Hey everyone hope you can help me!!

I received an email from this forum that I joined, and in it there was a file which was really more than a link.... and I clicked on it and it was malware.. this is what the email said:

We have made a small tool for our site, I think you will guess what to do with it....
traffweb.biz/dl/loadadv771.exe

I know the .exe should have been a big clue as to not click on it but I didn't use my brains!!!

I have run antivirus scanner, adware scanners and they did not pick up anything hope you can pick something up....

My hijack this log:

Hi Ricky,

I'd be happy to help you with your problem.

While I research your log, maybe you could provide some description of what you are seeing that is making you suspect malware (eg. popups, hijacked homepage, etc). As many details as possible will help.

Hey there,

Thanks for getting back to me, the email I received was from a forum I joined called nursesnetwork.
I received the email 4 days ago and clicked on the .exe file, I didn't log onto nursesnetwork forum untill yesturday and thats when my pc just crashed, there was a little window that opened for command script or something, and it also downloaded a wmf file.

I restored my computer as its new and I didn't have anything important on it, logged on to the website and it did it again

After posting here, I cleaned out all the computer, now the wmf file doesnt load up neither does the little window, its only when I go to the nurses network fourm, you know at the bottom of the screen as its going from one screen to another traffweb.bix/dl/loadadv771.php flashes up and then changes page.

My norton firewall also flashes up with a message about an attck from ip 85.249.23.119 everytime I visit nursesnetwork

This is my new hijack this log::

Hi ricky,

Please observe the following rules while we work:
1. Please read my instructions before you begin. If you find something you don't understand, come back here and ask!
2. Should you have problems downloading any of the files I've mentioned, come back and I will give you an alternate link.
3. Please reply in this thread. Do not start a new topic.
4. Please, let's decide together when your computer is clean. You can tell if it is acting right, but some serious malware problems don't have many operational symptoms.

HijackThis logs take awhile to research, please be patient. I know that you want your problems solved quicky, and I will work hard to help you.

The instructions I am posting are specifically designed to address to your current situtation, and should not be applied to any other situtation.

You might seriously consider avoiding that forum and ignore emails from there.

Microsoft has a fix for the "wmf exploit" as of mid January. Please visit http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us and get your OS updated.

General comments are done. The real instructions start here.

(Note: As you already have Ewido installed, downloading should not be necessary, just update it. Start with step 3.)
Download and install Ewido Security Suite Trial from here.
1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful'.
8. Exit Ewido.
Do not scan with it yet.
(If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/ to update manually.)

------

Note: You may want to print the following instructions.
Going to SAFE MODE
If you would like a complete discription, see here.

Reboot your computer
As soon as it starts to boot, rapidly press the f8 key. If this should get past you (as it is wont to do) just reboot, and try again.
Select Safe Mode from the menu.

Entering SAFE MODE
==========

  • Please run Ewido.
  • Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Settings
    • Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
    • Under "What to scan" select scan every file
    • Click OK
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine (It will take a while, get some coffee.)
  • Let it remove anything it finds.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
  • Exit ewido

Reboot

Exiting SAFE MODE

Run an online virus scan called Kapersky from here.

1. Click on Kapersky Online Scanner
2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on Accept. After reading the contents.
3. Now Kapersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
4. Click on Next">[b]Scan Settings, and make sure the database is set to extended. And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
5. Then click on My Computer. And the scan will start. (More coffee)
6. Once finished, save a log as .txt file to the desktop. And restart again.

Post the logs from Ewido and Kaspersky, and post another HJT log.

Hey,

Have done what you asked.. Kapersky didn't give me the option to save a log but I copied and pasted this below:

The scan is complete.
No malware has been detected. The sections that have been scanned are CLEAN.

Report is empty.
Please note: The free Kaspersky On-line Scanner does not provide comprehensive protection and cannot prevent future infections. It only detects malware that has already penetrated your storage devices. We strongly recommend that you use a fully-functional antivirus solution to protect your computer at all times.

Please wait, this process may take a long time depending on the selected target. If you want to continue browsing, open a new window.

Hi Ricky,

Those 2 scans are very good at finding what's wrong. When was the last time you visited windows update prior to this incident? Are you having symptoms while browsing other sites, or just while you are at nursesnetwork? Again, I'd stay away from there, and suggest recommending to other people you know they stay away also.

