Smitfraud - Big Problem

Unread postby knoxville » January 12th, 2006, 1:58 pm

Hi, Spybot is showing up with being infected by smitfraud.c
It cannot delete it as it's being used in the memory. I have had my homepage hijacked to http://www.yoursystemupdate.com but now thats stopped. I had all the warnings in the system tray but thats stopped.. The only thing is, is that it keeps popping up in Spybot.
Here is my hijackthis log and I hope someone can advise me on what to do.
Thanks :)

Hi knoxville, :)

Welcome to MRU. :D

I can't see any evidence of smitfraud. Where does the Spybot report Smitfraud.c. Can you copy the file path and paste it in your next reply, please? However, you have a problem with your trusted zone.

Download deldomains:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

When you click on the link, select Save. Save it to your desktop. Once on the desktop: It appears as an icon that looks like a notebook tablet with a gear overlaid on it.
When you right-click on the deldomains.inf file, a menu should appear. The second item on that menu should be install.

To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

Because this will remove all entries in both the Trusted Zone and the Restricted Zone, any program, tool, or settings that were previously used to set restrictions will need to be reset. For instance, if it's being used, IE-SPYADS will have to be reinstalled, and if Spybot's "Immunize" feature is used, you will need to reimmunize, if you're using SpywareBlaster open it and select to "Enable all protection" again.

Next, Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

So, I'll be waiting for a new HijackThis log and the result of Kaspersky online scan.

Avast, Kapersky that needs updating

You should never have two resident antiviruses running at the same time. Avast is good. Stay with it. The Kaspersky you are running now is only an online scanner, will not interfere with Avast. When you have more than one antivirus running at the same time, they conflict with each other rendering the computer vulnerable. It may even cause crashes.

No, my neighbour installed it when he reinstalled windows...It wont let me update it as the licence has run out :( What do I do about it?

Also, on my desktop, I accidently put the Show Desktop icon, from the quick launch tab onto the desktop, and everytime I try to delete from the desktop it says it will delete the command for good. Everytime I try and put it back in the quick launch tab it only creates a shortcut. How do I get rid of it?

Thanks :)

Can't you just drag and drop it where it was before?

Nope, when I try and drag it back to the Quick launch tab, it just creates a shortcut and remains on the desktop :(

Do you have two icons for it: one on the desktop and one in the quick launch pad?
