Help Please - Infected Banner and Random Websites Popping Up

Unread postby andya729 » January 2nd, 2006, 1:59 am

I've started getting a banner ad at the top of my screen stating that my "computer is infected, click here" (this comes and goes periodically) and every several websites I visit, I get a new IE window for a different ad.

I've run the recommended spyware programs, ad blockers, and ZA firewall, and found several things, but it still seems to be there.

Here is my HT log. Thank you in advance for any help you can give:

Hi Andy729, :D

Welcome to MRU. :D I'll be happy to help you. I have not done a complete research yet, but the initial indications are that you have an about blank infection. With this infection, the infected files change everytime you restart your computer. So, if you have restarted your computer since you posted the HijackThis log, please post a new HijackThis log, and do not reboot/restart your computer until I instruct you to do so. Let me know as soon as you can, and we'll start working.

RE: Help Please - Infected Banner and Random Websites Poppin

Unread postby andya729 » January 2nd, 2006, 3:06 pm

I actually shut the computer down right after I ran HJT. I tried to append to my post but couldn't. I started getting something taking over my computer, pulling up the command prompt and pinging an external site. It's really got me worried, so I've just shut down my computer and am working from my work laptop. So the HJT log should still be current. I'm worried about starting up the computer, running HJT, then leaving it on, though I suppose I could do it and not connect to the internet?

Any help is VERY MUCH appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi andya729,

I am sorry :( you are having a hard time with your computer. However, you'll have to start your computer to work on the fix that I would be suggesting. The minute you start, the files will be changed. So, my recommendation would be that you start your computer, but disconnect from the internet, get the HJT log. and stay offline until the computer is fixed. I'll be asking for some programs to be downloaded, but you could download them on a CD on your laptop and install them onto your computer while it's still offline.

Alright - here's the current logfile. When I installed the firewall last night, it's started telling me which programs are trying to access the internet (though I don't think it's notifying me when the service is trying to ping through the command prompt). Two programs I don't know what they are are msxd.exe and 'guard' (which could be one of the spyware programs I loaded last night).

Don't know if this info is helpful but just trying to be as helpful as I can so we can resolve this as quickly as possible.

Thank you again for your help - very much appreciated!

Hi Andya729 :) ,

Thanks for being patient. :D My research of your log confirms that you have the about blank infection. :( It's best if we can get this off the first time. So, please follow the instructions very carefully, without missing any. First of all I need you to download some programs for use later. Once the programs downloaded, you'll have to disconnect from the internet and unplug your modem. Plesase read through the instructions very carefully and if you have any questions, post them here before you start. Let's roll:

Download HSfix.zip and unzip it to your desktop. Do not use it yet.

Download About:Buster by RubberDucky. Once it is downloaded extract it to c:\aboutbuster and check for updates. Do NOT use it yet

Download CWShredder, install it, check for updates but again, don't use it yet.

Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware

During the installation, uncheck the following under Additional Options:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Check for updates but do not run it yet.

Note: I see that you already have Ewido. If you have the free trial version, the trial period is for 14 days. It may have already expired. In which case it's best that you uninstall it and make sure that it's installed as advised above: If you have the paid version, then you'll just need to update it and we'll need to turn its realtime scanner Ewido guard off before we start working. The instructions for turning it off are given below:

================================================
Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem for the duration of this fix. Please make sure that you have printed the rest of these instructions.

=======================

We'll need to disable the realtime protection programs so that they will not interfere with the fixes:

1. Open Ewido by double-clicking the yellow 'E' icon in the system tray.
2. In the 'Your security status' section, toggle the Ewido Guard realtime protection 'off' by clicking 'active' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
3. When you reboot, Ewido will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the guard?".
4. Reply 'no' and set it to 'inactive' for the duration of your cleanup.

MS AntiSpyware (MSAS) Beta
1. Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware icon in the system tray [it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye].
2. Click on "Security Agents Status".
3. Click on "Disable real-time protection".

You may need to either disable or give permission to any other realtime scanners you may have such as AOL and ZoneAlarm.

================================================

Ensure hidden files and folders are set to show;

 • Click Start.
 • Open My Computer.
 • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
 • Select the View Tab.
 • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
 • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
 • Click Yes to confirm.
 • Click OK.

=======================

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping F8 while booting up and continue for the rest of the fix in SAFE MODE

======================

While in safe mode, double click on the HSfix.reg file you downloaded at the beginning. Grant it permission to add the registry items.

======================

Still in Safe Mode, open CWshredder that you downloaded in the first step. Close all browser windows and click on the fix/next button.

