svchost.exe error

Unread postby Rich » April 17th, 2005, 11:51 am

I had some problems (mainly Elite Toolbar takeover) for which I ran Avast antivirus, Spybot, Ad Aware, Registry cleaners, and Spyware Doctor (the one that fixed it). I also took some advice from another forum and deleted a number of host files and reverted to windows default.

Since then, anytime I restart my computer I get this error box:

"svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created."

What does this mean, where do I find the error log, and how do I fix it?

Here is my Hijack This log:

Please help.

Thanks, Rich

Hi Rich, welcome to Malware Removal!

I'm 'KotaGuy, and I will be helping you with your HijackThis log.

You may want to print my instructions out for reference during the fix.

I'd like you to do a few online scans. Please do scans from Panda ActiveScan, TrendMicro HouseCall, and eTrust AntiVirus WebScanner. Also do an online Trojan scan from Windows Security.

Let them fix anything they find, rebooting your computer between each scan. Please note, and let me know about, anything they cannot fix, preferably full pathname if possible.

Visit this page
for proper configuration of Ad-Aware and Spybot. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

Once you've done that, run and scan with HijackThis, and post the new log please.

OK The Panda software wouldn't delete or fix C:\WINNT\System 32\bs?.dll

I did a search on it but only found bss.dll

I did the rest and still get the error box after rebooting.

Not seeing anything really bad in your log. That error message you are getting is indicative of a Blaster infection though.

Download and run Stinger.

Apply the Microsoft patch for the Blaster worm. I also recommend updating to the latest Service Pack and installing whatever
other security patches may be available to you.

After running Stinger and applying the MS patches and Service Pack, let me know if you are still getting the error.
