HijackThis Log - Lots of popups, Aze Bar, more?

Unread postby NinaB » January 26th, 2006, 5:07 pm

My daughter downloaded a game from a free games web site. Along with it came a whole bunch of Adware and viruses. The main symptom is that every few minutes or so, a whole bunch of popups suddenly appear spontaneously. Some of the popups are obviously in Internet Explorer (which opens by itself). Others look just like pictures with transparent backgrounds. Some of the popups are quite inappropriate for a 12-year-old girl, and others threaten to download things and its very difficult to close their windows before they do. My daughter uninstalled the game, but the popups remained. (She later installed the same grame from another site that her friend told her was safe. The popups were still there even before she did this).

I have run the following programs trying to get rid of this:
AdAware
Spybot
Trojan Hunter
MS Anti-spyware
Norton Antivirus
Bitdefender
Ccleaner (gets rid of temporary files, cookies, etc.)
Kill2Me (gets rid of Look2Me, which one of the programs found but couldn't remove)

These programs found and removed lots of adware and trojans, but still the popups keep coming.
There are two suspicious programs that I see installed when I look in Add/Remove programs. One is Uinstall Aze Bar, the other is called Appswebservice.com Search Assistant. The first I know is adware. The second I don't know what it is. When I try to uninstall these programs, nothing happens.

It has come to the point that I need help.

The computer is a Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack One.

Thank you so much in advance for your help. If you need any more info from me, please let me know.

Here is the HijackThis log. (I am surprised to see the Kerio personal Firewall still there. That's something that I tried to install yesterday. When I restarted the computer after installing, I got a bad error that said that Windows was closing to avoid damage to the computer. So I restarted in Safe Mode and uninstalled the Kerio firewall [I thought]. I also uninstalled Firefox, which I installed just before Kerio. When I restarted again I did not get the error). Sorry so much explanation - I don't know what will be important.

NinaB,
Welcome to the MWR forum.
I'll be happy to give you a hand with your log.
It has quite a few infections, as you suspected.
Be back shortly.

You may want to print this out, or save it as a Notepad document on your Desktop, since you won't have Internet access in Safe Mode.
------------------------------------------------------------
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del once to bring up the End Task dialogue. Highlight "WINSERVS" and select End Task. (It may take a few moments for a "not responding" warning to appear. Press End Task again.) Do the same for any occurrence of "WINSERVN", if it exists.
Clickspring provides the following uninstaller to remove PurityScan: http://www.purityscan.com/ps_uninstaller.exe
Run the Uninstaller per instructions. Answer any questions carefully.
------------------------------------------------------------
Please download the free Ad-aware and install it from here : http://lavasoft.element5.com/support/download/. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, please configure it as indicated below. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware, please uninstall your current version and install the newest version SE 1.06. Run Ad-Aware, and click Check for updates now.
Select Configurations (click the Gear wheel at the top) as follows:
  • General Button > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
  • Tweak Button > Cleaning Engine > UNCHECK Always try to unload modules before deletion.
Click Proceed.
To start the scan, Click > Scan Now at left
  • Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Select "Search for low-risk threats"
  • Select "Perform full system scan"
  • Click Next
When the scan has completed, select Next.
  • In the Scanning Results window, select the Critical Objects tab.
  • Right-click on the screen and choose Select all objects
  • Click Next to remove the infections found, and click OK to the prompt.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Exit Ad-Aware
Click Here http://lavasoft.element5.com/software/addons/vx2cleaner.shtml to download the VX2 Cleaner Add-on.
Open AdAware again.
Click Add-Ons
Double-click VX2 Cleaner
Click OK to run the tool.
If malware is found, click Clean System.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and RUN Spybot S&D from here. Don't install the TeaTimer 'runtime' option until your machine is completely clean, as it may interfere with fixes.
Install Spybot, click Search for Updates. Then download and install the updates.
Next click the button Check for Problems.
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, bold Black entries, and GREEN entries in the window.
Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
REBOOT to complete the Spybot cleaning process.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please download, install, and update the free trial version of Ewido trojan scanner: from here : http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
There is an unofficial set of instructions in pdf format here : http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/ewidoQuickGuide.pdf
* Install ewido security suite
* When installing, under "Additional Options", Uncheck "Install background guard" and Uncheck "Install scan via context menu".
* Launch ewido, there should now be an icon on your desktop. Double-click it.
* The program will go to its main screen
* On the left hand side of the main screen click Update.
* Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can also use the same download link http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ to manually update ewido.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list.
In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have Nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!.
It's extremely important not to open any windows while the scan is in progress.
Now Run Ewido
* Click on scanner
* Click on Settings
* Under "How to scan" all boxes should be selected
* Under "Possibly unwanted software" all boxes should be selected
* Under "What to scan" select scan every file
* Click OK
* Click on Complete system scan
* Let the program scan the machine
* If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification.
* Let it fix whatever it finds
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report.
* Click Save report
* Save the report to your desktop
* Exit ewido
When you compose your reply, paste the contents of the report into it..
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply., along with the contents of the Ewido report.

