Unread postby Southpaw » April 17th, 2006, 6:26 pm

Hi

I've done an AVG scan and I have exploit.exe

AVG doesn't heal or cage it. It doesn't do anything with it.

How can I get rid of it?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Malware removal forums. I will be more than happy to help you work on your problems. Please give me some time to review your log as this can be a lengthy process. I will be back with you as soon as I can. As I am an undergrad my answers will be checked by an expert before I post back.

In the meantime
The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.

Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.

Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan select My Computer

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Lets try this one.

Panda
Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
- A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your Valid Email
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
- Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
- Post Panda scan results in your next reply

Print these out or save them as a .txt document to your desktop as we will be going into safe mode and this page will not be viewable.

open AVG ->> Click Service Tab->> Event History Log. Click the Export Log button and save it to your Desktop as History.txt If you can help it dont save it as XML file. Kinda messy to read. ;) Copy/paste the contents of the log into your reply

I see you have ewido. Lets try a scan with it. If it's still on your system just run the update and move on to safe mode tutorial. If not start at redownloading it.
Ewido
Download Ewido

Install ewido
During the installation, uncheck the following under Additional Options:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed,
exit ewido.
Do Not Use It Yet.

Safe mode:
Please reboot to safe mode:
After the very first black screen start tapping the
F8 key untill prompted with a list choose safe
mode.

Ewido Part 2
Ewido
Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
Click on scanner
Click on Settings
Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
Under "What to scan" select scan every file
Click OK
Click on Complete system scan
Let the program scan the machine
If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. NOTE: You may choose to select this for all files found.
Remove anything it finds
When scan is completed, click Save report to your desktop.
Post the report in your next reply.
Exit ewido.

Reboot normally

Please post a new HJT log along with the Ewido log and History.txt

Does it look clear?
All the scans seem to be coming back all clear.

The original AVG scan definately said it could not delete Exploit.exe

But now nothing seems to be picking it up??

Im sorry your not quite clean yet. :( But we are getting there.

******************************************
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Search for and remove
Now I want you to search for and delete the following file if present. If you need help finding them.
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.
Please just remove the files I listed in BOLD

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\WinadX.inf
C:\PROGRAM FILES\eMedia Codec << this entire folder and all it's contents.

Clean up!
Download ccleaner
Install this tool.

Open
.when it first opens go to
options..Slide the bar to Thourough.
then if you do not want to type in passwords for sites and such again
uncheck delete cookies.also
uncheck news group subscriptions if you use news groups. If your not sure what that is you probably don't use them.
check fully erase ( wipe clean.)
press OKthen
Cleanup!

Reboot the computer now normaly.

Please run another scan from Panda.

Along with another hijackthis log.

What were you doing exactly when you recievd an alert for AVG about Exploit.. were you:
downloading something?
Visiting a site?
Opening E mail ?

I was on a forum and when I clicked on a page I got the warning that a threat had been found.

I clicked delete and it said it could not delete. So i did a scan and got the same message.

Download RegSrch.zip from here:

http://billsway.com/vbspage/vbsfiles/RegSrch.zip

Create a folder called regsearch and Unzip that file to there and then double-click on the regsrch.vbs file. When it runs it will prompt you for a string to search for. Enter wupd into that field and press enter.

It will run for a while silently and then create a report.
Please paste the contents of that report into a reply to this topic.

If any software warns you about this program just allow it to run. It's safe.

Still being able to see all files and folders:

Search for and remove
Now I want you to search for and delete the following file if present. If you need help finding them.
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.
Please just remove the files I listed in BOLD

Before deleting this folder let me know if anything is in it. DO NOT click on anything in it just let me know if anything is in it.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\1024 [b]

There are still some nasties in your cookies.

Adaware

Download Adaware
It will ask you during the install if you want to run and update now. Select both those boxes.

Once it's updated run a full scan and remove anything it finds. You may choose not to delete MRU objects..there safe.

Post the contents of the reg search in your next reply.

You stated:

But now nothing seems to be picking it up??

Does this include AVG ?