======================

Still in Safe Mode
, Bring up task manager Ctrl-Alt-Del and end these processes if they are present :

C:\DOCUME and SETTINGS\Owner\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\3C.tmp.exe

C:\DOCUME and SETTINGS\Owner\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\3D.tmp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\msxd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\syscr32.exe

======================

Still in Safe Mode, Now run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning put a check against the following. Make sure that all other windows other than HijackThis are closed and click 'fix checked'

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

O23 - Service: Network Security Service (NSS) ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\syscr32.exe

Exit HJThis but stay on Safe Mode.

====================

Clean temp files:

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Still in Safe Mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box.
The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

====================

Still in Safe Mode, Run about buster:

Now press Windows key and E key at the same time to bring up Windows Explorer and navigate to the c:\aboutbuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe. Click Begin Removal to allow AboutBuster to scan. When it has finished, AboutBuster will open a 'Scan Completed' window. Click OK. Another information window will open. Click on Exit. AboutBuster will inform you that a log has been created. Click OK. I will need you to post that log later.

==========================================================

Still in Safe Mode, Run Ewido.

Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says 'Perform action with all infections' then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report - click it.
Save the report.txt file to your desktop.

Now close Ewido.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!

===============================================

Still in Safe Mode, go to Start>Search>All Files and Folders and scrolldown using the scroll bar on the right. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders

Type in and search for the following files in bold and delete them one at a time, if found, :

C:\WINDOWS\msxd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\syscr32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sdkfb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\msxd.exe
C:\WINDOWS\udttb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\addsn.dll

Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the following folder in bold and delete everything inside that folder, if found:

C:\DOCUME and SETTINGS\Owner\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp
===============================================

Now reboot in Normal Mode.

===============================================

We need to see if we need to restore some deleted files:
Please check for the following files using the Windows Search Engine:

control.exe
rundll32.exe
wmplayer.exe
msconfig.exe
notepad.exe
shell.dll
SDHelper.dll

If any are missing or not working properly then you can download new copies from Merijn's Files and follow the instructions at that site to install them where they belong for your OS.

============================================================
Reconnect to the internet. Please download

" Hoster
" Unzip Hoster.zip
" Open Hoster.exe
" Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"
" Close program when complete.
" Empty Recycle Bin
" Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread, after completing any other instructions given
Warning: if you use a customized hosts file to block certain sites then this will overwrite all those entries as well and you will need to re enter them

=============================================================

Finally, run Panda's ActiveScan and perform a full system scan.
" Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button.
" A new window will open...click the big Check Now button.
" Enter your Country.
" Enter your State/Province.
" Enter your e-mail address.
" Select either Home User or Company.
" Click the big Scan Now button.
" Allow the ActiveX component to install and download the files required for the scan. This may take a couple of minutes.
" Click on Local Disks to start the scan.
Upon scan completion, if anything malicious is detected, click See Report, then click Save Report and save it to your Desktop.

================================================================

Now reboot and run hijackthis again and post a fresh log along with the about buster log, the Ewido log and the Panda report :)

Wow! Thanks for the help - I'll start on this now. One question I have is I just want to confirm that this should fix the issue with the program that is bringing up the command prompt and pinging the outside site. I'm not sure what it is, but it's really freaking me out that something is doing this with my computer. I need to clear off about:blank anyway, so I'll start on that immediately, but hopin you can answer that question.

Thanks again,

Andy

Two programs I don't know what they are are msxd.exe and 'guard' (which could be one of the spyware programs I loaded last night).

I guess you are referring to these two. Msxd.exe is included in the fix. The "guard" may have something to do with one of the realtime scanners. I suggest you go ahead with the fix now and we'll see what we are left with ;)

I'm still working on this but have come across an issue. Each time I run about Buster it successfully completes the scan, but when I click finish it brings up an error that I am missing COMCTL32.OCX. When I look in the readme file, it gives an address to download it, but when I go there I can't find the file.

How critical is the log from this program if it tells me the scan was successful? When I look for this file at microsoft.com it doesn't even look like it applies to XP and it tells me I need to check to make sure I have a bunch of files of certain versions before downloading it.

Still proceeding with the other scans, etc.

Thanks again,

Andy

Hoster Log File

Unread postby andya729 » January 3rd, 2006, 1:04 am

It seems from the instructions that when I reboot after running Hoster that it should re-launch and prompt me to do something, but I get nothing. When I try to copy/paste to the clipboard, this is what I get, which is just the stock file.

Any thoughts?
