Multiple Issues Once Removed SpyQuake Spyware Software

Unread postby PAGO12 » May 24th, 2006, 7:53 pm

Last night, I received an icon in my systems tray stating that a Critical Virus has been found on my computer. When I clicked on the icon, it took me to SpyQuake Spyware Software.

After reading some posts in the forum about malware, I realized the viruses where fake and posted by SpyQuake so that I would purchase their software. It also seemed strange that Norton's didn't pick up the virus.

So I followed the instructions utilizing the roguescanfix.exe and smitRem.exe to remove the spyware and fake viruses. Eveything worked like a charm and the critical icon was gone.

ISSUE #1 = I then proceeded to modify some of the settings of the desktop; i.e. wallpaper and sreen saver. That is when I realized I could only change the colors of the desktop wallpaper, and not the provided pics or browsed pics. All options are hazed out. I tried changing this thru the Control Panel => Display, as well as Right Click => Properties off the desktop. I think I may have lost a registry key or something. HELP for not sure what other features have been lost!!!!

ISSUE #2 = I now have in the systems icon tray a icon for "WinAntiVirus 2006 Pro". When I click on it a pop up window shows downloading process but no downloading. Also have a shortcut Icon on the desktop, that when deleted reappears when you reboot. Followed the target locatoin of the desktop icon to "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWA6P_0001_N822M1605NetInstaller.exe" But when I go to delete this file is not there, as well as the WinAntiVirus 2006 Pro software is not in the Add/Remove Files either on the Control Panel.

Followed some helpful advise with downloading the Hijackthis scan software and would like to provide the logs for any help from any one that has an idea to fix these issues.

HERE IS THE HIJACKTHIS LOGS:

First of all, you will need to print out this post and/or save a copy as a text file in Notepad; that way you have a hard copy of these instructions; you can not have IE/Firefox/any browser open during the fix

Please download Ewido Anti Malware, it is a free version of the program.
  1. Install ewido security suite
  2. When installing the program, under "Additonal Options" uncheck...
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  3. Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  4. The program will now open to the main screen.
  5. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files:
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  8. Close Ewido
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Next, please enable viewing of hidden files as follows:
1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:

  • O2 - BHO: Nothing - {f79fd28e-36ee-4989-aa61-9dd8e30a82fa} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpF78E.tmp (file missing)
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWA6P_0001_N822M1605] "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWA6P_0001_N822M1605NetInstaller.exe" -nag
  • O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
  • O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe

You may also optionally check the following entries for removal:
All of the following are UN-needed to run at startup. They can be ran as needed; saving system resources for better uses.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] c:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Start Ewido Anti-Malware
  • Click on scanner. (Note: Do not start any programs or open any windows while Ewido is scanning)
  • Click on Complete System Scan, the scan will now begin.
  • While the scan is in progress you will be promted to clean files, click OK.
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located at the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
  • Click Save Report.
  • Now save the report .txt file to your desktop.
  • Close Ewido

When Ewido is finished scanning; reboot back to normal mode and run this online virus scan: ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send(*NOTE it's perfectly safe to do so..You will NOT be spammed from this)
    - Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If/when you get a notice that Panda wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location like your desktop.

Post
  • The Ewido log
  • A new HijackThis log
  • Panda results
in your next reply here.

PANDA RESULTS
No malicious virus' have been detected. System all clean.

I just looked at the system icon bar and the icons for the WinAntiVirus 2006 PRO is gone, and no desktop icon present either.

No just to retrieve the desktop wallpaper background features. As stated before, wondering if a registry is missing??

Thank You so much for your assistance.

Well you still have all the entries in HijackThis log..did you have IE open when you did the fix with HijackThis?? One entry I did expected to see because you can't remove it with HijackThis..but the others should be gone.

First of all, you will need to print out this post and/or save a copy as a text file in Notepad; that way you have a hard copy of these instructions; you can not have IE/Firefox/any browser open during the fix. <-- VERY IMPORTANT

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:

  • O2 - BHO: Nothing - {f79fd28e-36ee-4989-aa61-9dd8e30a82fa} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpF78E.tmp (file missing)
  • 09 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe
  • O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyGaming\PartyPoker\RunApp.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked".

