Er... Mate, You know these "possibly" known malware files. I think we may have forgotten one called babylon (Babylon) 'cause I've found alot of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE files representing Babylon. :(

Also, how bad/dangerous are these malware files?

Hi :)
Scan with System Look
  • Right Click onSystemLook.exe And Select Run as Administrator to run it.
  • Copy and paste the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *Babylon*

    :folderfind
    *Babylon*

    :Regfind
    *Babylon*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
Because of the Registry searches, the scan may take 15 minutes or a bit more to run on a large machine. Please be patient.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Hi, Can you tell me how you found those babylon entries? It wasn't present in the logs I requested..

Step 1.
Add/Remove Programs
I need you to uninstall babylon from your computer. If Present
  1. Click Start...then click Run.
  2. In the open text entry box...please copy/paste the following:
    appwiz.cpl
  3. Click the OK...button. It takes a few seconds for the program list to be "populated'.
  4. Locate the following program(s):
    Babylon toolbar
  5. Press the "Remove" or "Change/Remove"...button to uninstall the program.
    Carefully read any prompts...
Some uninstallers prompt in a way to trick you into keeping the program, sometimes, preventing them from being uninstalled again!
Don't worry if you can not find all programs...some may not have an uninstall feature.
  6. Repeat steps 4 - 5 for each program in the list.
  7. When finished...close/exit Add/Remove Programs.

Step 2.
OTL - System Scan

Important! Close all applications and windows so that you have nothing open and are at your Desktop
  1. Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. When the window appears, make sure Include 64bit Scans is CHECKED.
  3. Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  4. Check/tick the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  5. Copy the following text... do not include the code box title "Code'

    Code: Select all
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0ECDF796-C2DC-4d79-A620-CCE0C0A66CC9}]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{2EECD738-5844-4a99-B4B6-146BF802613B}]

    C:\ProgramData\Babylon
    C:\Users\All Users\Babylon

    C:\Program Files (x86)\BabylonToolbar

    :Commands
    [EMPTYTEMP]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]

  6. Click under the Custom Scan/Fixes box and paste the copied text.
  7. Click the Run Fix button. If prompted... click OK.
  8. When the scan completes, Notepad will open with the scan results ( mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). The report is saved in C:\_OTL\MovedFiles.

After we'd pretty much finished the Searchnu malware and I was under the assumption we had, since you'd also gone on to help someone else with their problem. I decided I'd uninstall my other web browsers, when I went on to FireFox I found the Babylon toolbar, and the same sort of google-eqse setup as the Searchnu did. I haven't even used FireFox for a long, long time!

So I uninstalled both the FireFox and the Babylon toolbar. I also was a bit naughty and checked the name out on SystemLook.exe and found the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE files.

Sorry if I've upset you mate, I really don't mean to be a pain. :(

Hi dude,

Everything is good. I haven't had any re-direction issues, no more Searchnu homepage. I even have my popular site page come back which is a relief.

Thank you so much for taking your time to help me remove the malware, I really appreciate your assistance. It's people like you that are the unsung heroes and you guys deserve much more respect for doing the things you do.

If that is the malware removal complete and done, once again I thank you so much for helping me, as it's also been an interesting 2 weeks lol.

Just a few questions however before you lock this thread up;

1) Can I now remove all the malware removal tools and files etc, or do I need to keep them?
2) Can you give me any information at all on what the Searchnu malware actually does? I assume it's nothing major serious as I have seen other threads requesting victims to delete everything and contact banks, companies etc to remove/change their back accounts/setting etc.
3) Everyone seems to hate Norton Internet Security for some reason, could you reccomend a better security service?

1) Can I now remove all the malware removal tools and files etc, or do I need to keep them?

The clean up steps that I am going to provide is going to remove everything we have used

2) Can you give me any information at all on what the Searchnu malware actually does? I assume it's nothing major serious as I have seen other threads requesting victims to delete everything and contact banks, companies etc to remove/change their back accounts/setting etc.
Searchnu.com is new google search redirection virus that will hijack your search engine and re-direct to malicious websites. It is not as serious as having a backdoor trojan horse when a reformat/reinstall is recommended

3) Everyone seems to hate Norton Internet Security for some reason, could you recommend a better security service?

I will recommend these and they are free..

Note: You should run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and results in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Congratulations... your computer now appears to be malware free! :)

Step 1.
OTL-Cleanup
You should still have this on your desktop, if so, please ignore the download instructions.
Please download OTL ... by Old Timer . Save it to your Desktop.
  1. Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
Vista-W7 users: Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  2. Press the CleanUp button.
  3. When done, you will be prompted to reboot your system to finish file removal... please select OK to reboot your computer.
If you did not reboot your computer normally, please do so now, before continuing.

Step 2.
Create a System Restore Point - W7
  1. Go to Start > Control Panel... click the System icon in the Control Panel.
  2. In the left pane click on System Protection.
  3. When the Dialog comes up, click on the System protection tab.
  4. Check that the drive letter where Windows is located (usually C:) indicates System protection ON.
(This indicates System restore is turned ON for the Windows drive).
  5. Click the Create button to create a new restore point. In the Name dialog, type a descriptive name... then click Create.
  6. You will get a message that the Restore Point was created successfully. Click Close.
  7. Click OK and close the System window in the Control Panel.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Please follow these simple guidelines in order to help keep your computer more secure:

Update your Antivirus programs and other programs regularly.
Secunia Personal Software Inspector
FileHippo.com Update Checker
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often.
Keep on top of critical updates , as well as other updates for your computer.
Using Windows Update in Windows 7
What is Windows Update?
Microsoft Update Home

Install additional (free) programs, that can help improve security.
Many feel that having a "layered" protection scheme is beneficial, you'll have to decide what works best for your situation.
Here are a few you can look into, if you want. :)

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
You have this installed already, run scans weekly (at least)... make sure you check for updates before running scans.
Download it from Malwarebytes © Malwarebytes Corporation.
Tutorials are available for installing and running, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
Powerful, easy to use and free. For real-time protection you will have to purchase the product.

WinPatrol
Download it from Copyright © BillP Studios
Information about how WinPatrol works, is available Here
(The free version of WinPatrol... provides limited real-time protection)

Read, stay informed.
To help minimize the chances of becoming re-infected, please read.

If your computer is running slowly after your clean up, please read.
What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Please let me know that you completed the cleanup steps, the create/purge System Restore point steps and reviewed the rest of the post.
Once I receive your reply, unless there are other malware questions or concerns, I will have this topic closed as resolved.

Stay Safe! ;)

Hello mate,

Thanks for the answers, helps me sleep better at night knowing that Searchnu wasn't too dangerous.

OTL Cleanup was a success, rebooted after finishing.
Restore was a success, rebooted after finishing.

I'll skip on the Avast! Internet Security. It's the reason why I had to purchase this laptop. As my previous one was "protected" by Avast! But it pretty much did nothing to stop every Wyrm/Trojan in existance tearing my computer apart! To the point Where TheTechGuys pretty much told me to scrap the thing and buy a new one, lol. - But again, thanks for the suggestion.

I've downloaded the SCars manager, Garry G proposed on the Computer Security short guide, to help me keep track on out of date files etc, so it should help me keep my computer upto spec. I've also turned on the Smartscreen Filter that I.E 9 has, didn't even know it existed so I'm also happy with that, and I wouldn't have known about it if you hadn't quoted that thread, so again, thanks.

I think we can say it's all done and dusted now, I'm not having any problems now with Searchnu and it's all down to you mate, thank you so much for your time, effort, and professionalism. I hope you all the best on your eventual Graduation Alander.

Take care mate. :D
