This Unknown Program Has Been Plauging Me :-(

Unread postby HappyDays2006 » August 17th, 2006, 6:51 pm

This program does not seem to have a pattern when I shut down my computer. What happens is when I shutdown my computers sometimes the computer tells me it is trying to end a program.

About 2 weeks ago, I saw a program the computer was shutting down that I did not recognize. This is what the computer told me.....

====================================
End Program -- 6HLXHUUGBW37McRenomkaw24+d...

Ending Program... Please Wait
====================================

I have never seen or installed such a program before. I have two working spyware removal programs: Ad-Aware SE Plus + Spybot SD Search and Destroy. In addition I have a working firewall and antivirus.

I have tried looking in add/remove programs for such a program, no results.
I have tried searching all files in my computer for such a name, no successful results.
I have tried looking in the registry by going to run: regedit. I looked to see if I could find it there, no luck as well.

In summary, this program really has me stumped. The computer occasionally shows it shutting down at random times when I shutdown my computer. However I tried every thing I know to look for it and could not find it.

I would appreciate any help to shed light on this subject.

Hi HappyDays2006,

Welcome to Malware Removal! :)

In order for me to help you, I need to see a HijackThis log.

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the "Select Addition Tasks" dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Copy and paste the log here in your next reply
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also, I would like to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button. It will open a Notepad file.
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

=====

Please post the following:

1) HijackThis log
2) Uninstall list

I have an update to my situation:

I am not sure if this was the spyware plauging my computer or not. Regardless AOL Spyware picked up a spyware.

It is called: MediaMotor

It is classified as a nuisance by AOL spyware remover and AOL Safety and Security Center.
It was found a few minutes ago.

Hi again HappyDays2006,

Good news is that there is no malware showing in either logs provided. Lets run some scans and see what they turn up.

First, your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove...
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0_03
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
=====

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe
Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

=====

You may want to print or save the following instructions as the internet will not be available in Safe Mode!

Please download Ewido to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install Ewido by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch Ewido is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Note: If the Update now option is grayed out, follow the steps below.
      • Click on Update on the toolbar.
      • Under Manual update, click on the Start Update button.
      • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that Ewido is closed before installing the update.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Hi, in response to the help post I recieved.

In response to the SONY VAIO Support.com I do not use that feature, however, I feel I may need it in the future so I want to keep it as an option unless it compromises my security or takes personal information without my knowledge.

======================================
The following contains the Ewido log:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido anti-spyware - Scan Report
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Created at: 10:00:37 PM 8/18/2006

+ Scan result:

Nothing found.

::Report end

=======================================

I have tried using the Kaspersky Antivirus Online however with Internet Explorer I was unable to run it. It would not allow me to click the Kaspersky Online Scanner and allow a popup. I disabled the popup blocker and was still unable to use it.

However when I use firefox to open the scanner is allows me. However at the prompt it tells me I cannot click accept. When I click accept it does nothing.

Therefore I need help on resolving this so I can post a Kaspersky log.

Next, If you want me to post another hijack this log I will do so following your response.

**I do have some questions when I was using the Ewido Program**
From the Analysis Tab in ewido antispyware, then Autostart Tab. I see some programs such as "exShield Protector for Px" which I don't use. Also I don't use Mcafee.com I use Aol SSC a.k.a. AOL safety and Security Center.

Additional questionable Startup programs include OASClnt from McAfee.com and email scan and personal firewall from mcafee.com

May I also ask what ctfmon.exe is? They say they are from microsoft.

Also I would like to get rid of AOL fast start how do I do it?

Thank you very much, sorry for posting so many questions, it just seems to be overwhelming as I still see the original problem of the unknown program.

Update to my previous post:

I am able to run Kaspersky Scanner Online using my AOL browser. For some odd reason it wouldn't work on Internet Explorer, which I find quite odd. If you know the cause please let me know.

I will be posting the Kaspersky log in the next post along with another Hijack this log.

**Before I post the hijack this log I would like to ask, is there anyway I can delete the active x that kaspersky has installed in my computer? I know I needed it to run the scan on my computer, but now that I am done with it is there a way to remove traces of it from my computer?**

Here is the Hijack this log, following it will be an uninstall manager list from hijack this as well:

Hi HappyDays2006,

First, the Kaspersky log is clean. To remove Kaspersky from your computer, go to Add/Remove and uninstall Kaspersky Online Scanner. Remove Viewpoint Media Player also.

- Regarding SONY VAIO Support.com (ZTgServerSwitch), please have a look at some of the google search links here and make an informed choice. Let me know what you decide in your next reply.

- Regarding Kaspersky and Internet Explorer. I think some settings in Internet Explorer may have prevented Kaspersky from running.

