Hello David,

I think we will hold off on the disable/enable system restore for just a bit.

I would like you to do two more scans (both quick and painless), as it appears that we need to dig a little bit more deeply into what's going on inside of your machine. First:

Please print out theseinstructions as you should have all open windows and programs closed when running the scan. Thanks dobhar for the canned.

Step 1.
==========

- Please download F-Secure's trial Blacklight from here
- Print out the help page for guidance. It will be found here
- Click the "I Accept" button at the the license agreement
- Click the "Download" button to start the download
- Save it to your Desktop

Step 2.
==========

- Double-click the blbeta.exe file on your Desktop
- Select the "I Accept the agreement" at the license agreement, then click "Next"
- Make sure "Scan through Windows Explorer (Recommended)" is selected\checked
- Make sure all open programs and windows are closed (including this IE window) before clicking the "Scan" button
- Click "Scan
- When the animated graphics, in the bottom right-hand corner, disappears, click "Next"
- A text log file will appear on your Desktop when the scan is complete. It will start with fsbl-xxxxxx.txt (ie: fsbl-20051017165931.log)
- Paste the contents of that log back here.

Next:

Post a startuplist please.
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click Config button
  • Click Misc Tools
  • Check both boxes next to Generate StartupList log
  • Click Generate Startuplist Log button.
In your next reply, please include:
1. The results from the Blacklight scan.
2. The Startup List generated by HijackThis.

Once again, I thank you for your patience. Problems such as this one (inability to connect to certain sites), are always more difficult to correct simply because they are basically intermittent in nature.

Hello Spot Check Billy.

Below you will find the requested logs.

When I ran F-Secure trial backlight there was no option to SCAN THROUGH WINDOWS EXPLORER. I checked carefully and even installed the program a second time. Same result. No option. I had printed all the instructions prior to running and the example clearly shows the option button but it did not appear on my copy.
I have included the test results anyway.

I have also included the file Hijack this log Startup progs and a normal scan as well. I hope this helps.
Unfortunately I don't know how to change Line 17 to http://www.aol.com as you suggested. It still reads 10.0.0.2.

Here are the 3 logs.

Thank you for your support,

David

Hello David,

Thank you for the logs. We have eliminated quite a few causalities for your link connection problems. You are doing good work so far. 8) The F-Secure Blacklight is clean, which is definitely good news. I'm going through your HijackThis Startup List right now, but one thing jumped out at me as a possible problem. It looks like your Windows XP firewall is still running. This often causes conflicts as well as other problems. You can disable it by doing the following:

Turn off Xp sp2 Firewall:
  • Click Start=>Control Panel
  • Double-Click Security Center icon
  • Under Manage Security Settings for: header
  • Click Windows Firewall
  • Select (place a mark in) Off
  • Click OK
  • Close Security Center window
  • Exit Control Panel
it also appears that you have installed a second antivirus software product. These programs very seldom get along well together and running more than one AV product can actually cause loss of protection. You should really choose one and uninstall the other.

Regarding the O17 entry. You cannot change this. Any attempt to do so will probably result in loss of connection to the Internet. The IP address showing in that entry 10.0.0.2 is most likely the internal address of your router. Unless there is some specific reason to do so, please do not fix this entry or attempt to change it.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click Tools=>Settings.
  • In the left pane Click Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options Uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection
  • Uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • Click Save button.
  • Close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right Click the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar.
  • Select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

We also need to disable Ewido real time protection as it may interfere with the fixes.

From the system tray:
1. Right-click the system tray icon
2. Uncheck real time protection.
OR
From within Ewido:
1. Under 'Your security status',
2. Deactivate it by clicking 'real time protection' until the status says 'inactive

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MyWebSearch

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {00A6FAF6-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\6.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL

O2 - BHO: MyWebSearch Search Assistant BHO - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\SrchAstt\6.bin\MWSSRCAS.DLL
O2 - BHO: mwsBar BHO - {07B18EA1-A523-4961-B6BB-170DE4475CCA} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\6.bin\MWSBAR.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [My Web Search Bar] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\6.bin\MWSBAR.DLL,S
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\6.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\6.bin\mwsoemon.exe

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredi ... jhtml?p=ZU

With all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

From "Safe Mode", (Reboot if necessary.) locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you're able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

To show hidden files :

1. Click Start=>Control Panel=>Folder Options=>View tab.
2. Select "Show hidden files and folders"
3. Clear the check mark in "Hide protected operating system files"=>Yes[/color] to confirm.
4. Click Apply=>OK.
5. Close Control Panel.

folders...

