small.ca virus alert on Windows7

Unread postby iremg » October 31st, 2012, 2:14 pm

Windows7 Action Center says that I have Win32/Small.CA virus, which should be removed. I scanned my system for viruses (using Sophos) and also used Microsoft's proposed solution which was to download their Safety Scanner and ran a scan. Neither of the programs found any virus. What should I do? Thanks.

Hi iremg,

Welcome to the forum.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Please note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please do not run any scans or make any changes to the system unless I ask you too.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the program file and selecting: Run as Administrator.
Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program.
When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Please run a new scan with DDS and post both the log files, DDS.txt and Attach.txt

Please let me know what the following software is used for.

ForeScout SecureConnector
Cisco VPN Client

Please let me know if the computer is ever connected to an educational network or used for business in any way.

Thank you very much for your help. I am currently backing up the files and will get back to you once this is completed. In the past ForeScout Secure Connector was used in university accommodation before connecting to the university network, but I do not use this program at all anymore and can uninstall/remove it.
I still use the VPN client sometimes to connect to the university network, but not always. Would this be an obstacle for you to help me with malware removal? Is there anything I could do if this is the case? Many thanks.

Hi iremg,

Would this be an obstacle for you to help me with malware removal? Is there anything I could do if this is the case?

As the computer is connected to an Eduational network I would recommend that you contact the Administrators of that network (or Helpdesk) to inform them that you suspect that you have a virus on the computer.

Connected to Educational Network
I see you are posting for help for a computer connected to an "Educational" Network.

May I draw your attention to ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST topic, which you should have read before posting for help.

The section here, explains why we do not offer help for such computers.
