ask me to reboot though, assumedly because it didn't find anything.

VundoFix V6.1.2

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.8

Scan started at 13:32:01 07/09/2006

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

Beginning removal...