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1

Note that some of these file(s) may not be present.

I'll reply back with any findings in reference to your HijackThis Startup List as soon as I can.

Update: I have finished analyzing your Startup List (and conmfirmed with 'kotaguy, an expert here at MRU), that it is clean. I await your response eagerly.

Hello Spot Check Billy,
First. Let me apologise for the delay in responding. I was out of town for a couple of days but I'm back.

I am delighted that my Logs now seem to be clear. Great. Thank you.

I followed your advice to the letter and here is what happened:-

I switched off XP2 SP2 Firewall. No problem
Could you advise which AV to keep. One of my main concerns was to contact Mcafee to download my AV

I now understand about 017. Thank you. I will not try to alter this.

I have disabled Microsoft Anti spyware. No problem.

Is it time to activate them again?

I have disabled Ewido Real time Protection also.

I went to Add/remove progs. and My Web Search was removed.

I ran Hijack This and looked for the ones you said might be listed but they were not present.

Rebooted to Safe mode but the the first of the two progs. listed was there and I deleted it. The second. C:\PROGRA~1\Mywebs~1 was not present (Or at least I could not find it in Woindows explorer).

The final result is that I still do not seem to be able to access any of the sights mentioned (ie. Microsoft, Mcafee, Ebay, Whatis, Etc. etc.) through either Firefox or I.E>0

I have managed to get I.E. back by reinstalling SP2 for XP Home. bit I still have not get Help & Support from the start menu. The message I get is "Windows cannot open Help and Support because a system is not running.
To fix this problem stasret the program Help & Support"

I am not at all sure how to do this.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your excellent help and support but perhaps my problem is not related to a Virus and it is something completely different.

Hello David,

Welcome back. 8)

OK, I don't really know much about eScan AV products, other than that it is reputable software. I know a lot of people that use AVG in either the free or the pay for version and they are very happy with it. What you can try is disabling one but not uninstalling it, use the other one for awhile and see how you like it, then switch them. The best recommendation is to use the one that you feel the most comfortable with. Personally, I have never used either of those products, so I can't say which one I would keep. I'm the black sheep of my family. Everyone else uses AVG, but I use the NOD32 system.

Next, about the firewalls. It's good that you have disabled the XP firewall because it definitely causes problems with other software firewalls. I have never used the McAfee firewall so I can't really make recommendation's there. It shouldn't be causing any problems, but you might try temporarily disabling it and see if you can then link to Microsoft, etc.. If you still cannot, just reenable it.

You can go ahead and switch the Microsoft Antispyware and ewido back on.

Don't worry about not being able to find those entries/files. There are some programs that actually clean up after themselves when they uninstall.

I think we are pretty safe in saying that your difficulties are not caused by malware of any sort. I'm going to consult with some other folks here at MWR to see what they have to say about it. I may end up directing you to another site that deals exclusively with this sort of problem. One way or the other, we'll get you fixed up.

I'll be back as soon as possible.

Hello David,

Please try the following: Install the ]MVPS Hosts file => The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

If that doesn't help I would recommend that you go to one of these forums which specialize in troubleshooting: (Let them know the steps that you took and that you were referred to them from MWR.)

Register, then run the full battery of tests at: PCPitstop, then post at:
Networking, Email, and Internet Connections, or User to User Help

CastleCops:
Browsers

Tom Coyote's:
Other Computer Problems

Sorry that we could not be of any further help. :(

Keep me posted as to how you get on.

Hi Spot Check Billy,

I just wanted to thank you VERY much for all your help and support up to now.

I am following your suggestions and I will report on the results when the situation is finally resolved.

I fully realise that the problem lies elsewhere than a virus but it is good to know that my computer is now free of viruses.

Thank you,

David
