Hi Andya729,

Great. :D Your log is clean. :D The entries in the Kaspersky are in the System Restore. They won't harm you there and we'll be taking care of them now.

msxd.exe was actually in ZoneAlarm under Program Control>Programs and was listed as being an allowed program, so I've disabled it so it has X's all the way across, I'm just worried as to how it got there after we deleted it.


You may have given the permission before we deleted the file. It's not showing in your log now. What's the name of the program that was using that file?

There is just one orphaned entry that needs to be fixed with the HijackThis and you are all set to go.

Run HijackThis. Put a checkmark against the following:


O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all other windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked". Exit HijackThis.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure.

Remember to reset your realtime scanners, by reversing the processes for turning them off.

Remember to hide your system files again.

Start>My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View
Under the Hidden files and Folders heading uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes] to confirm.
check the Hide file extensions for known file types.
Click OK.

Disable and Enable System Restore

When you have removed malware, and now clean which you seem to be, it's recommended to remove old restorepoints and let Windows make a new, clean one. Because Windows regularly sets restorepoints, it's very possible that the malware, you have removed, is still present in the System Restore. If you put Windows back to such a restorepoint, this malware will be put back, as well. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.

4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

Reboot normally.

And that's all. But to help protect you against further infections, and also to help prevent criminals using your computer to infect other people's computers on the web, I recommend the following: (You may already have some of the items)

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Keep your antivirus-program up-to-date and do regular scans with it. Please make sure that you have only one active antivirus program on your system.
If you haven't got an antivirus, you can download and install one of the following free ones:

AntiVir here
AVG Free here
Avast here

It is essential to keep the anti-virus program fully updated. New virus infections are being produced all the time, and unless the program downloads the latest 'definitions', it cannot protect you against the newer versions. If you want to check for updates manually I'd recommended doing so at least once a week. However, a better option is to set the program to download and install updates automatically every time you are connected to the Internet. The first time you use it, please set it to perform a full system scan.
IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site <http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/> to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site <http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/maincatalog.aspx?lc=en-us> and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Keep your pestware-scanners up-to-date and do regular scans with them.

To keep your computer free of Spyware, Adware, Hijackers etc., download and install the following free pestware-scanners (if you haven't installed them allready):

Install realtime pestware-scanners and keep them up-to-date.

The following free realtime pestscanners prevent a number of malware-variants from entering your computer, in the first place:

If you haven't got one, already, install a firewall and keep it up-to-date. Please make sure that you have only one active firewall on your system.

A firewall will prevent unauthorized contact between your computer and internet.
If there is no firewall installed on your computer, you can download and install one of the following free firewalls:

Important: (Windows XP only) If you install a firewall, be sure to turn off the WinXP-firewall!

Install these programs, to make surfing with Internet Explorer safer:

A popup-blocker, f.e. Google Toolbar here: A popup-blocker prevents popup-windows from opening, when you come along a websites that uses them, during internet-surfing.

IE-SPYAD here: This utility adds a long list of known bad sites to Internet Explorer's Restricted Sites zone. This prevents those sites from executing their malicious programs on your computer.

Thank you again for all your help. I've done all the resetting and made sure that I have the programs running you mentioned (I had loaded most of them over the course of the last week!).

However, the home page keeps changine back to a microsoft site and all connections seem to be lost (any site I try to access comes up with the IE error message I posted earlier). This seems to be happening overnight, if I'm remembering past incidences correctly. I've tried resetting settings and deleting cookies and temporary files, but the only thing that seems to help is restarting the computer (obviously not an ideal solution).

I'm not sure if this is the firewall (don't think so) or still some type of malware, but would appreciate any thoughts you have.

I'm going out of town for the week and don't look forward to leaving my wife without her computer for the week (even restarting the computer is a challenge for her!).

• Open Hoster.exe
• Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"
• Close program when complete.
• Empty Recycle Bin
Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log

Warning: if you use a customized hosts file to block certain sites then this will overwrite all those entries as well and you will need to re enter them

Please run the Kaspersky again. Post the Kaspersky report and the new HijackThis log, please.

I went through your logs from Panda, Kaspersky and the HijackThis again. There is nothing to indicate any malware. However, if you are still getting hijacked (if your homepage keeps getting changed) we should look to see if there is anything hidden.

" Hit I accept. It will take you to download page.
" Download blbeta.exe and save it to the Desktop.
" Once saved... double click blbeta.exe to install the program.
" Click accept agreement and Click scan
This app too may fire off a warning from antivirus. Let the driver load.
Wait for it to finish.
" If it displays any items...don't do anything with them yet. Just hit exit (close)
" It will drop a log on Desktop that starts with fsbl....big number (where .......... represents numbers).
The application finds both bad files and legitimate ones, so don't choose the rename option yet! Copy and paste the log it generated in your next reply.

