Hi and welcome to the forums, your log which you have submitted here is now in the process of being analyzed, some logs take longer than others depending on the type of infection. As I am currently at undergrad status all my post are verified before final posting so this may also cause a short delay in the final post. Please be patient and I will get back to you as soon as I can

While you are wating for your reply please note...

Do not try and fix any entries that you see yourself (even if they do seem very obvious) If you do so the fix may not work as it should, leaving you open to possible immediate re-infection.

Do not disable your system restore - an infected/corrupted system restore is better than none at all, if anything should go wrong during the fix and restore is turned off then you could well be looking at a full system format. If for any reason you have already disabled your system restore then please enable it again and reboot.

Please do not post in other forums while you are being helped here This is so the HJT helpers at other forums can get on with helping other users that are in need of attention.

If you are at anytime in doubt, or unsure of anything then please ask ! Dont be frightened - we wont bite.... :)

Many Thanks - Dorian - AkA Steve :)

Hi there Chuck

Your computer is in need a little TLC but it is nothing that we can not sort for you. Please make sure that each step is complete before moving on to the next one. May I suggest that you either print out these instructions or save them as a text file with Notepad or your default text editor to your desktop as we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix. If you are having any difficulty understanding or following any part of the instructions then please feel free to enquire so that we can clarify things in more detail.

First of all we need to grab a couple of tools..
Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Download Ccleaner from HERE

1. Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
2. Select your language and click OK, then next.
3. Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
4. Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
Once Done Close ccleaner, do not scan just yet

Now I want you to run exido which I see you already have installed
Open Ewido by clicking on the icon on your desktop (or open it from your start menu)
On the left hand side of the main screen click Update.
Then click on Start Update.

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
Now Close Ewido for the time being, do not scan just yet

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

Unread postby chuck » May 15th, 2006, 2:21 pm

Hi - Thanks for your prompt assistance. I have downloaded SmitfraudFix and Ccleaner and saved them to my desktop. Ewido has been updated. The log from smitfraudfix.cd follows (rapport.txt). I await further instructions. Thanks, Chuck.

Hi there chuck, thanks for the requested log which indicates to me that you have a smitfraud infection in there, now it time to remove the nasties from your computer ....

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

Now double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer", uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Click on "Options" at the top of the window, then click on the "advanced" button.
Deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours". Click on "OK".
Click Run Cleaner to run the program.

Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.

After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit
______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan.
Click on Scanner
Click on Settings
Under How to scan all boxes should be checked
Under Unwanted Software all boxes should be checked
Under What to scan select Scan every file
Click on Ok
Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
Let the program scan the machine.
[/list]If Ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says Perform action on all infections and put a checkmark in the box next to Create encrypted backup, then choose clean and click Ok.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save Report.
Click Save Report button
Save the report to your Desktop
Close Ewido and Reboot in Normal Mode.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Hi there, Can I ask what exactly is the purpose of Acceleration Software, does this incorporate anti virus scanning. The reason I am asking is because I can see norton is active on your system and running two virus checkers can cause software conflicts, I would advise that you choose one anti virus only and un-install or deactivate the other.

Also I must mention incredimail, although not directly malware it is considered to be optional, below are details from a fellow HJT professional which you may find intresting

Although Incredimail is considered to be a legitimate program that people install intentionally, please read this information regarding Incredimail very carefully and use you best judgment in deciding if you want to keep this program on your computer or not.
The use of Incredimail opens your system to attacks, and in the User Agreement, claims permanent ownership of everything sent through their mail service. See the full article. I read this article and noticed the date was 10/10/02 so just in case the information had changed since then and was no longer a concern, I downloaded Incredimail from Incredimail's site. Before installing, I read the EULA and there it was still.

Just one entry to remove with HJT and a couple of files to delete, apart from that your log is looking good

First Lets ensure that all hidden files are set to show
Open the Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - and select the View tab:
Scroll down to where it says "Hidden Files and Folders" section.
Now select the option to "Show hidden files and folders"
Take the tick out of "Hide file extensions for known file types"
Take the tick out of "Hide protected operating system files" Click on OK and Apply
Next Click the "Apply to all Folders" button. Close Windows Explorer.