"Possible New Variant of VX2"

Unread postby NinaB » January 27th, 2006, 9:56 am

askey127 -

Thanks! I never expected such a quick response.

I am still going through the steps you recommended, but I wanted to let you know about something. When I ran the VX2 Cleaner Add-on to Ad-Aware SE, it told me "Possible new variant found. Please submit the file contained in C:\vx2logs.txt for analysis."

Here is what was in vx2logs.txt:

Posssible new VX2 variant file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jtnm0751e.dll

What should I do about this? Who should I submit it to for analysis? Lavasoft?

Also, should I delete jtnm0751e.dll ?

Thanks again,

Nina

NinaB

Answer is yes to both questions.
Send it to Lavasoft, then delete. They have instructions how to send, I believe. If you somehow cannot get instructions on how to send it to them, I will give instructions on how to send it here.

Unable to submit or delete file

Unread postby NinaB » January 27th, 2006, 1:35 pm

Arrgh! I've been unable to submit the dll file to lavasoft. When I went in to look at it this morning, it was gone. I ran the VX2 cleaner tool again, and found it again under a different name. I tried to submit that to lavasoft using the submissions page on their site. The page would not accept the upload because it said the file had zero size. However, my computer showed it as 229 kb. I also tried to Email it as an attachment to Lavasoft. Again I got a message that the file was of zero length so the message could not be sent. I tried to copy the file to a floppy, and to delete it, but both of these things failed, because the file was in use by another process. Since I don't know what that process is called, I can't close it.

My question now is: should I continue with the other steps you sent me, even though I am not able to delete the possible VX2 variant file?

I also want to let you know that when I brought up the End Task dialogue as you described, I did not see the process WINSERVS running, so I continued to the next steps of uninstalling purity scan and running Ad Aware and VX2 cleaner. That's as far as I've gotten so far.

OK.
Proceed with the rest of the steps.
We will deal with that nasty file later.
Please be sure to save the Ewido report.
Thanks

askey127:

I forgot to mention - a lot of stuff got removed, but the popups are still with us, though maybe not quite as many.

NinaB,
As you may know, you have the latest version of the Look2Me infection.
Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.
Copy the contents of that log and paste it here as a reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

If you receive, while running option #1, an error similar to:
"C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
The system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. Choose close to terminate the application.."

...then please Use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition.

Please Do NOT run the fix portion (option 2) until we review the Notepad log.
As soon as I see the notepad file contents, we can probably run the Fix portion, but we need to check the file list first.

NinaB,
Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!
If after the reboot the desktop icons don't disappear or the log does not pop up, then double click the second.bat file in the l2mfix folder to continue with the fix.

NinaB,

Nice Work.
Now to clean up the remaining junk downloaded by L2M.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [services32] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\mc-110-12-0000234.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uuqr] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\uuqr\uuqrm.exe

If you or an administrator did not intentionally restrict your access to the net, check these two also:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

L2M is like a magnet, attracting junk downloaders like these. Put a check mark on them:

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Stop Processes Prior to Deletion
Close ALL open windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete together to bring up the task manager.
Under the processes tab, if it is visible, check the box 'Show processes from all users'.
One at a time, highlight each of these that are listed and "End Process":
uuqrm.exe
mc-110-12-0000234.exe

-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion.
In Windows Explorer, navigate to these files. Delete them if they exist :
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\uuqr\ <== this is likely C:\Program Files\Common Files\uuqr\ Please Delete the entire folder.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\enlol1331.dll <== this one is supposed to be gone, so finding it is unlikely
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Windows\mc-110-12-0000234.exe
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any file you find and cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

If things continue to look good, we will do a final cleanup, final check, and add some security provisions.
