Computer Powers Down

Unread postby jja1313 » June 5th, 2012, 2:45 am

My computer has been crashing intermittently for no discernible reason. The issue seems to be worse with Facebook games, but can happen at any time. I have tried to run the DDS program five times, but each time my system shuts down after 3-4 minutes. I will keep trying and will respond if I get something.

Thanks,
Jeff

Not sure if this is a software problem or hardware problem, related to the power supply. The computer is relatively old.

Re: Computer Powers Down

Hi jja1313,
This can be caused by a number of things, including malware, but malware is among the least likely.
If it turns out to be a hardware problem, we can move this thread to one of our System "Rooms"
We will continue to help if you need us.

Some notes:
Your CPU has an automatic shutoff if the temperature gets too high.

Possible sources of shut downs:
  • Dirt in the air intake or exhaust vents
  • A fan which has failed
  • Hardware failure of the graphics card or system
  • Hardware failure of the hard drive
  • Hardware failure of the motherboard/RAM, etc.
  • Hardware failure of the power supply
-------------------------------------------------------------
Check airflows
I would do the following:
Take the (side) cover off the box. Unplug the machine and vacuum out all the air vents, including the power supply fan opening.
Vacuum all the loose dust from the motherboard without dislodging anything.

Plug in and start up the machine with the cover off
Notice whether all the fans are running. There is usually a small fan on the motherboard over the CPU as well.
If it runs without shutting down when the cover is off, something is overheating.
If you have a dead fan, remove it and bring it with you to the PC repair shop or electronics store so you can get an exact replacement.
If it's a defective CPU fan you may want to have a repair shop do it.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Make Sure any Cards plugged into the motherboard are seated properly
-------------------------------------------------------------
To test the motherboard and RAM
Go here : http://www.memtest86.com/download.html
Download the first file on the page (it's a zip).
When you unzip it you get a small file named Memtest86_4.0.iso
It's called an image file.
CD burning tools like Nero, Roxio or Ashampoo can burn a CD from that image file and a blank CD-R.
You can also use the free ImgBurn to make the CD. http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
If you have the CD set as the first boot device, the resulting CD will boot your machine and immediately run a memory test.

If it reports any error within an hour or so, you need a RAM card replaced.
Memtest has no graceful shutoff. If you hit the Esc key, you can remove the Boot test disk and Restart.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

Let me know what you find.

The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is HP_PAVILION.

The computer was dusty. It has been cleaned. The fan runs continuously and is very loud.I will keep the side panel off and monitor the situation. Thanks.

jja1313,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hard Disk Repair
IF Chkdsk has found any errors having to do with bad sectors in your file system, or if it reports that it cannot continue in Read-Only Mode, it needs to run a different sequence on reboot to do repairs. It can't repair the file system while Windows is running.
DO NOT START THIS SEQUENCE UNLESS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE MACHINE FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. It may not take very long , but could, depending on the number of files and folders.
It will not relinquish control until it is done. You cannot stop it, and it would be a BIG mistake to pull the plug.

If it's present on your Desktop, please delete your original file Checkhd.txt
Go To Start, Run and type cmd
hit <Enter>
Type this black text into the command window at the prompt:
chkdsk c: /F /R <==notice the /F and /R , with one space between c: and /F, another between /F and /R
hit <Enter>
You will get a message that the volume is locked, with a request to do the repair on Reboot.
Answer Y
Then type exit to close the Command window.
Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
It will scan again when it boots up and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.

Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:

cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"

A file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
If it's very long just post the last 30-50 lines.

Due to Lack of Response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
