POSSIBLE ROOT KIT INFECTION

Unread postby frerom » May 18th, 2012, 5:33 pm

I recently had a root kit removed from my laptop. I was advised to have my desktop checked.

The DDS would not complete the scan it stopped after about 70% I guess and the computer froze. I had to do a power shut down.

I also want to replace IE 7 with IE8. Should I wait to do this till after the computer is checked.

The hikack logs follow:

Hi and welcome back to Malware Removal Forum, sorry for the delay in answering your request for help.
My name is Cypher, and I will be helping you with your malware problems.
This may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
If you no longer require help i would be grateful if you would let me know.

Before we start please note the following important guidelines.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  • Only post your problem at One help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  • Only reply to this thread do not start another, Please continue responding until I give you the "All Clean"
Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • Please DO NOT install any other software (or hardware) during the cleaning process.
  • Print each set of instructions... if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  • Note: No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!

Note: If you haven't done so already, please read this topic ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST where the conditions for receiving help here are explained.
Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start

I also want to replace IE 7 with IE8. Should I wait to do this till after the computer is checked.

If you haven't done so already, please don't install IE8 until we have check out your computer.

  • Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT, then double-click ERUNT from the menu.
  • Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  • In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  • Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  • Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.

Next.

Please download TDSSKiller.exe and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on TDSSKiller.exe to launch it.
  • Click on Start Scan, the scan will run.
  • When the scan has finished, if it finds anything please click on the drop down arrow next to Cure and select Skip
  • Now click on Report to open the log file created by TDSSKiller in your root directory C:\
  • To find the log go to Start > Computer > C:
  • Post the contents of that log in your next reply please.
  • DO NOT TRY TO FIX ANYTHING AT THIS POINT

Next.

Please download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Standard Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these 2 Notepad files in your next reply.

Logs/Information to Post in your Next Reply

  • TDSSKiller log.
  • OTL.txt and Extra.txt contents.

No problems running the scan. I disabled Online Armor and Avast from the tray icons but I didn't use the recommended procedures in "THIS TOPIC". Maybe they require updating?

It appears that I have an infected file.

Hi Cypher,

That was some operation. I was amazed at the big cleanup.
I had some trouble at first not knowing whether I should close any of the anti virus programs.
I ended up Closing Malwarebytes, Running OTL wth Avast in Normal mode not Sandbox and Online Artmor running.
Although I didn't time the OTL fix, it must have taken at least 1/2 hour.
I believe Java 7 ran an update while I was trying to run or during thr fix.
Computer appears to be running very well. I have a noisy hard drive and it appears top be very quiet now compared to what it used to be. I always wondered whether there were some applications working that shouldn't be working.

OTL Fix log follows:

Hi Cypher,
I don't know what happened but when I returned to the computer and tried the internet, IE doesn't connect anymore.
It ends up giving program not responding error message.
I'm not sure but I believe the Windows Live menu bar got installed somehow. I'll wait until your next post before I do anything.

Regards

JUST A QUICK UPDATE.
I played around with the IE menu bar settings andI decided to turn off and restart the computer.
IE is working with the normal menu settings now. Windows Live toolbar is an option.

Hi frerom,
Looks like you're good to go, your latest set of logs appear to be clean!
This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Clean up with OTL

  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program. This will remove most of the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

You can now delete any tools/logs we used if they remain on your Desktop.

Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer
You can do that HERE

Read some information HERE On how to prevent Malware

I would be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Safe surfing!

Hi cypher,

Thanks a lot for the help and advice in cleaning my computer.

I've just finished updating my computer and have a Secunia score of 98%. My Win DVD 5 is end of life. I will remove it shortly.

I did have one more question re replacing IE7 with IE8.
When I try to remove IE7 starting with the updates, I get a warning that this may affect other programs.
Should I ignore the warnings or should I install IE8 on top of IE7.
I haven't found any web sites that clarify this.
I noticed on my other computer that both IE7 and IE8 are listed in the ADD/REmove programs in Control Panel.

I'd appreciate any advice you can give me or direct me to a forum that addresses this issue.

You may consider this thread closed re the malware removal.

Have a great summer

There is no need to uninstall IE7, installing IE8 will just replace it.
You can download and install it from the link below, let me know if you have any problems.

Hi Cypher,
I am having trouble with IE8.
After downloading IE8 and open the folder with "OPEN SAFER" the files are extracted to a folder I can't find. Although I am logged in as an administrator I get a message to use administrator privilige to install program.
I tried opening from the RUN cmd and I get the message that this is not an update for the IE I have installed.
I believe there may be a step I'm missing.

When you clicked the download link did you chose the Run option or save file?

Hi Cypher,
I don't believe I had the option to select run or save. Microsoft Download Manager now downloads the files in a self extracting cabinet to My Downloads folder. Then I can only open yhem with Open Safer. But then I can not find the files after they are extracted.
I'll try it again.
