Trojan?

Unread postby dannyh » March 8th, 2006, 9:03 am

Looking for assistance with a problem I have ran into recently. After noting some odd browser behaviour I noticed an icon on my C drive of what looks like a vampire. The file was ZDJ.exe. After halting the program in Task Manager I manually deleted the file. On researching this file I found it was also assocated with a file called lich.exe. The spyware programs I have on my machine did not pick this up, so rightly or wrongly I again manually deleted the file.
I just ran a- squared with no results, on running hijack this though there appears to be a reference remaining to lich.exe. Would be grateful for any assistance you can give.

dannyh,
lich.exe appears to be a new variant file, associated with the purveyors of SpyAxe. What we will do here is perform a SpyAxe removal, then look see what is left. We will get rid of the red clients app hijacker and delete a few other things along the way. When you come back, tell me if this computer is a Compaq or a Dell.

You may want to print this out or save it to a Notepad file on your desktop, as you will not have Internet access in Safe mode.
This is fairly long due to a difficult infection, and your persistence is needed to be successful.
You should find it fairly straightforward, however.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of system folders is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on All files and folders on the left pane, click on the More advanced options at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please download, install, and update the free trial version of Ewido trojan scanner: from here : http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
There is an unofficial set of instructions in pdf format here : http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/ewidoQuickGuide.pdf
* Install ewido security suite
* When installing, under "Additional Options", Uncheck "Install background guard" and Uncheck "Install scan via context menu".
* Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop. Double-click it.
* The program will go to its main screen
* On the left hand side of the main screen click Update.
* Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can also use the same download link http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ to manually update ewido.
Don't Run Ewido Yet. We will run it later in Safe Mode.
------------------------------------------------------------
Go to : http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com, scroll down the page to SmitRem.exe. Download and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to its own folder on the desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and install CCleaner from here.
Don't run CCleaner yet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Additional Info is here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner.
( Do not use the Issues block )
Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything Except Autocomplete Form History, and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
------------------------------------------------------------
Open the SmitRem folder and double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
If you think it's not doing anything, check the hard disk light.
Wait for it to finish.
The tool will create a log named Smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C:\ or partition where your operating system is installed.
Please post that log along with the others requested in your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run Ewido Scan
Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have Nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!.
It's extremely important not to open any windows while the scan is in progress.
Now Run Ewido
* Click on scanner
* Click on Settings
* Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
* Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
* Under "What to scan" select scan every file
* Click OK
* Click on Complete system scan
* Let the program scan the machine
* If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification.
* Let it fix whatever it finds
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
* Click Save report
* Save the report to your desktop
* Exit ewido
When you compose your reply, paste the contents of the report into it..
------------------------------------------------------------
Remove Log Items with HJT
Run HJT again, click "Do A System Scan Only", and check the boxes next to the following ones that exist :

MAKE CERTAIN ALL OTHER WINDOWS and BROWSERS ARE CLOSED and click "Fix Checked"

-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to these files. Use Find (F3) or Start, Search if the folder is not shown; then Delete these files, if present:
C:\Windows\Prefetch\all files <== don't delete the prefetch folder, just everything in it.
C:\Windows\System32\lich.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvctrl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe
C:\Windows\System32\hpDC17.tmp
<=== this one may morph. Delete any .tmp file in this folder starting with hp----.
msvol.tlb
ld*.tmp
<== you can use ld*.tmp in the search. delete any file that matches.
ncompat.tlb
mscornet.exe

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the filename is in there, click End Process, then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reboot to Normal Mode now.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Right-click a space on your Desktop, choose Properties, Customize, Web tab. Uncheck Security Info if present.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run an Online scan.
Go tohttp://www.trendmicro.com and click Personal. Under Trend Micro Housecall (upper right) Click Scan now.
Click Scan Now It's Free. Choose your location, then Start Free Scan Now. Select Complete Scan. If it asks about installing an ActiveX control, allow it. It'll take a few minutes to download, especially with a dialup connection, so be patient.
Check to Clean all drives and Scan.
When it completes, copy the full name of any virus, trojan, or spyware that cannot be cleaned or deleted and post them along with your next log.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download this file from the link to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'
Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyad, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford.
For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items.
For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the Ewido log, and SmitFiles.txt.

Thanks for your help. Carried out instructions, though could not get the Trend Micro Housecall to work. It downloaded the active x but just kept crashing. Anyway, logs as requested:

dannyh,
Your log looks clean. Nice work..
I would go into HJT, do a scan only, and Check, then Fix Checked this line:
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in Trusted Zone, should be Internet Zone
Make sure only HJT is open when you hit "Fix Checked".

How is the machine running? If it looks good to you also, I would add a few safety features:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. It also provides selective cookie management.