Open Notepad and start a new file. right click on the text in the quote box below and drag your mouse cursor over all the text, starting with REGEDIT4. Once Hilighted, Rt. click and choose copy. Paste into Notepad and save as "newfix.reg". Again make sure to INCLUDE the quotes in the name. Save it to your desktop

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"NI.UWA6P_0001_N822M1605"=-

Now double click on newfix.reg on the desktop.........reboot and run HijackThis.

Restart your computer and rerun HijackThis. Please post a new HijackThis log in a reply to this thread.

IF after you reboopt you get a warning about a change to the registry make sure to ALLOW the change.

It has been bought to my attention that when you talked about running fixes you ran the OLD smitrem fix..there is a newer more update one; please do the following in addition to the above post.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Help with unzipping files is HERE

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I followed your instructions posted above.

Having a problem with the "newfix.reg" notepad file on my desktop. When double clicked to open it a pop up is received. Pop up states "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Option control panel." Followed your directions by copying and pasting all quote information into a notepad on the desktop with the specified file name. In addition, once rebooted did not receive a warning about a change to the registry.

Including the Hijack this log completed after reboot.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Go ahead and delete the newfix.reg from your desktop..it is no longer need now.

Please download Ewido Anti Malware, it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing the program, under "Additonal Options" uncheck...
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files:
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Close Ewido
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Run Ewido:
  • Once in Safe Mode start Ewido Anti Malware

STILL in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please manually restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Post
  • The Ewido log
  • A new HijackThis log
  • SmitfraudFix report (also found at C:\rapport.txt)
in your next reply here.

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Sorry for the delay in responding but I have followed all the steps outlined from the last reply post.

One thing which I didn't mention earlier that when i reboot in Safe Mode I have two user account options: Admin or User. Previously, all scans were being done on the Admin account and results supplied.

Today, I decided to do the outlined steps for both accounts in Safe Mode, which I will supply the results below.

In addition, the desktop wallpaper feature is working again. THANK YOU!!

Want to say again Thanks so much for all your help. I have been reviewing the past steps and can see all the past removal suggestions have worked.

Let me know if there is anything else you believe I need to do. I am planning on downloading the other suggested free sites once I know the previous reported issues have been removed / corrected.

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Couple of things..the 1st more of a extra precaution step than anything..let's make sure all the baddies are gone from your machine.

Download KillBox http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip.
Place it in a folder on your Desktop.
Help with unzipping files is HERE

In the main screen of Pocket KillBox, go to Tools in the top menu bar, and select: Delete Temp Files. Use the drop down box and clear ALL profiles this way.

Back at the main Killbox screen check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Click the button marked ALL FILES(lower right of Killbox) Left click and drag cursor to highlight ALL files listed in the quote box below, right click and choose copy click. Go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dcomcfg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UWA6P_0001_N822M1605NetInstaller.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\regperf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\simpole.tlb
C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole3.tlb
C:\Documents and Settings\Lisa\Application Data\Install.dat
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\atmclk.exe

If you get a PendingOperations message, ignore/close it and restart your computer manually.

You should also update your Java by following the procedure HERE

As long as there are no further issues not indicated in your logs your system is clean.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
    * CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Restart your computer.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

More info and download is available at link in my signature

Make SURE to read and follow the advise in How Did I Get Infected in the First Place??

Per the last instructions posted, all steps were followed as outlined.

FYI... the link provided to the Killbox download routes to a "Page Can not be Displayed". As a result, I searched the web and found killbox and downloaded it.

Would like to inform you that I was able to paste from the clipboard only the provided quote above to Killbox, but only the first entry C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dcomcfg.exe was entered. So I took the time to enter each of the other statements provided through Killbox -- hopefully it worked.

I have also deleted all Java files / programs and downloaded the updated Jave 5.0 per the link provided.

I have SpywareBlaster already and run it once a week, as well as Spybot S&D. Planning on downloading the other programs that you have recommended.

Thanks Again for everything. If you feel there is something else I should do please let me know.

Sorry about the link to Killbox..it got a period attached at the end therefre the 404 error

Good job on making it work for you

I forgot to mention in the previous post that you should delete the smitrem removal tools you downloaded..Killbox you may keep or delete at your discretion...in either case you should delete the c:\!KillBox folder..it is just backups of files removed and will be re-created if needed in the future.

Stay safe out on the Web and don't hesitate to come back either for help in the future or just for a vist.
