windows will not start up

Unread postby karkalec » November 7th, 2011, 7:09 pm

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 on a Dell XPS 410 Desktop, dual core Pentium 2.4 ghz. Yesterday it started freezing and I got a Windows error message about my Nvidia drivers, then a BSOD. Restarted ok after that. This morning when I attempted to start it up it started but on the bootup screen there were little blue dots all over the normally black background on the initial bootup page, and on the next bootup screen little white exclamation marks all over it. I am also seeing typos in the menus on the screen, "Use!Up/Eown asrows to highlight desired item." for example. Then the bootup froze. I attempted a hard restart and it booted into Startup repair automatically which failed before the screen simply turned grey. Now I can't get it to start at all except in safe mode. I have uninstalled and reinstalled video drivers, also run system file checker from install disc and it found nothing.

Here are my DDS logs:

This appears to be a Win7 hardware issue, rather than malware.
The thread has been moved to the General Computer Support - Hardware room.

Hi karkalec,
This is a Video card or Video driver error, and is indication of a failed attempt to reset the display.
You will need to re-install the new driver, but first you MUST remove all traces of the current driver.
I would suggest using the Guru3D - Driver Sweeper.
You can get from here: http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/
After you Uninstall the present video driver, use the Guru3D - Driver Sweeper to remove all remains of the same driver, before you install the new one.
Once all remains of the old driver are gone, then download and install the fresh copy.

If the above does not work, it is strongly suggestive of a Video Card failure, and the card will need to be replaced.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling current drivers, using Driver Sweeper to remove traces. I have also tried installing and old driver from August. Nothing has helped the symptoms. Anything else I can try to determine whether or not the video card has failed before replacing it? In the device manager it doesn't show any indications that the card is faulty...

karkalec,
If your machine has a discrete video card, take the back/side off the box and make sure the video card is fully inserted in its socket. A lot of mysterious happenings have occurred because the card was loose.

The only other suggestions I have would be to (1)check RAM cards for errors, and (2)check the hard drive.
RAM Test:
Go here : http://www.memtest.org/
download the image, create a boot CD, and use it to boot the machine.
It automatically tests all the RAM with multiple sequences. If it runs a couple hours (or even a half hour) with no errors, the RAM is very likely OK. You do not need a video driver to run this.

Hard Drive Test:
-----------------------------------------
Check hard Drive for Errors
Open Notepad... then copy and paste the following line into Notepad:
(Notepad is in Start, Programs, Accessories)
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

Now Save the NotePad file like this:
  • Click on File from the top menu bar.
  • Select Save As, use Filename: testhd.bat and Save As Type: All Files.
  • Choose Desktop as the location
  • Click Save.
Right click on testhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it. OK the UAC.
A Command Prompt box will pop up, then close after a couple minutes.
Look at the contents of the checkhd.txt file from your desktop.
Look at the last 20 or 30 lines.
You want to see a line reporting zero bad sectors.
You can ignore any reports of errors having to do with bitmaps. Those are known bugs in NTFS reporting.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hard Disk Repair
IF Chkdsk has found any errors having to do with bad sectors in your file system, or if it reports that it cannot continue in Read-Only Mode, it needs to run a different sequence on reboot to do repairs. It can't repair the file system while Windows is running.
DO NOT START THIS SEQUENCE UNLESS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE MACHINE FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. It may not take very long , but could, depending on the number of files and folders.
It will not relinquish control until it is done. You cannot stop it, and it would be a BIG mistake to pull the plug.

  1. Open Notepad... then copy and paste the following into Notepad:
    Code: Select all
    cmd /c chkdsk c: /F
  2. Now Save the NotePad file like this:
    • Click on File from the top menu bar.
    • Select Save As, use Filename: fixhd.bat. and Save As Type: All Files.
    • Choose Desktop as the location
    • Click Save.
  3. Right click on fixhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it.
  4. You will get a message that the volume is locked, with a request to do the repair on Reboot. Answer Y
  5. Click Continue at the UAC prompt.
Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
It will scan again when it boots up and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Once the computer boots up again, please delete your original file Checkhd.txt If it's present on your Desktop.
Right click on testhd.bat on your desktop and select Run As Administrator to run it.
Click Continue at the UAC prompt.
A Command Prompt box will pop up, then close after a couple minutes.

Look at the contents of the new checkhd.txt file from your desktop.
Look at the last 20 or 30 lines.
You want to see a line reporting zero bad sectors.

These few tests are about all I might suggest an individual can do to troubleshoot a random Video error like that.

Just to follow up, you were right that it was the video card. Replaced the card and all is well.

Thanks!

Since this issue has been corrected withb a hardware change, this thread will be closed.
Glad we could help.