- ctfmon.exe is a legit Microsoft file. More information available here

- I'm not 100% sure on how to remove AOL fast start, but in Add/Remove programs, click on AOL Uninstaller (Choose which Products to Remove) and see if it is listed.

- To remove exShield Protector for Px and McAfee, please do the following.

Open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ezShieldProtector for Px] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ezSP_Px.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OASClnt] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\oasclnt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EmailScan] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\antivirus\mcvsescn.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MPFExe] C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\personal firewall\MPfTray.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.0) -

O23 - Service: McAfee McShield (McShield) - McAfee Inc. - C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\ANTIVI~1\mcshield.exe
O23 - Service: McAfee Personal Firewall Service (MpfService) - McAfee Corporation - C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\personal firewall\MPFService.exe

- Check the following entries (below)
- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
Click Fix Checked

===

Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
Click on delete a file on reboot...
Copy and paste the following into the "File name:" text box and then click Open:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ezSP_Px.exe

When you are asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?", click OK.

Your PC MUST reboot to delete the file!

Once rebooted, find and delete the following:

C:\Program Files\mcafee.com << this folder

===

Now...

1) Post a new HijackThis log
2) Tell me what version of McAfee you have?
3) Tell me your decision about support.com
4) Let me know how your computer is.

2) Tell me what version of McAfee you have?
To be honest I am not sure, I use AOL Safety and Security Center which is powered by mcafee.

I hesitated on your last suggestion because when you told me to delete the mcafee.com folder I realized it contained the AOL SSC in it. However I thought what I did with Hijack This would alter the AOL SSC. I am running a full virus and spyware scan and it appears to be working fine.

Upon reading of my new hijack this log it appears the computer kept those files even though I used hijack this to delete them. Perhaps this is a repair mechanism of AOL SSC, if so then it is a legit and up to date program? Unsure on that.

3) Tell me your decision about support.com
I am not too sure on the spyware problem with support.com, however I believe that it is not good to keep a resource hog on the computer that is never used. My decision is to remove it and I ask if there is a systematic way I can remove it first before tweaking the fine details afterwards?

4) Let me know how your computer is.
I am unsure if the unknown program has disappeared for good, I will find out later on and will update my situation with the computer. I still have the feeling that is it lurking. The reason my this has me concerned is because there are several people I know who have the same computer model as me, but they never see that program trying to shut down while their computer shuts down. This is what makes me suspect and what makes me concern.

Thank you very much for your wonderful help and I hope to have this problem resolved :) .

It seems I am unable to use java based programs on Internet Explorer. I am not sure what has caused this.

It may be because I have deleted the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\jusched.exe

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.0) -

Or it may have been because I went to Start, Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections, Internet Options, clicked on program tab and selected reset web settings in addition I have checked "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser."

I am curious to know if this recent change is the cause of my tweaking or could it be caused by an unknown program that slipped in? or is it the program that I have been suspecting all along but could never find in my computer, the one mentioned in my very first post.

I got Sun Java to work by deleting it then reinstalling it.

As for the AOL fast start I tried to exaust all the options avaliable to me, in the end I reinstalled AOL and that appeared to have done the trick.

Hi HappyDays2006,

First off, your HijackThis log is clean. If you still are having problems, we can do some other scans.

In my opinion you should get rid of AOL & McAfee, and get something that is easy to use. My suggestions are AVG for an Anti-Virus and Zone Alarm for a Firewall. If you would like to go this route, please let me know.

3) Tell me your decision about support.com
I am not too sure on the spyware problem with support.com, however I believe that it is not good to keep a resource hog on the computer that is never used. My decision is to remove it and I ask if there is a systematic way I can remove it first before tweaking the fine details afterwards?

The only way to remove support.com is to delete the HijackThis entry, and then delete the file.

So, if you would like to remove support.com, please do the following:

Open HijackThis
- Click the Do a system scan only button
- Check the following entries (below)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

- Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)
Click Fix Checked

Click on the Config button at the bottom
Go to Misc Tools
Click on Delete a file on reboot...
Copy and paste the following into the "File name:" text box and then click Open:

c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

When you are asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?", click OK.

Your PC MUST reboot to delete the file!

The reason why Java was not working with Internet Explorer because ssv.dll had been removed. No instructions were given that would have removed that dll, so I have no knowledge of how and/or why it was removed. Removing the older Java versions and fixing the O4 and O16 HJT entries would not have removed ssv.dll, and by reinstalling Java, the ssv.dll came back.

August 18th shows this entry...
O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08\bin\ssv.dll

August 19th shows this entry...
O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08\bin\ssv.dll (file missing)

Please let me know what you want to do regarding AOL & McAfee, and please give me an update on how things are. :)
