winxxxx.tmp.exe, win*.tmp.exe, runaway temp folder

Unread postby s_oetting » February 24th, 2006, 5:13 pm

Hello.
My computer is constantly generating files in the temp folder. They are named winxxxx.tmp where x is an integer which increments by one each time it makes a new file. It is producing these files at a rate of 6-7 of them every 1-2 minutes. One out of every 20 or so of these files is named winxxxx.tmp.exe, which will then run, and attempt to make Internet Exploder download a file called xxx.wmf. I have removed execute permissions from the temp folder, and that has stopped them from running. I have norton antivirus installed 2003, and it does not find anything in a full system scan. I have run an online scan from housecall.trendmicro, and it found Win32.SilentCaller.V and removed it, but the problem did not stop. Ad-aware has run, and removed everything it found, but the problem persists.

I have run hijackthis and generated a log. I ran it with windows in full startup mode, without anything disabled via msconfig (fwiw, even with a diagnostic startup in safe mode, the problem is still there). Please note that winxxxx.tmp.exe will not show up in the log as the above mentioned process stops it from loading.

Please help me. Thank you.
