I got hit with a virus/trojan while surfing through a random website. I get repeated pop-ups from the system tray telling me "You computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection. It is recommended to use specal antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download the most up-to-date antispyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware." It seems to have installed something called "WinHound Spyware Removal tools"

I have run AdAware with the most current update, an it found and deleted some 245 or so objects.

I also ran Norton Anti-Virus, which found and deleted several infections but was unable to fix or delete 4 others, and it gave me the following info:

Item Name: Virus Name:
wininet.dll Trojan.Alemod
bre.dll Download.Trojan
mscom32.dll Backdoor.Trojan
msvcrl.dll W32Looksky.A@mm

First of all, you will need to print out this post and/or save a copy as a text file in Notepad; that way you have a hard copy of these instructions; you can not have IE/Firefox/any browser open during the fix

Next, please enable viewing of hidden files as follows:
1) Go to My Computer, and click on the "Tools" menu
2) Click "Folder options"
3) Select the "View" tab
4) Make sure "Show hidden files and folders" is selected
5) Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
6) Make sure "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" is unchecked

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = file://C:\WINDOWS\blank.mht
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
