cool web search

Unread postby redchango » April 8th, 2005, 2:10 am

alright, so i got what appears to be a cool web search. in my add/delete programs I have something called search extender and shoppin wizard, which both lead to a website that asks to download some program, which i haven't done. i have microsoft antispyware, and this continually tells me that something is at least attempting to change my homepage on IE. I use foxfire now to avoid this and any other problems/popups which might appear when on the Internet.
Going off another's web log, I alreadydownloaded cwshredder and about:buster. cwshredder found nothing, and about:buster deleted certain keys. when i attempted to log onto trendmicro and use their anti-virus scanner, my comp froze. i also understand that some of the numbers from my hijack this log are most likely random.
here is my hjt log:

Hey red,

Welcome to Malware Removal

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later.

Download this file and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Then, Download Ad-aware Second Edition here and install it. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.

We'll need to unload (not uninstall) Intermute's SpySubtract, since it might interfere with other program(s) we might be using to 'clean' off your system.

Open adaware and Click the "Check for updates now" line on the main screen. CLick the "Connect" button on the webupdate screen.

If an update is available download it and install it. Click the "Finish" button to go back to the main screen.

Click on the "Settings" button (gear symbol in the upper right corner of the main status screen) in the quick launch toolbar to open the General settings screen. Check the "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal" setting and then click "Proceed" to save your changes

Click the "Scan now" button in the main menu on the left side of the main status screen or use the "Start" button in lower right corner. This will open the Preparing System Scan screen. Please deselect "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat. Then select "Use custom scanning options" and click "CUstomize". This will open the "Scan Settings Page. Make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan within archives
Scan active processes
Scan Registry
Deep-scan Registry
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs
Scan my Hosts File

Then click on the "Tweak" Button to open up the tweak settings.

Open up the Scanning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Make sure the following is unchecked with a "red" X:

Unload recognized processes & modules during scan.

Open up the Cleaning Engine section and make sure all of the following are On with a "green" checkmark:

Always try to unload modules before deletion
During Removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.

Click the "Proceed" button to save settings.

Don't scan yet. We will do it in safe mode.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called

Network Security Service C:\WINNT\mfciz.exe

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

While in safe mode, double click on the cwsserviceemove.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

Then Open cwshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

Go to add/remove oprograms (vis control panel) Remove if present the following:

WeatherBug (or similair)
Wild Tangent

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

gnsrp.dll
d3zm.dll
mfcgy32.exe
mswsock.exe

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Now navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. Post the log file in your next reply.

Scan with Adaware by opening it and clicking the "Next" button to start the scan.

When the scan is completed the Performing System Scan screen will change name to "Scan Complete".

Click the "Next" button to get to the Scanning Results screens where more information about the objects detected during the scan is available.

Click the Critical Objects Tab. In general all of the items listed will be bad. Be carefull with the Hosts file entries. Malware uses the hosts file to redirect you websites. However you can use the hosts file as a way to prevent malware. If the object has 127.0.0.1 in it, it should most likely not be deleted as it is protecting against unwanted sites. For more information on how to use a host file to protect yourself read here. So in short, you may or may not want to fix the hosts file entries.

To fix all the bad critical objects do the following:

Right click on one of them to open up the selection screen. Click the "Select All" button to select all entries. In general all should be selected with the exception of the good hosts file entries.

When all are selected Click "Next" and then "OK" in the pop-up window to confirm the removal.

Now reboot, and run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log. :)

Hey red,

Copy the following to a notepad file

First of all I need you to download some programs for use later.

Download this file and unzip it to your desktop

Download About:Buster from here. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder from here, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Then, Download Ad-aware Second Edition here and install it. If you already have Ad-aware Second Edition skip to the next step.

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;

  • Click OK.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please also Disable SpySubtract for this fix

Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok

Scroll down and find the service called

Remote Procedure Call.

Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

sysjd.exe
sdkqo.exe

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

gnsrp.dll
ielu32.dll
sdkqo.exe

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-glx-2

Here's my latest hijack this log followed by an about:buster log. Do you work off a template and then copy and paste it as a reply?

Also, AdAware detected malware called VX2 on a system file, but it won't delete it, it says it will delete it after the next reboot.

Hey redchango,

Disable Microsoft Antispyware and SpySubtract (this is important)nas it cans top the fix working

Do not reboot until I tell you also try not to reboot until your next post and I reply to it (this is becuase the Malware will keep coming back and returning as something new)

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;

Scroll down and find the service called:

Remote Procedure Call

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then Ok and close any open windows.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix

You may want to print the rest of these instructions.

