hello, all looks great!! thank you so much for this!!! brilliant. i would recommend this site to anyone - but you probably would rather i didn't in case it generates too much work?!
but could you recommend me an antivirus package to use from now on? i used to have the pay-for version of kaspersky but didn't renew because someone told me that free stuff was just as good. but i always knew kaspersky was working, as it would whirr away and suggest things i might want to block. it might be my settings but the panda cloud has never shown even the first signs of life.
sorry to show my ignorance of these things!

One thing you must do now the computer is clean is update to Service Pack 3 for XP. Without it the computer is vulnerable no matter what AV you have installed.

Download the standalone installer from Here. Save it to your desktop & once downloaded double click the file & follow the prompts.

Then get back to me when you have completed it successfully - let me know if you have any problems.

Please read this topic.

Hi

Well done.

Update Adobe Reader

Your Adobe Reader is out of date.
Older versions may have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

  • Using the internal updater ensure the software is updated to the current increment 10.1.3
    • Open Adobe Reader go to > Help > Check for updates and allow the updater to check.
    • Click to download and install any necessary updates.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Oracle's Java (Was Sun Java) is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Oracle Java is:
Java Runtime Environment Version 7 Update 5.

  • Go to Oracle Java
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Platform, Standard Edition. Java SE 7 Update 5"
  • Click the Download JRE button to the right.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement
  • In the list of files, Look to Windows x86 Offline & click on the link to the right which says "jre-7u5-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java Auto Updater
    Java(TM) 6 Update 22
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Security Check

Please download and save SecurityCheck.exe to your Desktop from one of the links below.

Link 1
Link 2

  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside the black box.
  • When finished, a Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
  • Please post the contents of that document in your next reply.

Your computer now appears to be free of malware, but may benefit from a little basic maintenance.

Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start -> Run, then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
(Do not include code:)
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
  • A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
  • A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Hi,

Give me an update on how the computer is running when you have completed these instructions.

Hard-Drive Maintenance:

  • Click Start and type CMD in the start search box. When CMD is found, right click it and choose "Run as Administrator"
  • At the Command Prompt type the following:
  • CD C:\ and hit the Enter/Return key.
  • Now type in CHKDSK C: /R and hit the Enter/Return key (Note the space between C: and /R).
  • When prompted with:
CHKDSK cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked next time the system restarts (Y/N)
  • Hit the Y key then at the Command Prompt C:\ >
  • Type in EXIT and and hit the Enter/Return key.
  • Now Reboot (Restart) your computer.

Note: Upon Reboot (Restart) the CHKDSK (check-disk) will start and carry out any repairs required.

Note: Do not touch either the keyboard or Mouse, otherwise the Check-Disk will be canceled and you computer will continue to boot-up as normal.

Note: When CHKDSK has completed its scans, the machine will proceed to load and Boot to Windows.

    When windows has loaded:

  • Click Start and type CMD in the start search box. When CMD is found, right click it and choose "Run as Administrator"
  • At the Command Prompt type the following:
  • CD C:\ and hit the Enter/Return key (Note the space between CD and C:\).
  • Now type in DEFRAG C: (Note the spaces between DEFRAG and C:)
  • An Analysis report will be displayed and then Windows will start the Defragmention run automatically.
  • This may take some time, when completed the Command Prompt C:\ > will appear.
  • On completion, close the command prompt.

Hi hanberuk

I'm very sorry, my bad - Those are Vista/Win7 instructions I've posted.

These are correct. ;)

Hard-Drive Maintenance:

  • Click Start > Run... & type CMD
  • Click OK. A black command box will open.
