Brower Hijack / Infection?

Unread postby CRMik » February 15th, 2015, 1:50 pm

Hello,

this morning my browser seemed to be hijacked. A fake message from the police appeared and I couldn't close the browser down. I looked this up on another computer and it looks like possibly the Ukash infection. I was able restart and boot in Safe Mode and tried a system restore but had a message saying restore failed. I restarted and ran Malwarebytes which I use anyway and Hitman Pro but neither came up with anything. I have Avast free version and that returned nothing. I don't appear to be having any more problems or at least here is no obvious sign of any problems. I am surprised as looking online this virus seems to cause quite a lot of trouble. I would be grateful if someone could take a look and see if the problem has gone or not.

Many thanks

Re: Brower Hijack / Infection?

Unread postby nunped » February 15th, 2015, 3:46 pm

Hello CRMik, and welcome to the forum.

My name is nunped and I'll be helping you with any malware problems.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Here are some guidelines for the cleaning process to run as easy as possible.

  1. Please read this topic: ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
  2. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only! Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  3. You must have Administrator rights permissions for this computer.
  4. DO NOT run any other fix or removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  5. DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process. This adds more items to be researched.
  6. Only post your problem at one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  7. Only reply to this thread. Do not start another thread.
  8. The absence of symptoms does not imply the absence of malware. Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean".
  9. No Reply Within 3 Days will result in your topic being closed!

Read through these instructions with your full attention.
Please ask first if you have any doubts.

I am currently reviewing your logs and will return, as soon as possible, with additional instructions.

Hello CRMik,

Please run these two aditional scans:

Step 1 - Scan with FRST
Please download FRST ... by Farbar, from the link below and save it to your Desktop.
For 64 bit Systems
  • Right-click FRST.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button. ... When finished a log will be created, FRST.txt.
  • Please post the content of the FRST.txt in your next reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it will create another log... Addition.txt.
  • Please post the content of the Addition.txt in your next reply.

Step 2 - AdwCleaner - Scan Only
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode, save it to your desktop.
  • Close ALL open programs, including your Internet browsers.
  • Right click on adwcleaner.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run it.
  • Click on Scan.
When the scan finishes, you'll see a message on the product window: "Pending. Please uncheck elements you don't want to remove."
  • Press the Report button to produce the scan report.
  • A logfile C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt will automatically open. ([Rn] n = number of run)
  • Please post the content of the C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt logfile in your next reply.

Hi,

thanks for getting back so quickly, I really appreciate it.

Logs. I hope the Adwcleaner log is OK. There is no 'report' option so I clicked on 'Logfile', perhaps software has changed ?

Hi CRMik,

Not much malicious items showing in your logs. Just a few things to deal with:

Step 1 - Fix with FRST
  • Click Start
  • Type notepad.exe in the search programs and files box and click Enter.
  • A blank Notepad page should open.
    • Copy and Paste the following script into Notepad, Do not include the words Code: select all
    • (Click the select all button next to code to select the entire script).
    Code: Select all
    HKU\S-1-5-21-4261524462-2767468360-34493648-1000\...\MountPoints2: {d4f704e0-4ba9-11e4-8ddf-78e7d1d4afbc} - F:\Startme.exe
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer: Policy restriction <======= ATTENTION
SearchScopes: HKLM -> DefaultScope value is missing.
    SearchScopes: HKLM -> {0633EE93-D776-472f-A0FF-E1416B8B2E3A} URL =
SearchScopes: HKLM-x32 -> DefaultScope value is missing.
    BHO-x32: No Name -> {9030D464-4C02-4ABF-8ECC-5164760863C6} -> No File
    CHR HKLM-x32\...\Chrome\Extension: [oejkcgajlodefenbbjdnaiahmbnnoole] - C:\Program Files (x86)\Lavasoft\AdAware SecureSearch Toolbar\chrome-newtab-search.crx [Not Found]
    EmptyTemp:

  • Save it to your Desktop as filename fixlist.txt.
  • Right-click FRST.exe and select " Run as administrator " to run it.
  • Press the Fix button just once. Then wait.
  • When finished, it will create a Fixlog.txt log on your Desktop.
  • Please post the content of the Fixlog.txt in your next reply.

Step 2 - AdwCleaner - Scan/Clean
You should still have AdwCleaner on your desktop.
  • Close ALL open programs, including your Internet browsers.
  • Right click on adwcleaner.exe and select "Run as administrator" to run it.
  • Click on Scan. When the scan finishes...the Clean button will become active.
  • Click on Clean.
  • Select OK at each prompt... to reboot the computer.
  • A logfile C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt will open after you log back on the computer. ([Sn] n = number of run)
  • Please post the content of the C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt logfile in your next reply.

Step 3 - ESET online scannner
Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • First please Disable any Antivirus you have active, as shown in This topic.
  • Note: Don't forget to re-enable it after the scan.
  • Next hold down Control then click on the following link to open a new window to ESET online scannner
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Click on Run ESET Online Scanner, then elect the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use, then click Start.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on Start.
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on Finish.
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Hi,

I have include logs for FRST and ADWCleaner. I had trouble with ESET. The software must have changed recently as some of the steps in your instructions are slightly different and menus have changed. Also when the scan had finished I didn't see this option, "When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish", also there was no sign of a logfile or option to create/save one unless I missed it but i found a log in prog folder, hope it is right one.
