Please help...Java issue

Unread postby mak_20789 » October 14th, 2009, 12:08 am

Hi,
I have installed chartnexus software on my XP SP2. When I try to run it, I get message:

"This programme need JRE 1.5 or above to run."
The problem is, a few months back I had installed another programme during which I used to get msg:

"Unable to start application - java virtual machine cannot be loaded
Class not registered"

At that time I follwed the solution here:

http://hpanswers.blogspot.com/2007/1...tion-java.html

During it, I think I had uninstalled earlier Java on my comp.
So now is there a way I can solve this new problem and run both the softwares ?
What i fear is in earlier issue I was asked to uninstall Java. So if I install it once again, will that conflict with the Microsoft java I downloaded last time?

Thank you.

Unfortunately the link got cut off.
Could you repost it, or if it still gets cut off by the forum software, post it in Quote tags?

Do you have the latest Java installed?
You can check it here: http://www.java.com/en/download/install ... =jre&try=1

Just done a quick Google search and Sun have various web pages where you can test Sun Java:

http://www.java.com/en/download/dt_veri ... _jre=1.6.0

http://www.java.com/en/download/dt_veri ... e=1.6.0_13

http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

The first link tells me: “Oops! You don't have the recommended Java installed.”
The second: “Congratulations! You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 13).” Wrong!
The third: “Your Java is working. Latest Java installed”. (Java 6 Update 16)

Hey ho!

This is a handy site for (double-) checking your Java: http://www.javatester.org

You can also check your (totally unrelated) JavaScript: http://www.javatester.org/javascript.html

@ mak_20789: if you’re using MS Java you might want to check out whether it’s still supported. So far as I’m aware, it isn’t (and therefore could well be considered a security risk).

Maik, it's interesting what you said.

While checking out the official java.com site to reply to the first post, I did a version check myself.
The site told me that I had an outdated version (Version 6 Update 15 instead of the newer Version 6 Update 16)
So I opened my Java, and clicked on Update. It did look for an update, and told me that I had the latest version, which was Update 15.
I then manually updated from Java.com and the new version check told me
Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 16).

Very strange

Think it's a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing - Sun seem to have something of a reputation for it, at least where Java update pages are concerned ;)

Thank you all for your replies.
What I did was I downloaded Java and installed it, and now I have bot MS java and the downloaded one running and its not causing any problems, at least not until now. :)

@Maik: I am runnin g only one software that needs it, and even I dont use that s/w much..very rarely in fact. So do uninstall MS Java if its goin to be a secutity risk?
But I dont see it in my add/remove progs.
Thank you.

Mak: So far as I can recall, not using MS Java has been advised since around 2004 (though I think 'support' only ended this year, after all that). You might want to get more expert advice than I can provide (hint) but googling e.g. 'Microsoft Java' and 'uninstall Microsoft Java' should provide some more info. Sun Java is hardly exploit-free so it's highly recommended to keep that up-to-date. Hope that helps!
