new W32.Sinnaka.A@mm ....Can anybody advise...?

Unread postby Tomato » January 7th, 2006, 10:51 am

Hi,

Our computer seems to have picked up a virus or worm(?) called W32.Sinnaka.A@mm sending me to the URL http://www.updatesystempage.com/ and also put something called "Spywarestrike" on our desktop. It's also constantly putting up fake windows notices "System Intrusion Detected" I guess to try and get me to download dodgy malware removers. I'm worried it can get at our email / passwords and do nasty things....so I've tried following the advice in response to previous threads using Smitrem, Edwido and HiJackThis in 'safe' mode, but I still get the same problem returning. Any ideas what I should do? :?

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

***

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

***

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

***

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

***

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

***

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

***

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

***

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

***

Note: XP users using the XP theme may experience a change to the Classic Windows theme. This can be changed on the themes tab of desktop properties.

***

Reboot back into Windows' Normal mode and post it along a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Hi,

I have followed your instructions as exactly as I can and the spyware seems to have been removed, as I've now got our homepage back. However, there is still an inactive "SpywareStrike 2.5" icon on the taskbar which I have hidden - does this mean the virus is elimated?

Also I notice this still present in my HiJackThis report:-

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {27150f81-0877-42e9-af13-55e5a3439a26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp6B7B.tmp (file missing)

If this pertains to a file deleted by one of the malware scanners, should I now delete this entry and any others that might pertain to the virus?

Many thanks for your help and advice on this - it is much appretiated! I attach scan reports as follows:-

Hello we will check for malicious files on your computer.

Please run an online scan at Panda Active scan *Requires Internet Explorer.
Make sure you click the "Free Online Virus Scan" in the upper right hand corner of the page under the Free use Activescan header. We do NOT want the default spyXposer scan.
  1. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click On 'Scan Now'
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB (asinst.cab)
  4. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
    * You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
  5. If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
  6. Then click Save report
  7. Post the contents of the report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

Because the tool smitrem has been updated, i would advise you to throw away the version you have now and follow this fix.

***

Please update Ewido
Do NOT run a scan yet.

***

Reboot back into Windows' Normal mode

Perform a full scan with panda again and save the report and post it here along a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

Double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

Select "Delete on Reboot".
Place the following line (complete path) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox:

C:\WINDOWS\Country.exe

Put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot"
Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

After the reboot see if the following folder is present and delete it.

C:\Program Files\SpywareStrike

Post a fresh hijackthis log and tell me how your computer is runing now