Hi again! Sorry for delay - I've just gotten back into town. It's still having trouble finding any websites such that I need to restart the computer to get back on the web.

I ran Blacklight Beta and it didn't find anything, so it didn't create a log to post.

Hi Andya729 :) ,

Welcome back...

It's still having trouble finding any websites such that I need to restart the computer to get back on the web.

My understanding of this is that your home page is not changed, your browser is not hijacked. You have a problem with opening up new web pages.
There is absolutely nothing in your log that would cause that.

Something weird is going on with Google and AOL Search (which I'm trying to uninstall since I don't want it anyway).

I am still seeing a fully active AOL in your log. It may be interfering with your web browsing. Let's remove AOL, which actually was your intention anyway.
Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove AOL, if you haven't done it already.

Make sure that you can see hidden files
· Click Start
· Open My Computer
· Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
· Select the View Tab
· Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
· Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
· Click Yes to confirm
· Click OK
Remember to hide them again after the fix is completed.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Scan with HijackThis. Close all other windows/applications except HijackThis and put a checkmark against the following:

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer in Normal Mode.

Go to Internet explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Connections>LAN Settings and make sure "Automatically detect settings" box is checked.

Run HijackThis again and post a new log please.

Thank you so much for following up on this. I had not replied because I'm working through getting my wife off AOL. I had de-installed it at one point during the 'cleanup' process, but she insisted I put it back on, so that's why you see it showing up again in the logs. I'd like to get rid of it (and the monthly fees!) but too many people have her aol address.

Anyway, this looks like a great resource, so when I get home tonight I will check into it and see if it helps. I'll definitely let you know.

I'm at my wit's end. The problem with not being able to access websites has started occurring more and more frequently, and the only way I've found of resolving it is to restart the computer, which then only gives me a limited amount of time with it working again. I've checked all settings wtihin Internet Options and with my firewall and can't figure out what could be driving this.

I know it doesn't really fall into the realm of malware anymore but I'm hoping you can point me in the direction of a resource to help figure this out. My next option is to re-install windows and start over from scratch.

I am really sorry that you are still having problems. :( It's my personal opinion that there is a conflict between AOL and the Broadband. I have never used AOL, therefore I cannot say that for sure though.
Since it's been a while it may be a good idea to post a new HijackThis log to see if anything crept up in there lately. Make sure that nothing is disabled at the startup before the scan. You might also like to talk to AOL support and find out if they can shed any light on it. I found this info, I don't know it it can be of any help.

When do you actually experience the problem: when you are using AOL or when you are on Broadband? Does it happen with only certain web pages? Is there a pattern about the time, applications running at the time.

You can always test if AOL is the culprit by uninstalling AOL completely(you have the instructions for that) and see how the computer is running. If you are still having problems, then you can be sure that it's not AOL related. If it's running OK, then it's your choice to re-install it or not.

It may also be a simple power problem. A colleague of mine also told me of a case where a client of his whose modem and router kept resetting themselves even though there was no noticable power problem with the PC. A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) was the resolution. I am quoting him here:

By testing a UPS plugged into two wall outlets we were able to prove that those devices we getting dropped constantly as evidenced by the regularity of the UPS backup cut-in click and beep. Set up a new dedicated wall outlet, as a result, and kept the UPS as well.

Normally, you want to get a minimum 500VA rated unit (very happy with APC) to catch all those millisecond glitches and to keep those affected devices from resetting or corrupting themselves.

Thanks again for your help. I'll certainly try anything prior to trying to take on re-installing Windows (done it once, don't want to do it again).

I'm at work so can't run HJT, but will do that as soon as I get home. It seemed to me at first that the pattern was that it was losing connectivity overnight, but it now seems to be all the time. My wife doesn't use the internet for much other than aol, so the only program that are usually running (besides ZoneAlarm and those types in the background) are aol and IE.

I'll uninstall AOL and see if that helps for sure.

The power and router don't seem to be the issue, because my daughter's computer and my work laptop that I use to access wirelessly aren't experiencing the same problems.

Hi Andya729,

When you run HijackThis tonight, make sure that you have nothing disabled at the startup. First disconnect from the internet. If there is something bad there I don't want it to be activated.

Go to Start>Run and type "Msconfig" and click OK. In the new window, go to the Startup tab. If you have items which are not checked there, make a list of them. Then click on "Enable All", and click OK.

Open HijackThis and go into the Config option when you start HijackThis, and then click on the Misc Tools button. You will then click on the button labeled "Generate StartupList Log". Once you click that button, the program will automatically open up a notepad filled with the Startup items from your computer. Copy and paste the list and save it to post here please. Then press on "back" button to go to the main page of HijackThis.

Once you are on the main page, click on "Scan" button and when completed save the log.

Next, go back to "Startup" tab and uncheck/disable the items that you've enabled. This is where the list you made earlier will come handy.

Now, you can connect to internet again.

Post the HijackThis log and the startup list created by HijackThis.