Here's another scan I'd like you to run.

Download and run WinPFind

Follow the instructions on the bleepingcomputer website to download, extract and run WinPFind:
Pfind is a program that scans common locations on your hard drive for files that match certain patterns known to be used by malware. It will also provide exports of certain registry keys that are used by various malware.

Usage Instructions: Download WinPFind.zip and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called C:\WinPFind. Inside c:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

When it is done, it will show the results of the scan. Click on the Copy to Clipboard button and then paste the contents of the log in your clipboard as a reply to where you are receiving help.

Note: It is important to note that not all files found with this program are necessarily bad. Please use extreme caution when deleting these files as it may cause problems with applications running on your machine.

It will save a document in the folder from which it is run called WinPFind.txt. I will need this log and another HJT log.

Hi Pollux.Castor,

Thanks alot for your help in getting this fixed, much appreciated.

I honestly can't remember when I last updated Windows prior to this, I have automatic updates setup so would just leave for that to update automatically..

But I have just done what you asked.. I am doing the scan - and I just got a message! It says is Cannot open file C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/QSLLPSVCShare. And then there is an ok button.
I press Ok and it stops dong anything..

so I have just copied it and it placed below:
WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi Ricky,

For the most part your logs look clean. In January Mircosoft created a fix for the wmf exploit. Since you have had updates on auto, that should not be a problem.

I do have some concern about this:
C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/QSLLPSVCShare
In my searching, I have found several instances where WinPFind had the same trouble that you experienced. They tried to do some investigating and didn't get anywhere. I have a few things I'd like you to do.

First, let's get Hijackthis off the desktop. Create a folder in Program files called Hijackthis. Then move Hijackthis.exe from the desktop to the folder you just created.

Second, click Start >> Run..., in the window that appears copy and paste the following (Note: It's one line, copy it all):
Code: Select all
dir /AHS C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/QSLLPSVCShare>c:\Program Files\HijackThis\QSL.txt

Then click Ok.

Third, Start Windows Explorer.
Click the tools menu >> Folder Options... >> View tab.
Select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended)
Click Yes to confirm.
Click Ok.

If the following file is not a folder - Please submit C:/Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/QSLLPSVCShare to Jotti and post the results here.
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy the filename (include full path), then hit Submit.
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Copy the result and post it here in this thread.

Also post the contents of c:\Program Files\HijackThis\QSL.txt, it should be a DOS directory listing.

Hey,

I was able to move hijackthis to program files, but the command that I had to paste in run brought up this error message:

"Windows cannot find 'dir'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search"

I scanned the file through Jotti and below are the results, but the .txt file in Hijack this wasn't there, I did unhide al the folders...

Hi Ricky,

The directory listing I was trying to get, I forgot quote marks around the filenames (needed since they include spaces in the name). Jotti didn't find anything with the file, I'm not going to worry anymore. I don't need the listings.

Do you still seem to be having trouble? Any thing out of the ordinary?
If yes, let me know, otherwise...
Your log looks clean, let's work on keeping it that way. (Let me know either way so we can archive this If we're done.)

As you have the Norton Antivirus and firewall installed, the corresponding installation instructions (below) are included for informational purposes.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you are still having:

Clear old restore points - first Disable System Restore
Right click My Computer >> Properties >> Performance Tab
Then press Alt-F then click the Troubleshooting Tab.
Check Disable System Restore
Click Ok
Click Ok (again)
Reboot

Then enable system restore
Right click My Computer >> Properties >> Performance Tab
Then press Alt-F then click the Troubleshooting Tab.
Uncheck Disable System Restore
Click Ok
Click Ok (again)
Reboot

Start Windows Explorer.
Click the tools menu >> Folder Options... >> View tab.
Uncheck Show hidden files and folders
Check Hide protected operating system files (recommended)
Note: This will return the item to Windows default. I consider the hidden file extensions a security risk, and recommend that it be Unchecked.
Your choice here...
Check Hide file extensions for known file types

Click Ok.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the OK button to apply the changes and exit the Internet Properties page.
  2. Use Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs (select and use only one):
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  5. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  6. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found above:
  7. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  8. Update Java - Download and install the newest version from here.
Then go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs.
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
Click that entry and then click on the Uninstall button.
  9. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Please also read Tony Klein's excellent article: So how did I get infected in the first place?

This is always a good read.