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u gggb.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

Repeat with these Dll's:

regsvr32 /u sdkfx32.dll

Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

svsid.exe
atlig.exe

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

ggggb.dll
sdkfx32.dll
atlig.exe

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\system32\ggggb.dll/sp.html#34321
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\system32\ggggb.dll/sp.html#34321

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\system32\ggggb.dll/sp.html#34321
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\system32\ggggb.dll/sp.html#34321
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7619AA46-A728-CD1C-351B-804009677E62} - C:\WINNT\sdkfx32.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [atljq.exe] C:\WINNT\atljq.exe

O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\sysjd.exe" /s (file missing)

Before I start the next run ...

Unread postby redchango » April 12th, 2005, 4:52 pm

Before I do this, is it necessary to keep downloading the same things again? I've downloaded about:buster, the .reg file, cwsshredder, and adaware. But, you asked me to download them again, is it necessary? Just curious.

Sincerely and with much gratitude,

Andy

You log does look a little cleaner, but we may still have bad files on your system. About Buster is one of the main cleaning tools for this.

Reference List : 19

That tells me it was not updated - please run that program in normal mode with internet access, choose updates - the latest version when I last looked was 25 for 26.

Do not let it scan in that mode, go back into safe mode - run it again with a full clean this time then post back for Bertha with a new HJT log and the About Buster log.

Here's new hijakthis log and about:buster. There does still appear to be some activity. My Microsoft Anti-spyware keeps catching stuff, and when I go to Add/Remove Programs, it shows Search Extender (with the AIM logo (not sure if this is an AIM program) and Shopping Wizard.

Hey redchango,

Please do not reboot your computer until told too (as this wil only cause problems to persist)

Also please do not go surfing aroudn the Internet until we have you clena, as we will be goign aroudn in circles forever

Only re boot when I ask and try not to reboot any other time including when I am waiting for replies from you

Follow these instructions to the tee

Ok lets try again

As you have already donloaded the programs earlier you wont need to download them again unless you have removed them

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;

Network Service Security
.

Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present

nettl.exe

Now find and delete these files, if you can't find one then don't worry.. just move on to the next one.

xcdps.dll
iebf32.dll
nettl.exe

Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-glx-2
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINNT\xcdps.dll/sp.html#34321
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {DB36B410-3085-E5A3-6ECD-B55C6E123738} - C:\WINNT\iebf32.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nettl.exe] C:\WINNT\nettl.exe

O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\system32\atllb.exe

hello again

Unread postby redchango » April 19th, 2005, 1:27 am

Here is the logs. I couldn't follow your instructions to the tee because of a problem I encountered in safe mode. I couldn't get into the folder I had that contained hijack this. so i had to reboot and download it again, but onto my desktop, which ofcourse i went back into safe mode afterward and then rebooted again. Also, when I tried to scan with AdAware in safe mode, the program froze up. I tried it again after rebooting and it worked fine.

My suggestion is so that you can follow all of this, to copy all the text to a wordpad file on your computer.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Please download About:Buster from here: UPDATE IT

http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/AboutBuster.zip.

Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster.
You must run this program and get the latest ref file (currently 25/6) - BUT do not run the fix in the program.
We will use that program later in this process.

Next download CWShredder, install.
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cw ... nload.html

If you already have CWShredder, please delete it and download the latest version.
We will use that program later in this process.

Ok.

Now reboot to safe mode (F8 at boot time).

Run Hijackthis and with all windows closed put a check mark next to the following

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-glx-2
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-glx-2
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://s-redirect.com/?a=2&b=n-glx-2

O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\javawv.exe (file missing)

Click "FIX"

Reboot into Safe Mode (F8 on Startup)

Use the search otion on the start menu (bottom left hand corner of the screen) to search for and find the following files and folders:

Files

C:\WINNT\javawv.exe

If found delete the offending file (they may not be there this is fine)

Reverse the above to hide your files and folders

Then run cwshredder, hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Let it delete all it finds.

Navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on aboutbuster.exe When the tool is open press the OK button, then the Start button, then the OK button, and then finally the Yes button. It will start scanning your computer for files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so. (It does take a long time to run)

Reboot to normal mode.

Now do a new Hijackthis log and post that with the about:buster log for me to see.

Hey redchango,

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