Download pocket killbox
Download it from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Open HJT by double clicking on the icon and select the second button entitled "do a system scan only".
Make sure you close any windows that are open or minumised

Now select the followng entries by placing a tick in the left hand check box

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winrvc32 - winrvc32.dll (file missing)

Once you have selected all entries then click once on the "fix checked" button to clear the entries from your log

Now close HJT and start Killbox

where it says "Full path of file to delete" I want you to Copy and Paste the whole filename in (including the path) - Do not Type the filename in, or use the "browse for file" facility, make sure that you use copy and paste only - this is becasuse some of the files that need to be deleted can easily be confused with genuine windows files that have very simular sounding names, accidently removing thses files can seriously affect your system.

After pasting each filename into killbox click on the white X in the red circle to delete the file then when the confirmation box shows click on "Yes" now repeat this untill all the files have been entered

If you get a message stating that the "file does not seem to exist" - take note of the filename and move along to the next file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmclk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dcomcfg.exe

Once all these files have been deleted click on the "exit" button to close Killbox

Now generate a fresh log and post it here so I can see that the entry has gone for good

Thanks - Dorian

Hi chuck.

Congrats your log is visually free from an signs of malware. The only thing I will comment on is the use of two virus checkers - AVG and Norton, while this may seem as a good idea it will cause software conflicts within your system. This can affect your computers speed and performance and may possibly cause your computer to freeze, slowdown or even crash. I would disable one or the other. Below is my clean speech, feel free to read through it and ask any questions.

Please advise on any problems you may still have.:-

First lets rehide your System Files

  • ClickStart.
  • Open My Computer.
  • SelectTools menu
  • Click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Uncheck Show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section.
  • Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
  • ClickYes.
  • Click OK

Next lets reset your system restore points please follow these simple steps in order:

  • Turn off System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Clickthe System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Restart your computer

  • Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-clickMy Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click theSystem Restore tab.
  • Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then clickOK.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Make sure you are protected with a known anti-virus checker and a firewall
Windows XP will supply its own firewall but it will only monitor traffic in one direction

Recommended Anti-Virus Programs

There are many antivirus products out there, and at first, with there being so many different products it may look confusuing to you, some are free products and others are fully licienced products. It is up to you which you go for. For free antivirus product I would be looking at either Avast Home edition or AVG Free edition. If you are going to be looking at fully licienced software then I would seriously consider either Nod32 or kaspersky Antivirus products, both are excellent in their job of keeping viruses at bay.

Recommended Firewalls

Firewalls.... A firewall serves as a program that monitors ports, connections and programs, both incomming and outgoing from your computer. Windows does come with its own firewall but unfortunatly it only monitors traffic in one direction. As a result we advise that you install your own independant firewall. Two good firewalls you can choose from (both are free) are Sunbelt Kerio Firewall and also Zonealarm As with the above anti virus packages, both are excellent in their job.

Please note.... only ever install one anti virus product and one firewall, if you try running more than one antivirus on your computer they will conflct and cause problems with each other. Once you have these products installed and on board your computer the next thing is to update your anti virus, this will check for the latest virus definitions so that your anti virus can detect the latest viruses. One you have updated then you should run a full complete scan on your computer, this may take some time but it is highly advisable that you let this finish on its own accord.

Next, if they're not already present, I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (Unlike firewalls and virus checkers you can run more than one application at once, feel free to download ALL of the below if you wish)

  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot is a tool like Ad-Aware SE whereas it seeks out and removes known spyware from your machine. These two tools (Ad-Aware & spybot) are perfect complements to each other as one will most always find something the other missed.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.
  • IE_Spyad - Works by placing known "bad" sites into your Internet Explorer "Restricted Zones" prohibiting them from doing potentially problematic things to your computer.

For added protection you may also like to add a host file, for more information regarding host files read here

Once you have installed and updated any malware solution tools you must remember to update regularly, I would advise at least a manual check of once a week as well as any auto scheduled checks.

Now you have followed my advice - it's time to lodge a complaint against what you have suffered.........

Malware Complaints
If you were infected .... Stand Up and be Counted.

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints, you do not have to be registered to post.. just find your country room and register your complaint.
The infection you had was Spyfalcon/Smitfraud

Register your complaint about malware that has infected you - Stand and shout, let your voice be heard - Let others know how you feel

Take care and happy surfin......
