Registry Editing (Scared witless!)

Unread postby six-h » June 25th, 2016, 1:17 pm

What brings me here now is not a Malware infection (I hope!), my problem stems from using a Microsoft software "gismo" called the "Media Creation Tool" it is for the creation of a Bootable USB installation ISO of the new Windows 10 O.S.

I am building an "NUC" machine with the kind help of the Intel Communities Forums, and was advised to download this tool as advised above.
Sadly, it seemed to hang, and when I requested it to STOP, despite acknowledging my request, it again appeared to hang.
and even "deleting" it from Task Manager (I understand that is the Win 8.1 equivalent of Vista's "End task"), it disappeared from the task list, but continued to show it's GUI
My only option then was to do a hard shutdown. :(
On Re-booting I got the message:-
FAILED TO CONNECT TO A WINDOWS SERVICE.

Windows couldn't connect to the Group Policy Client Service.

This problem prevents standard users from signing in.

As an administrative user, you can review the system event log

for details about why the service didn't respond.

The guys on the Intel Forum pointed me at this "solution":- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m5KEmc ... e=youtu.be , but I'm scared of messing up my little used fairly new Medion Erazer X6823 (MD98254)
Can one of your qualified "RegEditors" please, please help me get my lovely machine back to health so that I can upgrade it to "Win 10" before the deadline next month?

The error code you gave me in your PM indicates that your Auto Update or BITS services may be stopped ... https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/959894

Please download Farbar Service Scanner ... by Farbar and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click FSS.exe to run it. (Vista - W8.1 users: Please right click on FSS.exe and select Run As Administrator).
  • Select the following options ....
    • Internet Services
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
  • Press the Scan button.
  • When finished, a text file named FSS.txt will be created on your desktop.
  • Copy/Paste the contents in your reply please.

Grateful for your help Gary,
Just a note of today's "happenings":-
After the "Windows Needs Your Help" message, I clicked on the link on the download page for the registry utility, under "Author:- Tweaking.com" and got the message "Internet Explorer has stopped working"
"A problem caused the programme to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the programme and notify you if a solution is available".

IE Then notified me it had "Recovered the page", ... clicking the link again after that and it worked OK!

Strange things Computers!

Just tried to download updates manually from Control Panel>Windows Update, and it worked normally, albeit a bit slow to connect to their server.
Just installing 15 of 16 important updates (Excluding the "Win10" upgrade).
All installed OK.

Do I still have a problem?
:? Confused.

Try booting your computer a couple of times, and tell me if any of your problems still persist.

Report looks normal (the way it should), and since you've now been able to update that's consistent with things as they now stand.

So, as I said in my last post, reboot your computer a couple of times, and let me know if you're still having problems.

Just re-booted now and had twice re-booted earlier today and on no occasion did I receive the "FAILED TO CONNECT TO A WINDOWS SERVICE" message. :?
How do I know if I still have a problem?
I know that sounds a bit silly, but when I originally had the message above, there were actually two problems.
One was that which was contained in the message, and googling brought me that YT video as a solution, (also advised by the Intel Community).
The second and, to me more debilitating problem was that I could not obtain a "Context Menu" when right clicking ANY Drive, be that internal HDD, SSHD or any drive or flash stick attached by USB.
The result was just a never ending progress gif.
Even a right click on a vacant portion of the desktop was the same.

All this was on May 26th.
I had to just pack it all away as I went on Holiday on 28th and lo and behold, upon first booting after the holiday, "Explorer" seemed to have healed it's self.
My right click Context menu's were back!
but I still had that "FAILED TO CONNECT TO A WINDOWS SERVICE", message which seemed to require a RegEdit.
Now, even that message seems to have evaporated.
However, the fact that Windows Update "required my help" today, despite me having no trouble updating manually!
Totally confused!

Just reading the Farbar Service Scanner report, it mentions Windows Autoupdate Disabled Policy:
On my old Vista PC (Which I am most comfortable with) I know where to change the Update "Rules" and as I always have, it is set to download and advise me, not to auto install.
I cannot recall if I have set the Laptop to do the same, and I have no idea where to find those settings!
Does the above report suggest that it is set the same way as My Vista machine?
If so, Why does it show me that Alarming Full screen request for help!
Should it not just download the updates like Vista and advise me they are ready to install from the System tray?

Ah! Found the WUpdate settings.
It appears that they are set to "Install Automatically" as Recommended.
So I do have some problem since the message I received today requesting help told me it couldn't connect with Windows update servers, I was shown Error Code 80244019.
When I manually requested a search for updates, it was as good as gold, and I installed all except the "W10" update. Installation was successful.
Odd!

Don't worry about the Windows Autoupdate Policy in FSS, that section is blank, which means that the settings within it and the files associated with it are as they would be expected to be.

If you wish to check your update options in Windows 8.1 click on (or run a search for) Settings > Update and Recovery > Choose how updates get installed and make sure that they are as you would wish them to be.

As far as your problems are concerned, I think that what has happened is that your computer was booted with an incomplete update, and that as a result the OS was unstable. When your machine was able to update properly the problem was resolved.

Of course that's just what I believe, based on seeing similar updating problems that I've helped others with, there's no saying for sure whether it was that or something completely unrelated ...... only time will tell.

I'll leave this topic open for a couple of days or so, so if you have any further problems please get back to me. If I haven't heard from you by Thursday I'll assume everything is OK and mark this topic as resolved.

Thank you Gary, Sorry if I've "Cried Wolf", but I've not yet installed "W10" on My new NUC machine, and was wanting to avoid missing the chance totally to upgrade my Laptop.

Maybe now would be a good time to do that?

If there are Reg Keys Missing or corrupted as is the subject of that YT Video, would they be replaced, or a completely new registry written for the upgrade to Windows 10 ?
Grateful for your opinion before I try to "Upgrade to W 10"

Yes, when you update to W10 a complete new Registry is created, which is based on the brand new W10 kernel plus any existing (and W10 compatible) programs that you may have installed on your current installation.

As such, any existing "system" problems should be resolved. However if you had any problems caused by your existing software applications, they may not necessarily be resolved by an update to W10.

In this case, I believe your problems were not caused by any 3rd party programs, so if you wish to upgrade to W10, and it installs OK, then I think it unlikely you will experience a recurrence of the problems you had.
